Alluka Zoldyck is the second youngest child of the infamous Zoldyck Family of assassins in the anime and manga series Hunter x Hunter. She is introduced during the 13th Hunter Chairman Election arc as a crucial figure needed to save the life of Gon Freecss. Alluka was assigned the male gender at birth, and the official databooks list her sex as male. Most of her family members and servants refer to her using masculine pronouns or dehumanizing terms like "it". However, she identifies as female. Her beloved older brother, Killua, always respects her identity, referring to her exclusively as his little sister and using feminine pronouns.

Appearance
Alluka Zoldyck from Hunter x Hunter is a young girl with a distinct look heavily influenced by traditional Japanese clothing. Her appearance changes completely depending on whether she is in her normal state or possessed by the entity known as Nanika.
She has long, black hair, styled with straight-cut bangs framing her face. Her eyes are large, dark blue, and expressive, and she has notably pale skin. Alluka wears a traditional Japanese shrine maiden (miko) clothing, featuring a white under-shirt, a pinkish-red vest, and a long green skirt.
She also has a yellow headband adorned with four distinct cartoonish emoji faces showing different emotions and two long, thin hair strands hanging down the front of her torso, held together by small beads carved with the same cartoonish faces. On her feet, she wears simple dark red or brown boots worn over white, knee-high socks.
When the mysterious entity Nanika takes control of her body, Alluka's facial features distort drastically. Her eyes turn completely pitch black and hollow, resembling void-like circles, and her mouth turns jet black as well, frozen in a wide, unnatural smile.

Personality
Alluka Zoldyck possesses a dual nature, presenting as a loving, innocent young girl, while sharing her body with Nanika, a mysterious, entity theorized to be from the Dark Continent. Despite being raised by a cold family of assassins who view her as a soulless monster, Alluka remains remarkably affectionate, compassionate, and sweet-natured.
The Core Personality (Alluka)
Alluka behaves exactly like a typical 11-year-old girl. She loves playing childish games like Shiritori and surrounding herself with dolls and toys. She is very social, cheerful, and loves to act spoiled around those she trusts, often wanting her head patted.
Her brother Killua was the only family member to ever show her compassion. Consequently, she trusts him blindly, feels protective of him, and always refers to him as "Big Brother". Alluka holds no malice or hatred toward her abusive family. She even selflessly asked Killua if things would be better if she simply disappeared.
The Alter Ego (Nanika / "Something")
When Nanika takes over to grant a wish, her face turns into a pale, black-eyed mask. While her wish-granting rules are brutal and terrifying, Nanika's actual personality is not malicious. Nanika acts like a needy entity that loves Killua just as much as Alluka does. She seeks his praise, wants to please him, and is easily hurt if Killua acts harshly toward her. Unlike Alluka, Nanika calls him "Killua" instead of "Big Brother".
Background
Alluka grew up in the Zoldyck mansion as a relatively normal, affectionate child until she was possessed by a mysterious entity. Her family began calling this secondary consciousness Nanika (meaning "Something"). The family discovered that when Alluka transforms into Nanika, she gains the ability to warp reality and grant limitless wishes. However, this wish-granting ability operates under a strict, terrifying rule system.
To make a wish, a person must first fulfill three requests made by Alluka that vary depending on the scale of the previous wish, so you may be asked for a hug or you may be asked to remove an organ.
If someone refuses Alluka's requests four consecutive times, that person, along with their loved ones and potentially thousands of innocent people, is instantly crushed to death. The severity of the requests scales heavily depending on how large the previous wish was.
The Zoldycks experimented with this power. Milluki used it to assassinate a target, but the subsequent requests became so impossibly dangerous that a family servant refused them, resulting in the brutal deaths of over 60 people. Realizing that Alluka possessed the raw power to wipe out their entire family in an instant, her father, Silva, deemed her a "dark and uncontrollable child" without a soul.
The family locked Alluka away in a high-security vault deep within the mansion. She spent years isolated in a room filled only with toys, completely cut off from human contact, with the family treating her as an object or a curse rather than a family member. Killua was the only member of the family who treated Alluka with love and compassion. Because of this bond, Killua discovered "secret rules" that the rest of the family didn't know.
Killua can issue commands to Nanika. When Killua commands Nanika, the wish is granted automatically with zero backlash or subsequent deadly requests. However, Nanika is not good at healing, so she needs to be within close proximity of a person if she is to heal them, such as when Killua has her heal Gon.
Alluka is formally introduced when Killua returns to Kukuroo Mountain to break her out of prison. Killua's best friend, Gon Freecss, is on his deathbed after over-exerting his Nen to defeat Neferpitou. Killua knows that only Nanika's reality-warping power can heal Gon.
Illumi, fearing that the consequence of healing Gon will destroy the Zoldyck family, pursues Killua to kill Alluka. Killua manages to evade his family and reaches the hospital. He commands Nanika to heal Gon, which she does successfully. When Illumi tries to corner Killua to permanently control Nanika, Killua commands Nanika to teleport Illumi back home, effectively saving them both.
After Gon is fully recovered, Killua makes a promise to Alluka to protect her and keep her safe from their family. He tells her that he wants to show her the outside world after she spent so many years locked away in a room. Killua and Alluka bid farewell to Gon and set out to travel the world together.
Within the series, the Zoldyck family and their servants often refer to Alluka using masculine or gender-neutral terms. However, Killua explicitly states that Alluka is a girl and calls her his sister. Because Killua is the only one who truly understands and loves her, the story treats her as a trans girl, and fans universally refer to her with she/her pronouns.
While Alluka and Killua are currently away traveling and absent from the active Succession Contest arc, the manga has officially confirmed a staggering detail regarding her origin. Nanika is a creature known as Ai, a gaseous, codependent lifeform hailing from the Dark Continent. Decades ago, Killua’s great-great-grandfather, Zzigg Zoldyck, journeyed to the Dark Continent alongside Isaac Netero. It is heavily implied that Zzigg accidentally brought this entity back with him, which ultimately passed down through the generations until it possessed Alluka.

