Appearance
Phinks Magcub is a tall, muscular member of the Phantom Troupe whose physical design is defined by two highly contrasting styles: an ancient Egyptian-inspired battle garb and a casual, modern tracksuit.
His most defining and intimidating facial feature is a total lack of eyebrows, paired with sharp, piercing black eyes. He has short, slicked-back blonde hair in the manga and 2011 anime adaptation, though in the 1999 anime adaptation, his hair was depicted as dark brown. Standing at 6'1" (185 cm) and weighing 187 lbs (85 kg), he has a highly toned, muscular physique fitting for the second-strongest arm wrestler in the Troupe.
When introduced in the Yorknew City arc and during the Chimera Ant arc, he wears a traditional Egyptian-themed outfit. This includes a golden, snake-like (Uraeus) pharaoh headpiece (nemes), a white long-sleeved tunic, and a matching statement necklace. However, when operating out in public or relaxing, he completely strips away the Egyptian theme for a basic, dark athletic tracksuit zipped up to the neck, paired with blue running shoes.
As member #5 of the Phantom Troupe, his spider tattoo features the number 5 on the spider's abdomen, though the exact physical location of the tattoo on his body has not yet been revealed in the series.

Personality
Phinks has a classic Enhancer personality: brash, hot-tempered, fiercely loyal, and direct. While he initially comes across as a ruthless, stereotypical brute, his character demonstrates a surprising amount of emotional depth, hidden sentimentality, and unwavering dedication to his comrades.
Phinks is incredibly short-tempered and prone to violent outbursts. He frequently gets into arguments and physical scuffles, even with his fellow Phantom Troupe members. He treats conflict like a sport. During the Chimera Ant arc, he turns clearing out the ants in Meteor City into a race with his comrades to see who can rack up the most kills. He doesn't sugarcoat his words and rarely holds back his true opinions, which often makes him appear aggressive or intimidating to outsiders.
Phinks values the survival and philosophy of the Phantom Troupe above all else. When Chrollo Lucilfer was captured by Kurapika, Phinks was prepared to let Chrollo die and hunt the "Chain User" down instead, because the rules dictate that the head is replaceable, but the "Spider" must survive. He respects the established hierarchy and regulations of the group. For instance, he strictly expects punctuality from his comrades, heavily criticizing those who arrive late to mandatory meetings.
Despite trying to kill Gon and Killua earlier, Phinks explicitly thanks them at the Southern Piece Auction for their role in Pakunoda’s final moments. He recognizes and respects their integrity. Phinks shows genuine, low-key care for his teammates. He quickly lends Shizuku his clothes when her outfit is destroyed in battle, and physically shields or carries the younger member Kalluto Zoldyck out of harm's way when Feitan unleashes his dangerous "Rising Sun" ability.
He was visibly grief-stricken following Pakunoda’s sacrifice. While he acts tough to mask his sadness, his actions speak loudly about how deeply he values his chosen family. When he isn't furious, Phinks has a surprisingly playful, snarky sense of humour. He enjoys teasing his teammates and can sometimes get clowned on by them in return for being overly dramatic.
Phinks is closest to Feitan Portor. They frequently partner up on missions and possess a natural "good cop, bad cop" style dynamic, where Feitan acts as the cold, calculating strategist and Phinks acts as the passionate, driving force.

