Appearance
Illumi Zoldyck is a tall, slender young man with an expressionless, mask-like face, characterized by very long, jet-black hair and large, completely black, pupil-less eyes. His facial features rarely change, giving him an eerie and cold presence.
He has extremely long, straight, jet-black hair that usually falls past his waist and is neatly combed back behind his ears. His eyes are large, dark, and completely blank, appearing devoid of emotion or pupils. Illumi is tall and lean with a deceptively well-muscled frame beneath his clothing.
He typically wears a green or turquoise long-sleeved shirt and matching pants, accented by large yellow or gold circular pins embedded across the chest and collar area, though he occasionally wears simpler clothing, such as a dark tank top paired with loose trousers during casual arcs.
During the early stages of the Hunter Exam, Illumi changes his appearance entirely using Nen-infused needles. Under the alias Gittarackur, his skin becomes pale, his skull shape distorts, and dozens of large gold pins cover his face and head, topped with a spiky, mohawk-style haircut.

Personality
Illumi is a cold, emotionless professional assassin whose personality is defined by an extreme, twisted desire for control and a ruthlessly utilitarian mindset. He speaks in a strangely joyful, absent-minded tone that directly contrasts with his wide, blank stare and completely expressionless demeanor.
Illumi possesses a pathological obsession with his younger brother, Killua. He interprets his severe, overprotective brainwashing as a genuine form of brotherly love. To guarantee Killua's survival, Illumi secretly implanted a Nen needle into his brother's brain. This compelled Killua to cow and run away from any fight where victory was not 100% guaranteed, severely restricting his free will. According to Hisoka, Illumi suffers from a severe narcissistic complex, genuinely believing that Killua's submissive obedience equates to mutual affection.
Illumi strictly abides by the laws of the Zoldyck Family and obeys his parents without rebellion. He has stated he would willingly die if it guaranteed his family's safety. He acts exclusively out of self-interest or family benefit. This is heavily reflected in his Manipulation Nen, which strips away the humanity of his victims, turning living civilians into "Needle Men" who mindlessly work themselves to death.
However, one exception to who he perceives as his family is Alluka. Illumi completely refuses to recognize his sibling Alluka as a human being, viewing her terrifying power merely as an object to be secured, owned, and controlled. While he acts like a perfect, submissive Zoldyck tool, he secretly hides a maniacal desire for power. He becomes deeply fixated on controlling Alluka's wish-granting ability for his own ends.
Illumi is incapable of forming normal social bonds. His closest semblance of a friend is the chaotic clown Hisoka Morrow. Their relationship is strictly transactional and built on mutual lethal respect, culminating in a pre-arranged engagement contract where one is meant to eventually kill the other.

Background
Illumi is the eldest child of Silva and Kikyo Zoldyck, the leaders of the infamous Zoldyck family of elite assassins. Raised in the brutal environment of Kukuroo Mountain, he was conditioned from infancy through relentless physical torture, poison training, and psychological engineering to become the perfect, emotionless killing machine.
Because Illumi completely broke under the immense pressure of his upbringing, his personality became entirely hollowed out. His grandfather Zeno and father Silva deemed him unfit to lead the family business because they required an heir capable of independent thought, choosing his younger brother Killua instead.
Illumi developed a warped, smothering obsession with Killua. He spent years training, monitoring, and brainwashing him to ensure he would live only for assassination. To guarantee Killua's survival, Illumi secretly implanted a Nen-infused needle into Killua’s brain. This needle forced Killua to feel paralyzing fear and flee from any battle he was not 100% guaranteed to win.
Illumi shares a pragmatic, mutually beneficial relationship with Hisoka Morow. While they act as casual acquaintances, their bond is built entirely on murder and convenience, both openly acknowledging that their relationship would inevitably end with one killing the other.
Following Hisoka's brutal defeat and subsequent resurrection at Heaven's Arena, Hisoka began systematically slaughtering the Phantom Troupe. To escalate his deathmatch with the remaining Spiders, Hisoka took out a formal hit on himself and personally hired Illumi.
Illumi officially joined the Phantom Troupe and boarded the Black Whale 1 luxury liner, occupying the #11 spot previously held by the deceased Uvogin. He explicitly explains his presence to Chrollo Lucilfer and the other Spiders by revealing his "engagement ring", a pre-nuptial-style contract specifying that if Illumi successfully kills Hisoka, he receives a massive financial reward; if Illumi dies, he gets nothing.
Illumi is actively moving through the ship alongside his younger brother, Kalluto Zoldyck (who is also a Troupe member). On Day 4 of the voyage, the Zodiacs (the Hunter Association leadership) implement semi-martial law due to rising violence on the lower decks. Illumi and Kalluto are intercepted by Zodiacs Mizaistom and Botobai. Refusing an escort to the safer, upper VIP decks where the Succession War Contest is being carried out, Illumi insists on remaining on Tier 3, requesting a secure private room with a shower.
Illumi operates with complete transparency regarding his target, but his true allegiances remain highly unpredictable. He is currently balancing:
The Zoldyck Code: Fulfilling his active contract to kill Hisoka at all costs.
The Phantom Troupe Hunt: Cooperating with Chrollo’s orders to locate Hisoka, who is hiding somewhere disguised among the lower decks.
The Mafia War: Navigating Tier 3, which is heavily contested by the Kakin Royal Family's three competing mafia underworld families (the Xi-Yu, Cha-R, and Heil-Ly).
A massive HxH theory suggests Illumi is already dead, and the person interacting with the Troupe is Hisoka utilizing his Texture Surprise ability. Proponents point out that Illumi uncharacteristically used the polite first-person pronoun "Boku" (a pronoun Hisoka uses) instead of his usual blunt "Ore" during his introduction.
Other fans believe Illumi's primary motivation on the boat isn't the money, but tracking Kalluto's progress and ensuring a Zoldyck asset survives the inevitable clash between the Spiders, Hisoka, and Kurapika.

