Who Is Kite?
Kite is a powerful, high-ranking Contract Hunter in the anime and manga series Hunter x Hunter. He is a pivotal figure who serves as a mentor, role model, and the ultimate catalyst for the main protagonist, Gon Freecss. Kite was personally trained by Gon's elusive father, Ging Freecss, and is tasked with finding Ging as his final test.

Appearance
In the Hunter x Hunter series, Kite has two distinct physical appearances: his original human form and his later reborn Chimera Ant form.
Original Human Form
In his original body, Kite is a tall, slender man with a distinct, gaunt appearance. His design emphasizes a sharp, minimalist aesthetic. He has an inverted triangle-shaped face, a prominent hooked nose, a pointed chin, and sunken, almond-shaped eyes with small hazel irises.
He possesses exceptionally long, flowing white hair (often appearing light grey or silver) that reaches past his waist, and he wears a simple outfit consisting of a white long-sleeved turtleneck sweater, slim black trousers, and brown shoes. His most defining accessory is a large, light blue peaked cap or newsboy-style beret that partially covers his eyes.
Reborn Chimera Ant Form
After being killed by Neferpitou, Kite is miraculously reborn through the Chimera Ant Queen. In this second incarnation, Kite takes on the physical appearance of a young human girl who was previously killed by a Chimera Ant soldier. This version features long, bright red hair, purple eyes, full lips, and a face covered in prominent freckles.
While largely human in shape, this form retains a few Chimera Ant traits, including a slender tail. As a young teenager, Kite transitions to wearing a black leather suit, high boots, and a sword strapped to the hip.

Personality
Kite is defined by a stern, stoic, and pragmatic personality. While he frequently comes across as cold or blunt to the point of appearing rude, he possesses a deeply caring nature beneath his tough exterior.
Kite is a highly experienced Contract Hunter who views the world with absolute realism. He acts without hesitation, even when he needs to take a life to protect others. Although he has a cold demeanor, he cares intensely for others, especially animals and his allies. However, his care often manifests as "tough love." For instance, when saving a young Gon from a Foxbear, Kite immediately punched Gon to discipline him for his ignorance, which had caused the unnecessary death of the animal.
Unlike characters driven by pure emotion, Kite relies on tactical awareness, meticulous focus, and acute environmental perception. He remains composed even when dealing with his own erratic Crazy Slots ability, which constantly annoys him by giving him weapons he complains about.
After being reincarnated as a Chimera Ant (and Meruem's twin), Kite temporarily exhibited the joyful, enthusiastic traits of a human child. However, upon rapidly regaining his past human memories, his original mature and dominant personality returned. In this new form, Kite retains his core pragmatic kindness, actively helping characters like Gon and the Koala confront and assuage their intense guilt.
Background
Very little is known about Kite's exact birthplace. Before meeting Ging, he was a starving street urchin who lived in the sewers, fending for himself alongside stray animals. Kite's life transformed when he caught Ging Freecss in the sewers after stealing a loaf of bread. Ging noticed Kite's natural, involuntary affinity for animals, a core trait of elite Hunters, and took him under his wing.
Ging taught him survival skills, martial arts, and Nen, which allowed Kite to successfully pass the Hunter Exam. As a final graduation test, Ging challenged Kite to find him, a feat considered the most difficult hunt in the world.
In the original manga, while tracking Ging, Kite is actually the first character introduced. He saves a young Gon from a Foxbear on Whale Island. Crucially, Kite reveals to Gon that his father is not dead, but is actually one of the greatest Hunters in the world, and he leaves Ging’s Hunter License with Gon. This single interaction inspires Gon to become a Hunter.
The 2011 anime adaptation notoriously omitted this early meeting, introducing Kite much later right before the Chimera Ant arc which many consider to have a drastically negative effect on the impact of his reappearance in the story and greatly lessened the connection between Gon and Kite, making Gon’s emotional transformation over this arc less believable.
Years later, after Gon finishes Greed Island, he and Killua accidentally teleport to Kite, who is leading an ecological survey team in the Kakin Empire. The trio travels to the Neo-Green Life (NGL) Autonomous State to investigate an outbreak of mutated, human-sized Chimera Ants.
As they approach the ant nest, the terrifyingly powerful Royal Guard Neferpitou detects them. Instantly closing the distance, Pitou severs Kite's arm in a surprise blitz. Knowing they stand no chance, Kite orders Gon and Killua to flee the area, sacrificing himself to secure the boys' escape.
Kite is killed off-screen by Neferpitou. However, Pitou enjoys the rush of the fight so much that they use their Nen ability, Dr. Blythe, to stitch Kite’s corpse back together. His soulless, rotting body is turned into a puppet used to train new Chimera Ant soldiers, the discovery of which drives Gon into absolute despair and madness.
Though his physical body was desecrated, Kite did not truly disappear. Kite’s Nen ability, Crazy Slots, manifests as a clown slot machine that gives him random weapons. Ging later reveals to Gon that Crazy Slots has a hidden mechanism: a specific number (Slot #3, the mace) only appears when Kite has a fierce, absolute resolve not to die.
Thanks to this Nen soul-failsafe, Kite’s consciousness bypassed standard assimilation. When the Chimera Ant Queen dies giving birth to the King (Meruem), a tiny, secondary female baby is found inside her. The ant Colt rescues the baby, naming her Raina.
Due to Chimera Ant biology, Kite grows from an infant to a young teenage girl within a matter of months. She retains all of human Kite’s memories, personality, and intellect, and firmly demands to be called Kite again. At the end of the Chairman Election arc (Chapter 337 / Episode 147), Gon meets the reincarnated Kite.
Kite forgives Gon, reassures him that the sacrifice was his own error, and orders him to go reconcile with Ging. Kite vows that they will train together again to regain her past Nen strength. Currently, Kite remains safely in the known world under the protection of the Hunter Association, alongside Colt and the reformed Chimera Ant Koala.
While the focus of the current manga arc is entirely on the Succession Contest aboard the Black Whale ship heading to the Dark Continent, Kite remains a crucial figure on the mainland. Her current goal is managing the aftermath of the Chimera Ant outbreak while growing back into her full combat capabilities. It should be kept in mind that Pariston is in possession of a small Chimera Ant army and that Gon and Killua have recently been reintroduced to the main storyline, opening a door for the potential return of Kite.

