Appearance
Pakunoda is depicted as a tall, slender, and curvaceous woman with distinct, sharp facial features. Standing at an impressive 182 cm (approx. 6'0"), she has one of the most recognizable and unconventional designs among the female characters in the series.
Her most prominent trademark is her aquiline (hooked) nose. She has long, narrow eyes and a long jawline, giving her face a highly pointed appearance. Pakunoda sports a short, straight blonde bob cut that cleanly frames her face and reaches down to her neck. In the manga, Yoshihiro Togashi depicts Pakunoda’s eyes as lavender or blue, while in the 1999 anime her eyes are lavender, and in the 2011 anime her eyes are brown.
For the majority of her appearances in the Yorknew City arc, she carries an unreadable, apathetic, and melancholic expression, and she wears a deep purple, form-fitting pant suit. The jacket is worn completely open at the chest, plunging drastically down to her waist and exposing a significant amount of cleavage. She pairs her sharp suit with casual, flat pink shoes.
As member #9 of the Spiders, her spider tattoo presumably bears the number 9 on its abdomen, though its exact location on her body is never explicitly revealed in the manga or anime. During the Meteor City flashbacks, a younger Pakunoda is shown with an entirely different demeanor. Her hair was cut even shorter, and she possessed a much warmer, kinder, and happier facial expression before the tragedies of her hometown shaped the Phantom Troupe.

Personality
Pakunoda is defined by her absolute, unwavering loyalty to Chrollo Lucilfer and the Phantom Troupe, balancing a cold, intimidating exterior with profound internal emotional depth. While she operates as a ruthless criminal toward outsiders, her internal world is grounded in a deep sense of family and maternal care for her comrades.
Her loyalty to Chrollo goes beyond simple obedience to a boss. She possesses deep, foundational feelings for him, tracking back to their shared childhood in Meteor City. When forced to choose between the survival of the "Spider" (the Troupe's rule that the group is more important than any individual) and Chrollo's life, she chose Chrollo. She willfully bypassed Kurapika's Judgement Chain to share her memories, knowingly choosing death to protect her friends and preserve the leader.
Pakunoda naturally exudes a quiet, self-assured aura that easily intimidates enemies and captives alike. Within the chaotic and often violent dynamic of the Phantom Troupe, she is rarely animated, loud, or confrontational. She acts as a stabilizing, nurturing presence, often described by fans as the "mother figure" or emotional anchor of the group.
Even without relying on her Specialist Nen ability (Psychometry), she is incredibly skilled at reading human behavior and non-verbal cues to spot lies instantly. Chrollo noted that even as a child, she could read people like an open book. Her psychometric abilities require her to deeply understand people's "purest memories". This makes her uniquely empathetic, for instance, seeing Gon and Killua’s intense loyalty to Kurapika profoundly moved her, influencing her final decision to trust them.

Background
Pakunoda grew up in Meteor City, a junkyard wasteland entirely ignored by the rest of the world. Long before becoming ruthless thieves, Pakunoda, Chrollo, Franklin, Nobunaga, Uvogin, Machi, Feitan, Phinks, and Shalnark formed a close-knit theater group to voice-act and bring joy to the local kids.
Their innocent childhood abruptly ended when their close friend, a young girl named Sarasa, was brutally abducted, murdered, and dismembered by outsiders. Devastated by Sarasa's horrific death, Chrollo vowed to change Meteor City so it would never be targeted again. Pakunoda and the others pledged their lifelong loyalty to him. They learned Nen and officially formed the Phantom Troupe, transforming themselves into cold-blooded criminals as a "masquerade" to protect their home and seek ultimate vengeance.
Pakunoda’s death occurs at the climax of the Yorknew City Arc on September 5th. During the conflict with Kurapika (the "Chain User"), the Troupe captures Gon and Killua, while Kurapika manages to kidnap the Troupe’s leader, Chrollo. Kurapika uses his Judgment Chain on Chrollo's heart, forbidding him from using Nen or communicating with his members. He then contacts Pakunoda and demands a hostage exchange, warning her not to reveal any details to the rest of the Troupe.
Pakunoda complies and meets Kurapika alone for the negotiation. Before letting her go to retrieve the kids, Kurapika wraps his Judgment Chain around Pakunoda’s heart as well. He sets strict conditions: She must release Gon and Killua unharmed. She must not reveal any information regarding Kurapika's identity or his abilities to the Troupe. If she violates either rule, the chain will pierce her heart and kill her instantly.
Pakunoda successfully completes the hostage exchange, saving Chrollo's life. However, Chrollo is now exiled and unable to lead them. When Pakunoda returns to the Spiders' hideout alone, she finds the group on the brink of tearing itself apart. Phinks and Feitan suspect she is being manipulated by the enemy and demand answers, while Nobunaga and Machi try to protect her. Realizing that the Troupe will dissolve into paranoia and infighting without the truth, Pakunoda makes a deliberate decision to sacrifice herself.
Pakunoda uses her secondary Nen ability, Memory Bomb. She materializes her memories into Nen bullets, loads them into a physical revolver, and aims at the six remaining founding members of the Troupe. Because they have known each other since childhood, they trust her implicitly and do not dodge the bullets. As she fires, she completely transfers her memories, her emotions, and the full truth about Kurapika’s powers directly into their minds.
Because sharing this information directly violates Kurapika's restriction, the Judgment Chain wrapped around her heart immediately tightens and crushes it. Pakunoda collapses and dies on the floor of the hideout, leaving her grief-stricken comrades with the knowledge they need to protect the future of the Spider.