Powers and Abilities
In Hunter x Hunter, Alluka Zoldyck herself has absolutely no combat, physical, or Nen abilities. Unlike her siblings, she never underwent the Zoldyck Family's brutal assassination training and possesses the physical strength and endurance of an ordinary, fragile child.
However, her legendary, rule-defying powers come entirely from Nanika, a mysterious entity from the Dark Continent that possesses and coexists within Alluka's body. While Togashi's creator notes technically classify Alluka's Nen archetype as a Specialist, she cannot wield aura herself. Instead, she acts as the physical medium and conditional trigger for Nanika's reality-warping abilities.
Physical and Combat Abilities
Empathic Link: While Alluka lacks supernatural power of her own, she possesses a unique Empathic Link with Nanika. She is the only person who inherently understands Nanika's emotions, perceiving the entity not as a monstrous parasite, but as a gentle, distinct companion that she fiercely loves and protects.
Human-Level Strength: Possesses the physical endurance, lifting strength, and striking power of an ordinary young child rather than a trained Zoldyck assassin.
No Assassination Training: Exempted from the grueling physical conditioning, poison resistances, and martial arts training enforced on her siblings.
Lack of Combat Skills: Incapable of defending herself physically or engaging in combat.

Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Alluka Zoldyck is officially classified as a Specialist, though her reality-warping wish-granting powers do not originate from standard Nen training. Instead, her abilities stem from Nanika (meaning "Something"), a mysterious entity from the Dark Continent that possesses her body. While the Zoldyck family classifies the phenomenon as a Specialization Nen ability, it operates under unique cosmic rules that bypass standard human Nen limitations. As such, Alluka is grouped into the Specialization category because her powers are entirely unique and cannot be replicated by any of the other five standard Nen types.
Dark Continent Parasite: It is strongly heavily implied that Nanika belongs to the "Ai" species, a gaseous, codependent lifeform from the Dark Continent. Therefore, the power functions less like an awakened aura (Hatsu) and more like an alien entity's natural biological trait.
Wish-Granting: Alluka and Nanika share a "request and reward" relationship that allows them to grant virtually any wish with zero upper limits, ranging from infinite wealth to reality-warping teleportation. However, the cost of these wishes operates on strict, terrifying conditions.
The Three Requests: Alluka will approach a person and make three simple, childlike demands (e.g., asking to hold hands, pat her head, or for a piece of candy).
The Wish: Once the person successfully fulfills all three requests, Alluka's eyes and mouth turn pitch black, indicating Nanika has taken over. Nanika will then grant a single wish from that person.
The Backlash: The difficulty of Alluka’s next three requests scales exponentially based on the magnitude of the previous wish. If someone wished for billions of dollars, the next target might be asked for their internal organs.
The Penalty for Failure: If a target refuses Alluka’s escalated requests four times in a row, they die instantly along with their most loved person. If the previous wish was massive, the death toll multiplies, killing large groups of people based on the amount of time they have spent with the target.
Direct Commands: Killua can issue a "command" rather than a wish. Nanika will grant his commands immediately with zero conditions and no future request backlash.
Healing Loophole: When Nanika is ordered to heal someone, she must physically touch them. Healing wishes do not trigger cruel request conditions afterward because Nanika takes joy in fixing things.

Goals and Reputation
Alluka is unique among her assassin family because she completely lacks malicious intent or a desire for power. Her primary motivations are to stay with Killua, protect Nanika, and live freely. After spending years locked in a underground vault, she deeply desires to live a normal life filled with affection and play.
Her ultimate goal is simply to be by her brother's side and explore the world with him. She loves the dark entity inside her, treating Nanika as a sibling rather than a curse, and wants to keep her safe from exploitation.
Within the world of Hunter x Hunter, Alluka herself is virtually unknown to the public, but her existence represents existential terror to those who know her secret. Her parents, Silva and Kikyo, view her as an entity without a soul. Out of sheer fear of her world-altering power, they stripped her of autonomy and locked her away.
Her eldest brother, Illumi, sees her as an incredibly dangerous liability. Because a failed wish demand can slaughter dozens of innocent people, she is treated as a walking weapon of mass destruction. Her family deliberately distances themselves from her identity, using male pronouns ("son") to treat her like an object. Only Killua and a few loyal butlers respect her identity as a girl.
In the real-world Hunter x Hunter community, Alluka is a highly discussed and polarizing figure. She is often celebrated as an incredibly sweet, loving character who gave Killua a true purpose and completed his emotional maturity arc. She is also widely praised as a monumental piece of positive trans representation in anime.
However, she is critiqued by a section of the fandom as a literal deus ex machina (plot device) introduced purely to heal Gon without consequences. Though, this isn’t quite right, since while Gon was healed, he lost the ability to sense Nen and also lost Killua as a consequence of his selfish decision.
While some fans feel her relationship with Killua was shoehorned in too late, it is explained in the story that he had forgotten her existence due to Illumi’s needle. Other detractors occasionally blame her for separating the legendary duo of Gon and Killua at the conclusion of the anime, but this event is more Gon’s fault rather than the fault of the innocent girl who was locked away from the world.