Physical and Combat Abilities
Enhanced Strength: Kite possesses immense raw physical strength, estimated by Gon to be on par with close-combat specialists like Knuckle. In his very first appearance, he effortlessly bisected an adult Foxbear using just a single hand.
Immense Speed and Reflexes: He easily matches or exceeds the running speeds of Gon and Killua. His sharp instincts and reaction times allow him to effortlessly dodge or counter surprise attacks from Chimera Ants before they can even perceive his movement.
Enhanced Stamina and Endurance: Kite can travel massive distances on foot over harsh terrain alongside energetic young Hunters without showing a single sign of fatigue.
Astonishing Pain Tolerance: His mental fortitude and physical endurance are staggering. Even after having his arm completely ripped off by the Royal Guard Neferpitou, Kite managed to continue fighting through the night, ultimately inflicting visible wounds on the newborn royal guard.
Master Weapon Specialist: Because Crazy Slots forces him to wield weapons at random, Kite has mastered an incredibly broad arsenal to survive. He displays peak dexterity and lethal accuracy whether he is handed a firearm, a massive scythe, or a polearm.
Proficient Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Though he strongly prefers armed combat, it is heavily implied that Kite is highly capable of holding his own using strictly bare-knuckle martial arts when disarmed.
Keen Tactical Intellect: Kite is an elite strategist with extensive biological and environmental knowledge. He can instantly assess the threat level of an environment, identify an enemy's weakness, and construct precise countermeasures under immense pressure.
Survivor's Instinct: Having survived the roughest environments on his quest to track down Ging, Kite possesses unparalleled wilderness tracking skills, stealth, and situational awareness.

Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Kite’s primary Nen affinity is Conjuration. According to official character guidelines from Togashi, Kite also possesses a secondary dual affinity toward Transmutation.
Crazy Slots: When activated, Kite conjures a sentient, wisecracking clown holding a roulette wheel in its mouth. The roulette spins numbers from 1 to 9, with each number corresponding to a completely different weapon. Kite cannot choose which weapon he gets, the selection is entirely random. Furthermore, he must use the weapon given to him before the clown will disappear or grant another spin. By surrendering control to pure luck and adding these strict conditions, Kite’s Nen restriction vastly amplifies the destructive power of whatever weapon he rolls. Kite frequently sighs and complains that his draws are "bad rolls". However, the clown usually gifts him the exact tactical weapon needed to win the fight.
Known Weapons: Out of the nine possible weapons, only three were explicitly revealed during the series.
Slot #2: The Enormous Scythe: Kite conjures a massive, razor-sharp scythe.It can only execute a single, mandatory technique called Silent Waltz (Grim Reaper's Dance). When Kite swings the scythe in a complete 360-degree circle, it emits a devastating wave of aura that cuts through anything in its radius, capable of wiping out entire squads of Chimera Ants at once.
Slot #4: The Carbine Rifle: Kite conjures a long-barreled futuristic rifle with flawless accuracy. It is capable of shooting powerful, high-velocity bullets in rapid succession completely silently.
Slot #3: The Mace: Kite conjures a clown-shaped blunt mace. While its exact physical combat functions are largely unknown, the clown itself refers to it as a "good number".
The Secret Survival Failsafe: According to Ging, Crazy Slots contains a specific secret number that only manifests when Kite is facing death and holds an overwhelming, desperate will to survive. Kite rolled this secret slot (implied to be Slot #3, though not confirmed) right before being killed by Neferpitou. This triggered a form of post-mortem Nen. It acted as a soul-failsafe, bypassing normal biological processes to ensure Kite's spirit and memories successfully reincarnated into the Chimera Ant Queen's final offspring (Meruem's twin sibling).

Goals and Reputation
As a wildlife researcher, Kite’s goal was to discover, document, and protect rare animal species. He often mentored a group of amateur hunters, even financing the purchase of a mountain to protect indigenous swans from environmental destruction. After being reborn as a Chimera Ant (retaining his human memories), Kite’s goal shifts slightly toward protecting his new makeshift family, training his group, and serving as a future anchor for Gon.
Within the Hunter Association, Kite is known as a top-tier Nen user. His mastery of En allows him to extend a massive, completely undetectable radius of up to 45 meters. To young or aspiring hunters (like Spinner Clow and Banana Kavaro), Kite is revered as a selfless, reliable leader who takes kids seriously and funds their dreams.
Even to powerful entities like the Chimera Ant Royal Guard, Neferpitou, Kite's combat prowess earned massive respect. Pitou was so exhilarated by their battle, even though Kite fought with only one arm, that they kept his head as a trophy and resurrected his body just to re-experience the fight.
Kite is a generally well-loved but frequently debated character within the Hunter x Hunter fandom. Fans heavily associate Kite with the "cool uncle" or "foundational mentor" trope, drawing strong parallels to Shanks from One Piece. He is widely loved for his sleek character design and his uniquely unpredictable Crazy Slots Nen ability.
A major point of contention in the fanbase surrounds how the adaptations handled him. In the manga, Kite appears in the very first chapter. The 2011 Madhouse anime skipped this, only introducing him at the start of the Chimera Ant arc. This leads to ongoing fan debates over whether Gon’s extreme mental breakdown over Kite's death felt entirely earned or slightly sudden to anime-only viewers.
Power-scalers frequently clash over Kite. Some label him "mid" because he was overwhelmed relatively quickly by a newly-born Pitou. Conversely, a larger part of the fanbase defends him as vastly underrated, pointing out that he kept a Royal Guard occupied while missing an arm and protecting two children.
While fans are glad Kite is technically alive, his reincarnation as a young Chimera Ant girl is widely viewed as a "cop-out" by some. Certain fans argue it undermined the severe narrative weight and tragedy of Gon's ultimate sacrifice, but given that this decision opens a door for Kite to become involved in the potential Giro plot or to be reintroduced when Pariston’s stolen Chimera Ant army is eventually addressed, fans may have a different opinion of these events.