Powers and Abilities
Illumi Zoldyck is an elite professional assassin and the eldest child of the legendary Zoldyck Family. His powers primarily stem from his mastery over Manipulation-type Nen, which he channels through a set of specialized, aura-infused needles to alter bodies and mind-control targets. According to his close associate Hisoka Morrow, Illumi's combat prowess is roughly equal to his own, scoring a 95 out of 100 on Hisoka's personal battle radar.
Physical and Combat Abilities
Superhuman Strength: He possesses massive physical power typical of a high-ranking Zoldyck. He can easily dig through solid rock or earth barehanded to hide underground for days.
Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: Illumi can move at blistering speeds. He can sprint through a crowded area and insert needles into multiple targets before anyone can react or notice him.
Immense Endurance and Stamina: His physical reserves allow him to complete grueling missions without rest. He can stay entirely alert even after days of constant movement or concealment.
High Pain Tolerance: Due to torturous Zoldyck training, Illumi can tolerate extreme physical trauma without flinching. He readily alters his own facial bone structure, a process he describes as incredibly painful, without showing outward distress.
Advanced Stealth: Illumi can entirely erase his presence, making it impossible for even skilled martial artists to sense him unless he intentionally releases his bloodlust.
Master Thrower: He has flawless accuracy when throwing his trademark round-head needles. He can hit precise pressure points or lethal spots on moving targets from long distances.
Disguise and Infiltration: Even without Nen-assisted transformations, Illumi is a master actor and infiltrator. He uses voice modulation, physical acting, and basic clothing changes to perfectly blend into any environment.
Genius-Level Intellect: Illumi is highly strategic, analytical, and capable of predicting human behavior with terrifying precision. He handles complex internal family conflicts and coordinates mass-scale strategies on the fly.
Psychological Control: He is an expert at emotional manipulation and gaslighting. He uses his victims' psychological weaknesses, fear, and relationships against them to fracture their resolve.
Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Illumi Zoldyck is a pure Manipulator. His Nen skills center around channeled aura through special round-headed needles. He relies heavily on advanced emission to sustain his aura when the needles leave his body.
Body Alteration: Illumi pierces his own face or body with needles to reshape his muscle and bone structure. He uses this primarily to assume his erratic, pin-faced disguise known as Gitarackur. While he can change his face without needles, the transformation only lasts for about five hours and causes noticeable physical strain.
Hypnotic Spell (Hypnotic Needle): A single needle embedded deeply into a target's brain acts as a hidden subconscious trigger. It forces absolute obedience under specific conditions. He used this on his brother Killua Zoldyck, embedding a needle that forced Killua to flee from any fight where victory was not 100% guaranteed. The target is generally unaware of the needle's presence until they overpower the mental blockage.
Corpse Control: Illumi sticks needles into the skull of a recently deceased individual. He can fully animate and dictate the vocalizations and physical actions of a corpse. He notably used this technique to puppet a member of the Ten Don during the Yorknew City arc.
Needle People (Needlemen): Illumi infuses a larger variation of "lollipop" needles with massive amounts of malicious Nen aura and throws them directly into the brains of living targets. The victims instantly lose their free will, becoming mindless, obedient drones. They will perform suicidal, violent actions on his command, working themselves to death. A single scratch from these specialized needles can trigger the effect.

Goals and Reputation
Illumi is obsessed with ensuring Killua becomes the ultimate heir to the Zoldyck Family business. Illumi acts as a rigid enforcer of his parents' wishes. He views himself and others as mere instruments to maintain the wealth, power, and prestige of the family name.
Illumi shares a bizarre, transactional relationship with Hisoka Morow. Their ultimate pact dictates that Illumi must try to kill Hisoka, a deadly game that serves both Hisoka's desire for a thrilling fight and Illumi’s own hidden motives on the Black Whale voyage.
The Zoldyck name alone frightens most people in the world. Illumi’s presence radiates a cold, malicious aura that can completely paralyze lesser Nen users with fear. Hisoka scores Illumi’s combat strength at a 95 out of 100, ranking him mathematically higher than many members of the elite Hunter Association Zodiacs. He is widely recognized as one of the most proficient Manipulation-type Nen users alive.
Despite being a mass murderer responsible for thousands of deaths via his "Needle People" technique, global law enforcement and the Hunter Association actively avoid prosecuting him due to political immunity, fear, or situational convenience. His reputation for flawless infiltration and assassination earned him a temporary spot as Member #11 of the Phantom Troupe during the Succession Contest arc, making him a feared variable among the world's top criminals.
A massive part of Illumi's reputation in the fanbase centers on his obsessive, distorted relationship with Killua. The fanbase deeply loathes his actions, such as implanting a needle in Killua’s brain to control him and treating Alluka as an object. Despite his cruelty, fans are fascinated by the narrative irony that Illumi genuinely believes his abusive, overprotective control is a form of deep familial love. Discussions frequently analyze how his own ruthless assassin upbringing completely warped his sanity.
On a technical level, Illumi commands a lot of respect from the power-scaling community. Fans frequently reference Hisoka's power rating system, where Illumi is given a "95", ranking him higher than several members of the elite Zodiacs. His cold, emotionless efficiency and instant-win needle manipulation make him widely regarded as one of the most terrifyingly effective Nen users in the series.
Despite his lack of redeeming moral qualities, a distinct sub-faction of the fanbase embraces the "Illumi Supremacy" meme. These fans adore him precisely because he is unhinged, deadpan, and unapologetically villainous. They find his completely blank, unblinking eyes and creepy aesthetic to be a masterclass in psychological horror character design.
