Kortopi is an antagonist from the manga and anime series Hunter x Hunter created by Yoshihiro Togashi. He is member #12 of the Phantom Troupe (also known as the "Spiders"), an infamous and ruthless gang of thieves with Class-A bounties. Characterized by his exceptionally short stature and a thick, messy mane of greyish-blue hair that obscures his entire face except for one wide open eye, Kortopi serves primarily as the group's logistics and counterfeiting specialist rather than a direct frontline combatant.

Appearance
Kortopi, member #12 of the Phantom Troupe, is a character defined by an exceptionally mysterious and distinct appearance. His most defining visual trait is his thick, messy mane of blue-grey hair that completely covers his head and obscures his entire face, leaving only his bulbous left eye visible.
He is exceptionally short, ranking as the shortest and physically weakest member of the Troupe. He has a round head, a small mouth, and large round eyes that are never seen closed (though one is constantly hidden by his hair). He wears a simple, oversized light blue tunic with light blue pants underneath, paired with black shoes.
In the 1999 anime adaptation, his clothing was altered slightly to feature a white dress-like tunic. He wore long, brown, feminine-styled boots rather than standard black shoes. Kortopi’s full face is famously never revealed during the main events of the story, except for a single panel when his severed head is held in Shalnark’s hands after Kortopi is killed by Hisoka. However, author Yoshihiro Togashi sketched his full, unmasked face for the first time in the character trivia section of the Hunter x Hunter Volume 34 manga extras.
Like all members of the Phantom Troupe, Kortopi has a 12-legged spider tattoo featuring his member number, 12, on the spider's abdomen. However, the exact location of the tattoo on his body has never been revealed in the series.

Personality
Kortopi is characterized as a highly reserved, quiet, and intensely loyal supportive member of the Phantom Troupe. While he is one of the most enigmatic and least developed characters in the group, his behavior during the Yorknew City and Greed Island arcs reveals specific core traits.
Kortopi rarely speaks unless spoken to or unless it directly relates to the execution of a mission. He prefers blending into the background, a trait visually mirrored by his massive, messy mane of hair that completely obscures his face.
Despite being the physically weakest member of the Troupe, he shows absolutely no hesitation in utilizing his incredible Conjuration Nen ability, Gallery Fake, to assist the group. He creates massive decoy hideouts, replicates heist auction treasures, and generates fake corpses without ever questioning his commands.
Kortopi places absolute trust in his leader, Chrollo Lucilfer. His devotion is highlighted when he willingly lends his unique Nen ability to Chrollo to help him prepare for his deadly deathmatch against Hisoka. Like his fellow Spiders, Kortopi is a cold-blooded criminal who shows a total lack of empathy toward the group's victims. He approaches tasks with a highly clinical, strategic, and functional mindset.
Despite the ruthless nature of the Phantom Troupe, Kortopi gets along well with his teammates. He is often seen accompanied by or working smoothly alongside other members like Shalnark, and the group highly values his specialized utility over raw physical combat power.

Background
Kortopi was member #12 of the Phantom Troupe in Hunter x Hunter, a character defined by a deeply mysterious background and a sudden, brutal death. Unlike the frontline combatants of the Spiders, like Phinks and Nobunaga, his primary function was utility and espionage through his powerful Conjuration ability, Gallery Fake.
Very little is officially known about Kortopi's personal history, as he is one of the least explored members of the Phantom Troupe. Like most members of the Troupe, he originated from Meteor City, a discarded landfill city whose citizens do not officially exist in any government database. While several members are explicitly shown as founding members from Chrollo’s childhood, like Pakunoda, Machi, and Feitan, Kortopi is widely considered a later addition to the roster, brought in primarily for his extraordinary copying abilities.
During the Yorknew City auction heist, his ability to seamlessly forge buildings, treasure, and even flawless fake corpses of the Troupe members solidified his role as the ultimate criminal facilitator. He also participated in the historical massacre of the Kurta Clan, where he later duplicated their severed Scarlet Eyes to trade on the black market.
Kortopi was brutally murdered and decapitated by Hisoka Morow in Chapter 357 during the Succession Contest arc. Prior to his death, Chrollo Lucilfer fought Hisoka in a deathmatch at Heaven's Arena. To secure a flawless victory, Chrollo borrowed multiple Nen abilities from his fellow Troupe members, including Kortopi's Gallery Fake and Shalnark's Black Voice. Because Chrollo's book was still holding onto these abilities, Kortopi was completely defenceless and unable to use his Hatsu when the battle concluded.
Hisoka managed to survive the deathmatch by ordering his Bungee Gum to restart his heart and lungs after suffocating, invoking post-mortem Nen to bring him back to life. Following his resurrection, Hisoka abandoned his desire for fair fights and declared a war of extermination against all remaining Spiders. Kortopi was caught entirely off-guard while using a public park restroom. Because he lacked physical combat abilities without his Nen, Hisoka effortlessly ambushed and decapitated him inside the stall.
Moments after the murder, Shalnark was waiting outside the park when Hisoka emerged from the bathroom carrying Kortopi's severed head. Hisoka tossed the head to a horrified Shalnark before blitzing and killing him too. In a chilling final panel, Shalnark's body was left tied to a playground swing with Kortopi's severed head sitting on the ground at his feet, both being picked at by crows.
Fans frequently point out the dark karma of this imagery: Kortopi, who once forged and distributed the plucked eyes of the slaughtered Kurta Clan, had his own eyes eaten by scavengers in his final moments.

