Who Is Isaac Netero?

Isaac Netero is a major fictional character from the manga and anime series Hunter x Hunter, created by Yoshihiro Togashi. He is the 12th Chairman of the Hunter Association and serves as the head of the Hunter Exam Selection Committee. For decades, Netero was widely regarded as the strongest Nen user in the world, possessing power and speed that bordered on godlike.

Appearance

In the Hunter x Hunter series, Isaac Netero initially appears to be a helpless, frail old man, but underneath his clothing, he possesses a surprisingly fit, muscular, and toned physique for his advanced age. His overall character design draws heavily from Buddhist art, closely resembling a traditional Buddharupa (Buddha statue). 

He has half-closed eyes, thin lips, exaggerated eyebrows that curve upward, a distinct mustache, and a thick white beard. His earlobes are highly stretched and prominent, featuring two piercings in each ear. He ties his long white hair into a hair bun or ponytail that points toward the top of his head.

For most of his introduction and his time supervising the Hunter Exam, Netero wears a traditional loose-fitting man's kimono paired with geta sandals that feature only a single ha (tooth/support block).

When preparing for his ultimate showdown against the Chimera Ant King, Meruem, Netero physically transforms his style. He trims his beard, mustache, and ponytail for a tighter, cleaner look. For actual battle, he switches into sporty athletic gear: a t-shirt featuring the Japanese Kanji character for "heart/mind",「心」(kokoro), printed on the front, paired with simple track shorts.

Personality

Isaac Netero possesses a highly complex, deceptive, and multifaceted personality that masks a fiercely competitive "battle junkie" underneath the guise of a goofy, eccentric old grandfather. On the surface, he appears to be a playful and slightly absentminded elder, but in reality, he is a deeply pragmatic, calculation-driven martial artist who thrives on absolute chaos and insurmountable challenges.

Netero often puts on an energetic, whimsical, and seemingly harmless facade. He takes great pleasure in playfully messing with others, as seen when he challenged Gon and Killua to a simple game of keep-away on his airship. He thrives in environments that lack stagnation. For example, he deliberately chose Pariston Hill, a man he knew would actively try to undermine him, as his Vice Chairman purely because it would be "more fun" and keep things interesting.

Netero dedicated his entire life to training, achieving enlightenment after committing to 10,000 daily punches of gratitude in absolute isolation. His ultimate goal in life was not to rule or protect, but to find a worthy adversary against whom he could fight at 100% of his capacity without holding back. He found this ultimate thrill in his catastrophic duel against the Chimera Ant King, Meruem.

Fellow Hunter Biscuit Krueger explicitly calls Netero a "twisted individual". He routinely tested the extreme physical limits of aspiring Hunters, regularly assigning trusted allies impossible missions with impossibly short deadlines. While he does not actively abuse the weak, he possesses very little respect for them, operating with a worldview that champions peak human evolution and capability.

Beneath his Buddhist-like prayers and pursuit of enlightenment lies a terrifying, unyielding human ego. When Meruem's existence threatened humanity's position at the top of the food chain, Netero cast aside all concept of fair martial arts play. He displayed the ultimate, cold rationality by triggering the Poor Man's Rose bomb hidden inside his own chest. His final words and terrifying smile to Meruem proved that when pushed, Netero was capable of channeling the boundless, collective malice of the human race to secure victory at any cost.

Background

In his early years, Netero was a prominent martial artist. However, in his late 40s, he realized he had reached his physical limits. Seeking a breakthrough, he retreated alone into the harsh, snow-covered mountains around 1945 to express his ultimate gratitude to martial arts. 

Every single day, he performed 10,000 punches of gratitude, accompanied by prayer. Initially, this grueling routine took him over 18 hours a day, leaving him utterly exhausted. After two years, he could complete all 10,000 punches before the sun set. By the end of his training, his movement surpassed the speed of sound, allowing him to complete the entire ritual in under an hour. This extreme devotion birthed his ultimate Nen ability: the 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva, a multi-handed construct that mimicked his hypersonic strike speed. 

Returning from the mountains, he easily defeated all challengers and eventually claimed the Chairmanship of the Hunter Association. Netero also participated in two expeditions to the untamed Dark Continent. He survived both times but left deeply unsatisfied. The region offered no martial "victory", only a desperate battle for survival against nature, prompting him to ban further travel there to protect humanity.

Netero shared a lifelong, multi-generational history with the Zoldyck family of elite assassins, spanning from peer-level rivalries to professional contract hiring. In his youth, Netero took part in an unofficial voyage to the Dark Continent alongside his close friend, Maha Zoldyck (sometimes referred to as Zigg Zoldyck). Netero is noted as the only person to ever face the family patriarch, Maha Zoldyck, in combat and live to tell the tale.

Killua’s grandfather, Zeno, speaks of Netero with immense reverence, openly admitting that Netero always held the upper hand over him. Zeno famously noted that while he was a mere crying baby, Netero was already an old man. Because of this built-in trust, Netero explicitly hired Zeno Zoldyck to aid him during the Chimera Ant crisis. Zeno used his Dragon Dive technique to breach the palace and separate the Ant King from his Royal Guard, fulfilling his strict professional contract before leaving the rest to the Chairman.

The Zodiacs are twelve elite Hunters hand-picked by Netero to act as his inner council, counselors, and primary operators within the Association. Netero's logic for selecting them was uniquely eccentric. Rather than choosing sycophants, Netero intentionally filled the group with political rivals, radicals, and individuals he explicitly could not trust or who actively disliked him. He did this to ensure the Association would never become stagnant or complacent.

Despite their clashing ideologies (divided into hawks, liberals, and conservatives), the members held such intense respect for Netero that almost all of them altered their appearances, codenames, and behaviors to match the Chinese Zodiac sign he assigned them.

Netero created the Zodiacs to act as a stable governing body in the event of his death. Upon his passing, he left them a final testament tasking them with managing the succession of the Chairmanship and containing his secret son, Beyond Netero, from recklessly exploring the Dark Continent. If it was not possible to stop Beyond, then the Zodiacs were given the mission to beat him to the Dark Continent, as one last contest between father and son, which is the primary reason the Hunter Association is currently involved in the Succession War arc.

Netero’s final chapter unfolded during the Chimera Ant Extermination Arc, where he finally found the absolute, all-out fight he had spent his entire life searching for. Netero engaged the Chimera Ant King, Meruem, in a secluded weapons testing ground. Meruem fought to preserve Netero's life to learn from him, while Netero fought with pure, unadulterated intent to kill.

Despite attempting to strike Meruem thousands of times with his 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva and expending his entire life force in a massive aura blast called the Zero Hand, Meruem sustained only minor injuries and countered by severing Netero's right leg and left arm.

Realizing that raw Nen and martial arts could not bridge the evolutionary gap, Netero laughed maniacally, telling the King he knew nothing of humanity's infinite capacity for evolution and malice. Netero plunged his fingers into his own chest, piercing his heart to trigger the Poor Man's Rose, a low-cost, mass-produced, highly toxic weapon of mass destruction implanted inside his body. 

The resulting nuclear-like explosion completely vaporized Netero, incinerated Meruem's body (who was briefly revived by his guards before dying of the bomb's lingering poison), and ultimately saved human civilization at the cost of the Chairman's life.

Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers. 

• Nen Affinity: Isaac Netero's natural Nen affinity is Enhancement, as confirmed by series creator Yoshihiro Togashi.