Powers and Abilities
Pakunoda, the Specialist from the Phantom Troupe in Hunter x Hunter, is famous for her mind-reading and memory-sharing Nen abilities. Aside from her Hatsu, she also possesses elite non-Nen skills and physical attributes refined as an underworld assassin.
Physical and Combat Abilities
Non-Verbal Communication (NVC) Expert: Pakunoda is an elite psychological profiler. She can read body language, micro-expressions, and behavioral cues to accurately deduce if someone is lying or hiding information without having to activate her mind-reading Nen.
Expert in Tailing: She is highly proficient in stealth and tracking. She successfully shadowed Gon and Killua without them noticing her presence at all, and even fellow Troupe members (Machi and Nobunaga) failed to identify it was her tailing them.
Enhanced Physical Strength: Despite having a slender build, Pakunoda possesses superhuman strength. She ranked 11th in the Phantom Troupe's arm-wrestling standings, meaning she is naturally stronger than average humans and standard Nen users, capable of easily breaking bones with her bare hands (as she did to Squala).
Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Her physical reflexes are exceptionally sharp. This was best demonstrated when she managed to fire six Memory Bombs into six different Troupe members in the absolute fraction of a second between pulling her trigger and her heart being crushed by Kurapika's Judgment Chain.
Proficient Marksman: She has high-tier mastery over conventional firearms. Aside from using her revolver to channel Nen bullets, she is fully capable of wielding physical, non-Nen firearms (such as standard guns and machine guns) with deadly precision in conventional combat.
Keen Intellect and Analytical Mind: She is a brilliant information gatherer with sharp deductive reasoning. She is capable of quickly cross-referencing behavioral clues, environmental factors, and raw data to piece together complex situations under intense pressure.

Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Pakunoda is a natural Specialist, a rare Nen category that allows for unique abilities that do not fit into the standard five Nen disciplines. Her skillset is incredibly valued within the Phantom Troupe for intelligence gathering and interrogation, rather than direct combat. Though, she also incorporates Conjuration to manifest physical objects, like her Nen bullets.
Psychometry (Memory Reading): This is her primary Specialist ability used to extract information. By making direct physical contact with a person and asking a specific question, Pakunoda can look into their mind. It bypasses the target's conscious thoughts, retrieving the "purest memories". This makes it a perfect lie detector because the target cannot trick her by thinking of something else. Her psychometry also works on inanimate objects. By touching an item, she can view its recent history and see who handled it or what happened around it.
Memory Bomb: This ability combines Specialization and Conjuration, allowing her to share or erase the memories she has gathered. Pakunoda conjures Nen bullets loaded with specific memories and loads them into a physical, standard six-shot revolver. When she shoots someone with a memory bullet, it passes through their head without dealing physical damage. Instead, it instantly implants the memory directly into the target’s mind. She can shoot up to six people at once to share information simultaneously. If she fires a memory bullet back into the original owner of that memory, the memory is permanently erased from their mind.
Vows and Limitations: As revealed in the manga's backstory, Pakunoda set a powerful subconscious condition on her Nen: "As long as I live, I will not touch the person dearest to me." This restriction seems to refer specifically to Chrollo Lucilfer, implying she held a deeper emotional connection to him than any of the other Troupe members.

Goals and Reputation
Pakunoda does not seek personal wealth or power. Her motivations are deeply communal and rooted in her childhood. Her ultimate priority is ensuring the survival of her family. When forced to choose between the strict rules of the Spider and Chrollo’s life, she breaks the rules to save him.
Following the death of her childhood friend Sarasa in the past and Uvogin in the Yorknew City arc, her goal shifts to eliminating threats like Kurapika. Alongside the rest of the Phantom Troupe, she also serves as a primary defensive asset and protector of her lawless, discarded homeland.
To the public and characters within the story, Pakunoda represents a lethal paradox of terrifying ruthlessness and tight-knit solidarity. Because her Nen ability allows her to extract unalterable memories via touch, the Troupe views her as completely irreplaceable for intelligence and internal loyalty.
To the rest of the world, she is a mass murderer. She participated in the brutal genocide of the Kurta Clan and remorselessly tortures enemies to get what she wants. However, Pakunoda has more depth to her character than this would imply. Despite being captors, Gon and Killua earn a baseline of respect for her because they witness her genuine, agonizing grief and human love for her comrades, a sentiment Gon explicitly acknowledges.
Pakunoda is highly regarded by the Hunter x Hunter community, often cited as the definitive turning point where the series transitions from a standard shonen into a complex deconstruction of morality. Fans frequently debate her importance, often labeling her the emotional anchor or "soul" of the Spiders. Her willingness to take Kurapika's Judgment Chain to the heart just to fire her "Memory Bombs" and pass the truth to her comrades is celebrated as one of the most poignant sacrifices in anime.
The fanbase deeply appreciates how creator Yoshihiro Togashi used Pakunoda to humanize a group of ruthless thieves. Her internal conflict, choosing between the survival of the Spider as an ideology versus saving the man she loves, is viewed as highly compelling character writing. Though, in some community discussions, fans often speculate that Togashi had to kill her off early because her mind-reading abilities would have made the Troupe entirely unstoppable in later, information-heavy storylines like the Succession Contest arc.
