Who Is Feitan Portor?

Feitan Portor is a major antagonist in the anime and manga series Hunter x Hunter, created by Yoshihiro Togashi. He is member #2 and one of the original founding members of the Phantom Troupe, an infamous Class-A bounty gang of thieves that originated from Meteor City. Within the group, Feitan serves as their chief interrogator and torture specialist due to his sadistic nature.

Appearance

Feitan is recognizable by his short stature, dark, gloomy attire, and a signature skull-patterned bandana that covers the lower half of his face. Despite his small frame, he possesses a lean and highly muscular build.

He has a pale complexion, narrow, sharp grey eyes, and a perpetually cold or stoic expression. His design features black, mid-length hair that falls messily around his face, and as member #2 of the Phantom Troupe, his spider tattoo features the number 2 on its abdomen, though its exact location on his body has not yet been revealed in the series.

Feitan typically dresses in dark, baggy, long-sleeved clothes resembling a trench coat or robe. His most iconic accessory is a dark mask or bandana worn over his mouth, which features a prominent white cartoonish skull crest. He frequently carries a maroon umbrella with a skull pattern on it, which secretly conceals a thin, double-edged sword.

When activating his conjured Nen ability, Pain Packer, his clothes completely disappear and are replaced by a heavy, full-body suit of protective armor. This outfit resembles a stylized hazmat or executioner suit adorned with three inverted crosses (St. Peter's Cross) on the front.

For unknown reasons, in the original 1999 anime version, his color palette was altered significantly, giving him dark blue hair and golden-yellow eyes instead of his canonical black hair and grey eyes.

Personality

Feitan has a cold, ruthless, and highly sadistic personality, serving as the primary interrogator and torture specialist for the Phantom Troupe. Despite his quiet and detached exterior, he possesses a fiercely volatile temper that directly fuels his deadliest Nen abilities.

He takes genuine pleasure in physically breaking his victims, famously planning to rip off Gon's fingernails during an interrogation. While he usually seems emotionless, he bursts into erratic, mocking laughter when his opponents are agonizing, as seen during his battle with Zazan. His deep understanding of human anatomy allows him to maximize psychological and physical torment with clinical efficiency.

He is typically a man of very few words, speaking in short, grammatically broken sentences. When his intense rage is triggered, he stops speaking the common tongue entirely and switches to an inverted, backward dialect of unknown origin. He bottles up his irritation until it boils over, which directly triggers his Pain Packer and Rising Sun Hatsu, abilities that convert the damage he receives into a scorching, miniature sun.

Feitan is a purist regarding the rules of the Phantom Troupe. He heavily berates any members whose emotional decisions disgrace the philosophy of the "Spider". Despite his grim nature, he gets along remarkably well with his fellow founding members from Meteor City. He shares a notably playful, teasing dynamic with Phinks and Shalnark outside of active missions. His loyalty and power are respected enough that he was chosen to serve as the interim leader of the Troupe while Chrollo Lucilfer was incapacitated.

Background

For decades, Feitan’s history was shrouded in mystery. However, recent flashbacks revealed the definitive origin story of the Phantom Troupe in Meteor City. Feitan grew up as an undocumented outcast in a lawless, massive landfill city. As a kid, he was quick-tempered and often clashed with other children, including his close companion Phinks.

Despite their rough environment, Feitan and his friends lived a relatively peaceful childhood. He joined a local theater group started by Chrollo Lucilfer, helping dub an online videotape of an anime called Power Cleaners. Feitan enthusiastically voiced the "Yellow Cleaner".

The group's innocent days ended when their young friend, Sarasa, was brutally kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by outside criminals. Devastated by her death, Chrollo vowed to weaponize Meteor City and hunt down the culprits. Feitan, alongside Uvogin, Phinks, Machi, Nobunaga, Franklin, Pakunoda, and Shalnark, pledged absolute, lifelong loyalty to Chrollo. Three years later, they officially formed the Phantom Troupe, adopting a ruthless, villainous persona to terrorize the underworld and bait Sarasa's killers.

In the current manga narrative, Feitan is aboard the Black Whale No. 1, a massive transport ship heading toward the Dark Continent. He is operating with two primary objectives: assassinate Hisoka Morow (to avenge the murders of Shalnark and Kortopi) and eliminate the Heil-Ly mafia family.

The Phantom Troupe split into small cells to systematically search the ship's lower tiers. Feitan paired up with his longtime frontline partners, Phinks and Nobunaga. Because Hisoka could be hiding anywhere on the congested decks, the trio relies on mafia connections to navigate the vessel.

To gain access to the upper decks where the elites (and potentially Hisoka) reside, Feitan's sub-unit formed a temporary alliance with the Cha-R and Xi-Yu mafia families. In exchange for a route upward, the mafia requested that the Troupe wipe out the Heil-Ly family, a chaotic mafia faction led by Morena Prudo that is actively causing mass slaughter aboard Tier 3.

After investigating a series of mysterious Heil-Ly teleportation traps hidden within the ship's walls, Nobunaga was briefly trapped and separated from the group. Upon regrouping, the three Spiders successfully mapped out the operational logic of the Heil-Ly spatial abilities. Leaving Nobunaga behind to look into the ship's waste management systems, Feitan and Phinks have advanced past the tier barriers. 

They are currently using a hidden staircase route to push into the upper levels of the hull, dangerously close to the ongoing Royal Succession War and Hisoka's suspected hunting grounds.

Powers and Abilities

Feitan Portor is one of the founding members and the de facto interrogator of the Phantom Troupe in Hunter x Hunter. Despite his short stature, he is a master combatant with incredible natural reflexes and deadly Nen abilities powered by the pain he endures in battle.

