Appearance
In the Hunter x Hunter series, Zeno Zoldyck is visually characterized as a wiry, elderly man of average height with striking, gravity-defying grey-white hair and a prominent Fu Manchu mustache. Despite his grandfatherly and slightly frail look, his appearance masks immense physical power and deadly assassin reflexes.
His short, spikey grey-white hair stands completely upright on his head. He has dark, sharp black eyes and thick eyebrows. He sports a long, droop-styled Fu Manchu mustache that frames his mouth and hangs past his chin. He stands at 161 cm (5'3") and weighs 58 kg (128 lbs). He is usually seen with his back hunched forward and his hands casually clasped behind his back.
Zeno's most iconic stylistic choice is the long, hanging fabric signs attached to the front of his traditional garb. These banners swap out between two different bold proclamations: "A Kill A Day" (一日一殺) and "Never Retire" (生涯現役). He wears a dark, combat-ready tunic reminiscent of traditional martial arts clothing, accented with white and gold trims depending on the anime adaptation.

Personality
Zeno Zoldyck is a pragmatic, highly professional assassin who treats killing strictly as a business contract rather than a source of pleasure. Despite his lethal occupation, he possesses a surprisingly witty, calm, and understanding disposition, making him one of the most level-headed members of the Zoldyck family.
Zeno shares a deeply trusting, professional bond with his son Silva, who is the current head of the family. Unlike the smothering, manipulative control exerted by Illumi and Kikyo, Zeno respects Killua's autonomy.
He operates solely for profit and mission completion. He will not risk his life or waste effort unless a contract demands it. Zeno takes pride in being an efficient killer, but he deliberately avoids harming innocent bystanders. When his "Dragon Dive" accidentally injured Komugi during the Palace Invasion, he lost all desire to continue the contract because it violated his principles.
Zeno views other members of the family primarily through a functional lens. He respects Illumi's proficiency as a ruthless assassin but does not share a close emotional bond with him or the tech-bound Milluki. Similarly, Zeno and Kalluto have very minimal direct interaction, as Kalluto is much closer to his mother.
Even in life-or-death battles, Zeno remains completely unflappable. He often displays a dry sense of humor and a quirky, grandfatherly demeanor. However, like other Zoldyck family members, Zeno treats Alluka less like a family member and more like an existential threat. He considers her "something from another place" rather than a true human child, enforcing strict rules regarding her dangerous wish-granting rules to ensure the family's survival.
While he expects his family members to be competent, he is notably more understanding and supportive of his grandson Killua's individual freedom than other family members, holding very high hopes for his future.

Background
Zeno was born into the legendary Zoldyck lineage on Kukuroo Mountain, inheriting a legacy of elite contract killing. He underwent brutal conditioning, granting him total immunity to lethal poisons and extreme pain tolerance. He lives by a strict professional code, heavily detailed by his alternating embroidered chest signs that read "One Kill Per Day" and "Active for Life".
Zeno openly states that the Zoldycks are strictly pragmatic businessmen who never risk their lives or kill for fun. He shares a decades-long professional relationship with Isaac Netero, the Chairman of the Hunter Association. He famously notes that Netero is one of the very few people old enough to have fought his own grandfather, Maha Zoldyck, and survived.
Zeno operates as a high-tier mercenary throughout the major narrative arcs of the series. During the Yorknew City arc, Zeno and his son, Silva, are hired by the Ten Dons to eliminate the Phantom Troupe. This leads to a legendary clash against Chrollo Lucilfer. Zeno pushes Chrollo to his absolute limit using his Dragon Lance technique but abruptly calls off the fight when their clients are assassinated by his own family members (Illumi, Kalluto, and Maha), voiding their contract.
During the Chimera Ant arc, Netero hires Zeno specifically to help separate the Chimera Ant King, Meruem, from his Royal Guards. Zeno summons a massive Nen beast to fly Netero and himself into the enemy palace before unleashing Dragon Dive, raining down thousands of aura shards that pierce the palace infrastructure. He leaves the battlefield immediately after an accidental stray blast injures a human civilian (Komugi), refusing to stay when a job deviates from his strict professional mandate.
Zeno makes brief appearances at the Zoldyck estate during the Chairman Election arc, navigating the internal family crisis regarding Killua’s wish to use Alluka’s reality-warping wish powers to heal Gon. In the ongoing Succession Contest, Zeno remains at the Zoldyck estate on Kukuroo Mountain.
While younger generations of the family (Illumi and Kalluto) have boarded the Black Whale 1 ship heading to the Dark Continent alongside the Phantom Troupe, Zeno has taken a back seat. He currently serves as an elder advisor and home guardian, leaving active, high-risk planetary expeditions to Silva and the younger Zoldyck line.