Powers and Abilities
In Hunter x Hunter, Kortopi has no distinct non-Nen superhuman abilities or special combat techniques showcased in the manga or the anime. In a group composed of elite combatants, his role is purely focused on support, theft, and espionage.
Physical and Combat Abilities
Enhanced Strength: While Kortopi is explicitly ranked as the physically weakest member of the Phantom Troupe in arm-wrestling, he is still a baseline superhuman. His physical strength comfortably exceeds that of average humans and unrefined Nen users, which allowed him to keep pace with the active physical demands of the Yorknew City missions.
Advanced Speed and Agility: Kortopi possesses enough raw speed to keep up with the rest of the Spiders when traveling across rooftops or pursuing targets (such as Kurapika). He can smoothly sprint up vertical surfaces and jump horizontally between buildings without exhausting his aura.
Preternatural Perception and Vigilance: According to Kurapika, Kortopi shares a natural, highly tuned survival instinct with the rest of the Spiders. He can detect hostile intent or vigilance from an enemy before a direct strike lands, even if the attacker is meters away.
Stealth and Infiltration: Born in Meteor City, Kortopi has no official public records, fingerprints, or database profile anywhere in the world. This lack of identity makes him exceptionally difficult to track by conventional legal authorities or blacklist hunters.

Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Kortopi's Nen affinity is Conjuration, and he is considered an absolute master within his category. As a member of the Phantom Troupe, his role centers heavily around support, reconnaissance, and theft rather than direct physical combat.
Gallery Fake (Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand): His primary Nen ability allows him to materialize an exact physical duplicate of any inanimate object he touches. By touching an object with his left hand, Kortopi instantly conjures a flawless replica with his right hand. The ability is not restricted by size. Kortopi can duplicate anything from small items like a coin or a vase, up to complex structures like massive, multi-story buildings. However, he cannot replicate life. If he attempts to copy a living human being, the result is an inanimate, realistic replica that essentially functions as a corpse. He notably used this trick to fake the deaths of the Phantom Troupe members during the Yorknew City arc. While he can copy items created via other people's Nen, his replicas cannot replicate or mimic the magical or supernatural properties of the original objects, and every single duplicate created by Gallery Fake automatically vanishes precisely 24 hours after its creation.
Spatial Tracking and En Properties: Beyond simple duplication, Gallery Fake doubles as an incredibly powerful tracking and scouting tool. By holding or touching the original item, Kortopi can instantly sense the precise location and movements of its conjured copy, regardless of the distance between them. Additionally, when he creates duplicates of buildings, the entire replicated structure effectively serves as a massive field of En. He automatically and instantly senses the position and movement of anyone who steps inside his conjured buildings.

Goals and Reputation
Kortopi does not possess individualistic or grandiose villainous ambitions; rather, his desires are inextricably tied to his collective identity as a Spider. Like most Troupe members, his primary baseline motivation is serving his leader and the group’s collective survival.
Coming from the lawless, discarded wasteland of Meteor City, his criminal operations serve to safeguard and support his homeland. Following the Yorknew City arc, he shares the collective goal of hunting down the "Chain Bastard" (Kurapika) to avenge Uvogin's death.
Within the lore, all of the Phantom Troupe members hold an infamous Class-A bounty. Individually, Kortopi's reputation is built on utility rather than raw violence. In terms of physical strength, Kortopi ranks dead last in the Troupe's arm-wrestling matches. However, he is deeply valued by Chrollo and the other Spiders. His ability allowed the group to pull off the entire Yorknew Auction heist by duplicating priceless artifacts and fabricating convincing fake corpses of the Troupe members to trick the Mafia.
Despite his lack of frontline combat prowess, his Nen capability is universally recognized as monstrous. He replicated fifty entire skyscrapers simultaneously, a feat of raw Conjuration and aura reserves that would drive normal Nen users to madness or exhaustion.
Because his utility is so immense, Chrollo explicitly borrowed Gallery Fake to defeat Hisoka in their Heavens Arena deathmatch. Stripped of his ability and caught off-guard, Kortopi was ruthlessly ambushed and decapitated by a vengeful Hisoka outside a public restroom.
The Hunter x Hunter community views Kortopi through a unique mix of humor, mechanical awe, and slight indifference. Due to his design, being short, completely covered in thick hair, and featuring a singular peering eyeball, fans affectionately refer to him as a mop. He is often viewed as the cute or least explicitly evil member simply because he is rarely seen participating in the direct, sadistic torture and murder that Feitan or Phinks enjoy.
Deep-dive Nen theorists frequently debate Kortopi's untapped potential. Fans point out that his restriction (touching an object to copy it) is incredibly lenient for the reality-warping scale of his power. Community discussions suggest that Togashi killed Kortopi off early because keeping Gallery Fake active on the Black Whale voyage would have broken the plot or solved too many logistical problems for the Spiders.
His death is a major talking point in the fandom. Fans generally feel bad for him because they feel he was done dirty, killed off-screen without getting a single traditional anime battle, all while trying to use the bathroom.