Physical and Combat Abilities

• Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Speed is Feitan's defining physical attribute. He can move so fast that he leaves a trail of physical afterimages and disappears from the eyesight of trained martial artists. He can move faster than the speed of sound, notably covering his ears before a sonic attack could register.

• Immense Physical Strength: Despite his short stature (155 cm), Feitan ranks 5th in arm wrestling among all Phantom Troupe members, beating out naturally larger, highly physical fighters like Nobunaga.

• Superhuman Stamina and Endurance: Feitan can engage in high-speed, intensive combat without breaking a sweat or showing signs of fatigue, even while fighting dozens of Mafia members simultaneously or going toe-to-toe with powerful Chimera Ant Squadron Leaders.

• Advanced Agility: He possesses flawless control over his body, allowing him to attack from awkward angles, execute flips, and pivot instantaneously mid-stride.

• Master Swordsmanship: Feitan is an exceptionally deadly swordsman who relies on a swift, precise fencing style. He targets vital spots like the neck, eyes, and joints with rapid-fire thrusts.

• Concealed Sword Umbrella: His primary weapon is a thin, double-edged sword hidden inside a maroon umbrella. He uses the umbrella for misdirection, deploying it to briefly block an opponent's line of sight to setup a blindside thrust.

• Concealed Gun-Umbrella Mechanism: By pressing a button on the umbrella's hilt, Feitan can launch the metallic tip of the umbrella outward like a high-velocity projectile bullet, catching opponents off-guard.

• Master Torturer and Interrogator: Serving as the Phantom Troupe's chief interrogator, Feitan has an exhaustive, surgical knowledge of human anatomy, neural pathways, and pain thresholds. He uses this to extract information through sheer physical and psychological torment.

• Keen Tactical Intellect: He is a highly perceptive analyst in battle. He can decipher an opponent’s movement patterns, find hidden mechanical exploits in their defensive armor, and precisely time counter-attacks.

• Multilingualism: Feitan is fluent in the standard language of the Hunter x Hunter world, but when pushed into a state of extreme rage, he natively speaks a backward, inverted dialect (implied to be an altered variant of Chinese).

Nen Affinity and Abilities

Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers. 

• Nen Affinity: Feitan Portor's primary Nen affinity is Transmutation, allowing him to alter the properties of his aura. While he is a natural Transmuter, his complex combat techniques also heavily incorporate Conjuration and Emission. Feitan's specific Nen abilities are heavily condition-based and driven by his rage and the physical trauma he suffers in battle.

• Pain Packer (The Armor): This ability is activated exclusively by Feitan's rage, which is fueled directly by the physical pain and injuries he has endured from an opponent during combat. Feitan materializes a specialized, heavy protective suit of armor around his body. While only one version has been shown in the series, fellow Troupe member Phinks has stated that Pain Packer has multiple phases and forms depending on the nature and amount of damage Feitan accumulates.

• Rising Sun (The Attack): After summoning his Pain Packer armor, Feitan uses Transmutation to convert his concentrated aura into scorching, blistering heat that manifests as a miniature sun. He then uses Emission to launch it into the air. The sun incinerates everything within a massive radius. Its extreme temperature and duration are directly proportional to the damage Feitan sustained prior to activation; the more hurt he gets, the hotter and more destructive the sun becomes. The Pain Packer suit completely shields Feitan from the heat and radiation of his own attack while supplying him with oxygen. Without the armor, the technique would kill him. It is so dangerous that other Phantom Troupe members immediately flee the area whenever he prepares to use it.

Goals and Reputation

Feitan is driven by deep-seated loyalty and vengeance rather than personal ambition. He prioritizes the survival and rules of the Phantom Troupe above all else, even over individual lives, but his, and many of the Troupe’s main goal for years was avenging Sarasa by seeking retribution against the perpetrators who brutally murdered his childhood friend in Meteor City, which originally desensitized him to violence.

Feitan also seeks to protect his homeland from any existential threats, such as when he eradicated the Chimera Ant Zazan. Though, his current goal is eliminating Hisoka to avenge the deaths of his fellow Troupe members, Shalnark and Kortopi. To achieve this goal, he is actively working to wipe out the chaotic Heil-Ly Mafia family while aboard the Black Whale ship to gain access to additional tiers of the ship where Hisoka may be hiding.

Within the world of Hunter x Hunter, Feitan is regarded as an absolute nightmare and a Class-A Bounty Criminal. He is notorious worldwide as a cold-blooded thief, terrorist, and genocidal killer associated with the Kurta Clan massacre. Feitan is feared by underworld mafioso as the Troupe's primary interrogation specialist who uses sadism as a tool, but he is also respected by high-level Nen users for his extreme agility and mastery of the sword.

When Feitan gets series, he is dreaded even by his own teammates when activating his Pain Packer: Rising Sun ability, which converts his damage into an incinerating mini-sun. Despite this, Feitan is trusted enough by his peers to serve as the de facto leader of the Spiders when Chrollo Lucilfer was incapacitated.

In the real-world community, Feitan is a heavily romanticized and highly debated character. He is consistently placing near the top of official character popularity polls due to his distinct dark aesthetic. Feitan is also celebrated for his skull-adorned bandana, broken dialect, and hidden umbrella sword, while being widely memed for being surprisingly short (5'1" / 155 cm), only slightly taller than Kalluto Zoldyk, yet possessing one of the most destructive Nen abilities in the series.

Additionally, Feitan was subject to a massive, long-running fan theory claiming he is Kikyo Zoldyck's abandoned child due to his appearance, background, and assassin-like combat style. While the recent Phantom Troupe backstory may imply this is incorrect, it doesn’t provide conclusive proof, such as his actual lineage, that would confirm or prove this theory wrong.