Powers and Abilities
As a master assassin trained from birth, Zeno Zoldyck possesses devastating physical and mental attributes completely independent of his Nen. Because the Zoldyck Family puts all heirs through brutal physical conditioning, Zeno has access to several superhuman base abilities.
Physical and Combat Abilities
Immense Strength: He can effortlessly lift, shatter, and clear concrete debris larger than his own body.
Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: His raw movement and reaction times allow him to match high-tier combatants like Chrollo Lucilfer. In close combat, he can block a strike with one hand while simultaneously executing a blinding flurry of punches with the other.
Enhanced Agility: He can leap massive distances with a single jump. He famously survived a two-kilometer free fall without taking any damage, landing gracefully on his feet.
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Zeno is highly lethal in unarmed combat. He can draw blood with simple chop strikes using the side of his hand and is an expert at using grappling methods to keep targets off-balance.
Extreme Poison Resistance: Like Killua and Silva, Zeno's lifelong training makes him completely immune or highly resistant to lethal toxins, gases, and poisons.
High Pain Tolerance: His body is conditioned to disregard extreme physical trauma, allowing him to fight at maximum efficiency even when injured.
High Intelligence and Battle Analytics: Zeno possesses a massive amount of tactical experience. He can perfectly predict an opponent’s movement patterns and counter complex strategies in a fraction of a second.
Assassination Techniques: Though he relies heavily on direct power, he is a master of base Zoldyck stealth training, including tracking, absolute presence erasure, and anatomical knowledge of lethal strike zones.

Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Zeno Zoldyck is a confirmed Emitter who possesses "Ultimate" tier proficiency, meaning he has completely maxed out his Nen potential. While early fan theories and older databooks incorrectly labeled him as a Transmuter, series creator Yoshihiro Togashi officially corrected this in his 2022 Puzzle Exhibition Nen Memo. Zeno heavily utilizes Transmutation to shape his aura into dragons, and uses Emission to detach and control them at extreme distances.
Dragon Lance (Long Tou Xian He): Zeno shapes his dragon aura into an extension of his arms. He can control the dragon's body movements with precision via hand gestures, tracking down agile opponents like Chrollo Lucilfer and piercing through solid structures. The aura remains connected to his body during this attack.
Dragon Head (Fang Thrust): Zeno detaches the transmuted dragon from his body and fires it as a massive, long-range kinetic projectile. This relies heavily on his primary Emission affinity to maintain the dragon's power and density across wide spaces.
Dragon Dive (Xing Xing Xiang Xing): Zeno launches a massive aura dragon into the sky, where it shatters into thousands of smaller, needle-like aura shards. These shards rain down like meteors over an immense area. They effortlessly pierce through reinforced concrete, as seen during the assault on the Chimera Ant palace.
Master-Level En: Zeno can project his aura web outwards to a radius of up to 300 metres. For context, a standard Nen master is considered exceptionally skilled if they can manage 50 metres. Zeno can maintain this massive sensory field for extended periods without showing signs of fatigue.

Goals and Reputation
Unlike many characters who chase world domination, wealth, or revenge, Zeno’s actions are dictated by a strict professional code. His slogan, written on his clothes, is "A Kill a Day". He only kills when paid and has stated he will not risk his life for free.
He values innocent lives. When his Dragon Dive technique accidentally injured Komugi during the Chimera Ant arc, he immediately lost his motivation to continue, as it violated his code. Zeno wants to secure the Zoldyck lineage. He openly supports Killua’s growth, recognizing him as the most talented grandchild in the family history.
Within the world of Hunter x Hunter, Zeno is viewed as a terrifying, living legend. His name alone makes experienced Nen masters tremble. His aura is so dense it triggers an immediate "fight or flight" response in skilled fighters. The Zoldyck family is so powerful that law enforcement and the Hunter Association openly recognize them and leave them completely alone.
He is famous for expanding his En up to a staggering 300 meters, whereas standard Nen masters consider 50 meters an elite achievement. Zeno was the hand-picked choice of Chairman Isaac Netero, one of the strongest humans alive, to assist on the highly volatile, top-secret Chimera Ant suppression mission.
Among the Hunter x Hunter fandom, Zeno is widely respected and holds a distinct, highly favorable reputation. Fans adore his calm, quick-witted, and pragmatic demeanor. His ability to casually deliver terrifying threats, like offering the mafia discounts on murders, makes him a community favorite.
Debates often point to Zeno as a baseline benchmark for absolute top-tier combat mastery. His Transmutation and Emission skills (like Dragon Head) are viewed as some of the most creative in the series. The fandom frequently uses his battle alongside Silva against Chrollo Lucilfer in Yorknew City to measure the upper ceilings of human capability.
Fans praise his self-awareness; he admitted Chrollo could beat him if Chrollo fought to kill, showing a lack of arrogance that the community respects. Additionally, he is heavily respected for his moral boundary regarding Komugi. In a world filled with unhinged villains, Zeno’s strict adherence to professional business rather than malice makes him a highly respected anti-hero.