Background
For years, Phinks’ past was shrouded in mystery, known only to have originated from Meteor City, the massive, politically unrecognized junkyard zone where residents have no official legal records. However, the Phantom Troupe Backstory Flashback (Chapters 395 to 397) completely recontextualized his origins.
As an 11-year-old in Meteor City, Phinks was a bit of a ruffian, originally clashing with Chrollo Lucilfer and Pakunoda alongside his close friend Feitan Portor over a stolen videotape. After Chrollo outsmarted them and used the tape to create a homemade, live-dubbed theater troupe for the local kids, Phinks was deeply moved. He abandoned his hostile attitude and enthusiastically joined Chrollo’s video dubbing club, volunteering to voice the character "Blue Cleaner".
The group's innocent childhood was violently shattered when their young friend, Sarasa, was kidnapped, brutally tortured, and murdered by outside human traffickers. The killers left a horrific, staged crime scene explicitly meant to mock the kids. Following Sarasa's death, Phinks stood by Chrollo when he vowed a life of horrific, calculated crime. Chrollo’s plan was to turn Meteor City into a global threat to attract the world's worst criminals via a "dark web" loophole, allowing the group to track down Sarasa's killers. Phinks swore his absolute, lifelong loyalty to Chrollo's dark crusade.
In the ongoing Succession Contest arc, Phinks is currently aboard the Black Whale 1, a massive whale-shaped ship heading toward the Dark Continent. The Troupe’s primary directive on the ship is to find and kill Hisoka Morow, who went on a murder spree targeting Troupe members, Shalnark and Kortopi, after losing to Chrollo at Heaven's Arena.
To maximize their search efficiency, Phinks has partnered up with Feitan and Nobunaga Hazama, navigating the lower decks (Tiers 3 to 5) controlled by the Kakin Empire's mafia families. To find Hisoka, Phinks and his sub-unit formed a strategic alliance with the Cha-R and Xi-Yu mafia families. This quickly dragged them into a direct confrontation with the chaotic, anarchic Heil-Ly Family, led by the radical Morena Prudo.
When a Heil-Ly assassin named Luini slaughtered Cha-R soldiers and attempted to recruit the Phantom Troupe into helping him destroy the ship, Phinks and his crew rejected him out of hand. Nobunaga subsequently executed Luini. Realizing the Heil-Ly use a magical "Contagion" Nen system that allows low-level thugs to level up by committing murders, Phinks, Feitan, and Nobunaga recognized them as an erratic threat that must be entirely crushed.
After the Xi-Yu Underboss Hinrigh Biganduffno successfully planted a tracking device on a Heil-Ly member, the hidden location of their hideout was exposed. Currently, Phinks and Feitan are navigating the chaos of Tier 3 and preparing to head up toward Tier 2. They are advancing directly toward the Heil-Ly hideout to slaughter Morena and her remaining inner circle before refocusing their attention back onto Hisoka.

Powers and Abilities
While Phinks is best known as a top-tier Enhancer utilizing his specialized Nen ability, Ripper Cyclotron, he possesses elite, superhuman baseline physical traits and professional criminal skills. Even if his Nen were completely sealed, he remains one of the deadliest unarmed combatants in Hunter x Hunter.
Physical and Combat Abilities
Immense Physical Strength: Phinks ranks second in the entire Phantom Troupe in arm wrestling, sitting just below the late Uvogin. His raw physical output is so vast that he can effortlessly snap human necks, break bones, and throw an ordinary pebble with the penetrative power of a high-velocity bullet.
Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: He exhibits hypersonic movement and reaction time. He was easily able to track Killua Zoldyck’s high-speed movements, dodge rocks thrown at him at point-blank range, and effortlessly intercept a blind-spot kick that Killua was certain would land.
High Durability and Stamina: His baseline physical conditioning allows him to shrug off heavy blunt force impact and fight through prolonged physical engagements without displaying exhaustion.
Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Phinks primarily relies on swift, lethal close-quarters martial arts. His favored strategy involves slipping past an opponent’s guard to quickly and silently twist their head completely around.
Master Tailing and Infiltration: He is exceptionally skilled at tracking targets undetected. During the Yorknew City arc, he tailed Gon and Killua (both of whom are highly trained in stealth) through dense crowds without them realizing they were being followed.
Unrecorded Existence: Because Phinks was raised in the lawless junkyard of Meteor City, he has absolutely no official identity records, fingerprints, or data profile anywhere in the global database. This makes tracking his past or predicting his movements legally and systematically impossible for authorities.

Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Phinks is a master Enhancer, a Nen category that allows him to channel his Nen to directly amplify his physical strength, defense, and destructive power. As the second physically strongest member of the Phantom Troupe (behind only the late Uvogin), his raw physical attributes complement his Nen perfectly.
Ripper Cyclotron: Phinks’ primary technique is a textbook execution of Enhancement Nen paired with a strict activation condition. To power up the ability, Phinks winds his right arm in a clockwise motion. Every single rotation of his arm continuously builds and exponentially concentrates Nen aura into his fist. The more times he cranks his arm, the more devastating his subsequent punch becomes. However, while preparing this attack, Phinks must physically spin his arm, leaving him momentarily exposed and defensive. Phinks himself does not always know the exact conversion rate of his power. During the Chimera Ant arc, he mistakenly over-rotated his arm 15 times to crush a target, realizing afterward that a mere 7 or 8 rotations would have safely sufficed.
Advanced Nen Applications and Combat Styles: Because Phinks is an elite combatant from Meteor City, he relies heavily on fundamental and advanced Nen techniques to supplement his straightforward fighting style
Ko: Ripper Cyclotron relies heavily on Ko, an advanced technique where a user focuses 100% of their aura into one specific body part. While his fist gains apocalyptic striking power, the rest of his body is left entirely unprotected.
Zetsu: Phinks is exceptionally skilled at Zetsu, completely shutting off his aura flow. This makes him an expert at tracking and stealth missions, allowing him to trail advanced targets like Killua Zoldyck without being sensed.
Ren: His massive base aura reserves allow him to withstand intense physical skirmishes without exhausting quickly.

Goals and Reputation
Pakunoda grew up in Meteor City, a junkyard wasteland entirely ignored by the rest of the world. Long before becoming ruthless thieves, Pakunoda, Chrollo, Franklin, Nobunaga, Uvogin,,, Phinks, and formed a close-knit theater group to voice-act and bring joy to the local kids.
Phinks' primary objective is protecting his found family and avenging murdered comrades. His focus includes hunting down Hisoka Morrow to avenge Shalnark and Kortopi, alongside a mission to completely eliminate the Heil-Ly family on the Black Whale.
Like Machi, Chrollo, and the other founding members of the Troupe, the ultimate root of Phinks' desensitization to mass murder stems from childhood, specifically the gruesome murder of his childhood friend Sarasa back in Meteor City. His foundational purpose is tied to Chrollo's master plan of making the world fear Meteor City to protect it from outside predators.
Despite operating as an international criminal, he retains intense local patriotism. He acts as an unofficial guardian of Meteor City, as seen when he and the Troupe wiped out the Chimera Ant infestation led by Zazan. Globally, Phinks is feared as an elite, high-profile career criminal capable of merciless mass casualties, such as his contribution to the Kurta Clan genocide. He is renowned for his physical capabilities, ranking as the second-strongest member of the Troupe in raw physical power.
Within the Troupe, he is recognized for being short-tempered, brash, and highly impatient, frequently calling out members who are late and prioritizing direct action over safe planning. During the Yorknew crisis, his hot-headed nature nearly sparked internal bloodshed when he wanted to break Chrollo's rules to hunt Kurapika.
Despite his aggressive demeanor, his allies know he is surprisingly practical, down-to-earth, and protective. He is trusted implicitly by his peers, often seen partnering closely with Feitan Portor.
In the Hunter x Hunter community, Phinks is highly popular for his distinctive fashion shift. He initially debuted wearing an Egyptian pharaoh headdress (referencing author Yoshihiro Togashi’s trip to Egypt) but transitioned into a highly casual Gucci-style tracksuit. Fans love how grounded and casual he looks compared to his more fantastical peers.
The fanbase frequently highlights his hidden soft side, labeling him a "secret sweetheart" to his allies. Memorable moments include him loaning Shizuku his clothes when hers were torn, carrying a rookie Kalluto away from Feitan's lethal "Rising Sun" explosion, and showing genuine gratitude to Gon and Killua for giving Pakunoda peace before her death.
His Nen ability, Ripper Cyclotron (which stacks infinite punch power the more he winds his arm clockwise), makes him a massive favorite in theoretical match-up debates. Because Togashi has never stated an upper limit to how much power he can generate if given time to wind up, the community loves pitting him against other physical powerhouses like Razor or Biscuit Krueger.
