Who Is Bonolenov Ndongo?

Bonolenov Ndongo is an antagonist from Yoshihiro Togashi's popular manga and anime series Hunter x Hunter. He is a prominent Nen user and serves as member #10 of the Phantom Troupe, a notorious global gang of thieves. Visually striking, he resembles a mummy as his entire body is wrapped tightly in bandages, typically worn alongside boxing gloves and trunks.

Appearance

Bonolenov is covered from head-to-toe in white bandages. In the 2011 anime adaptation and the original manga, he wears white bandages. In the 1999 anime adaptation, these bandages are reddish-brown. Over his bandages, he sports bright red boxing gloves, orange shorts, and red knee-high boots. He also occasionally wraps a loincloth over his shorts.

Under the bandages Bonolenov is completely bald and has countless pierced holes of varying sizes running through his body, including a massive hole in his abdomen and singular holes through each of his fingers. He uses these holes like a wind instrument to play music during battle via his "Battle Cantabile" Nen ability.

As member #10 of the Phantom Troupe, he bears the signature twelve-legged spider tattoo with the number "10" on its abdomen, though its exact location on his body remains hidden.

Personality

Bonolenov Ndongo is a composed, formal, and deeply prideful warrior who contrasts with the more chaotic or sadistic members of the Phantom Troupe. Despite his monstrous, mummy-like appearance, his demeanor is rooted in an ancient tribal warrior ethos.

He speaks in a formal, regal tone that sounds more like a dignified noble than a ruthless world-class thief, and he is a man of few words who rarely speaks unless necessary, making him seem aloof and quiet. Bonolenov views combat as a form of art, moving and fighting with the deliberate fluidity of a ritualistic dancer.

He carries a fierce, unwavering pride for his birthplace, the Gyudonond tribe, and treats his fights as holy rituals dedicated to his ancestors, actively utilizing his tribe's traditional "Bop-dance" to generate Nen melodies through the holes in his skin. Unlike allies like Phinks or Feitan who seek out violence, Bonolenov generally prefers to fight only when provoked or when defending his comrades.

He maintains an icy, unshakable composure on the battlefield, analyzing his opponent's capabilities before striking. While he is not inherently sadistic, he possesses immense confidence and a distinct warrior's bloodlust that makes weaker Nen users tremble. Bonolenov understands his own tactical limitations, openly acknowledging that his highly conspicuous combat style makes him a poor choice for subtle infiltration or disguise missions.

He is fiercely protective of his fellow Spider members, taking it upon himself to avenge fallen comrades and strictly adhering to Chrollo's directives. His loyalty is deeply tied to his background. After modern industrialization drove his nomadic tribe out of their homeland, he found a new family, purpose, and shelter within the ranks of the Troupe.

Background

Unlike most Phantom Troupe members who grew up as abandoned children in Meteor City, Bonolenov is an outsider who joined the group later. He was born into the Gyudonond tribe (also translated as the Bapu tribe). It is a small, nomadic group of dancing warriors.

When a boy in the tribe turns three, his body is pierced with needles. Over time, these needles are replaced by progressively larger objects, such as bamboo sticks and stones, until they leave permanent gaping holes. By moving his body, air passes through these holes to create distinct whistling sounds. 

The tribe performs these ritual dances to summon warrior spirits before entering battle. Bonolenov channels this into his Nen ability, Battle Cantabile, using music to manifest physical armor, spears, or a giant planet-like mass (Jupiter) to crush enemies.

Modernization and industrialization destroyed his tribe's ancestral homeland. Left displaced and stateless, Bonolenov eventually crossed paths with Chrollo Lucilfer and joined the Phantom Troupe, taking immense pride in keeping his dying culture's battle tradition alive through his criminal exploits.

During the current Succession War arc, Bonolenov is aboard the Black Whale 1, a massive migration ship heading toward the Dark Continent. The Phantom Troupe has infiltrated the vessel with the primary goal of hunting down and killing Hisoka to avenge their fallen comrades, Shalnark and Kortopi.

Recognizing that Hisoka's lethal hit-and-run tactics are highly dangerous, Bonolenov explicitly partners with Chrollo Lucilfer. Because Bonolenov admits he is not a mastermind strategist, he offers his Nen to Chrollo to serve as the perfect tactical tool.

During their brief strategy discussion, Bonolenov revealed a new application of his abilities called Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen. This technique allows him to completely alter his physical form to mirror someone else, provided he has spent time with and spoken to that person.

To flush Hisoka out and bypass the ship’s strict military checkpoints, Bonolenov uses Metamorphosen to move seamlessly through the higher decks where the Kakin elite and the mafia families operate. However, while operating on the upper tiers, lower-level Mafia enforcers cross paths with his disguised form. 

Bonolenov effortlessly neutralizes these threats, brutally killing Lynch and incapacitating her partner Zachuro, proving he is still a cold-blooded and merciless executioner when the Troupe's goals are on the line. He then disguises himself as Hisoka and negotiates a tense, temporary truce with the Xi-Yu family underboss, Hinrigh, agreeing to let the Mafia handle their internal gang war while he continues his hunt.

In Hunter x Hunter, Bonolenov Ndongo, Member #10 of the Phantom Troupe, is a Conjurer. • The Gyudonond Dance (Melodic Combat): By removing his boxing gloves and peeling back his mummy-like bandages, Bonolenov exposes his skin to the open air. Moving, leaping, and twisting at high speeds forces air directly through his skeletal cavities. The rhythmic choreography allows him to play specific, haunting melodies mid-battle. Even without Nen added, the sheer frequency and jarring tempo of this tribal music can trigger dizziness, exhaustion, and nausea in anyone within earshot.

• Warrior Status: Those from his tribe who master this musical dance are recognized as elite protectors called "Bapu" (dance warriors).

• Superhuman Conditioning: As a high-ranking member of the Phantom Troupe, his baseline physical stats are immensely elevated.

• Spear Mastery: He possesses expert-level proficiency in basic armed combat, utilizing traditional polearms with deadly accuracy.

• Eighth-Rank Strength: He places 8th in the Troupe's official arm-wrestling rankings, sitting comfortably above physically imposing members like Nobunaga.

Nen Affinity and Abilities

Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers. 

• Nen Affinity: Bonolenov’s primary Nen affinity is Conjuration. As a Conjurer, Bonolenov channels his aura through his unique tribal heritage to materialize physical objects and armor. According to the official Hunter x Hunter exhibition charts released by series creator Yoshihiro Togashi, Bonolenov is classified as a pure Conjurer, though his advanced techniques incorporate other categories. He uses Transmutation to alter his form or potentially manipulate properties of his aura and Emission to project and direct his massive conjured constructs, like Jupiter, over a distance toward his target.

• Battle Cantabile: Prologue: By performing a specific dance, Bonolenov conjures traditional tribal warrior equipment directly onto his body. This includes a patterned warrior mask, distinctive body armor, and a large, two-sided spear that he wields with high precision.

This melody allows him to conjure a massive, high-density sphere resembling the planet Jupiter. The sphere pursues targets at the speed of sound and completely crushes them under intense pressure.

• Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen: A versatile transformation ability. It allows Bonolenov to perfectly disguise his body and shape-shift into other individuals, such as his fellow Troupe members or targets he needs to track or impersonate.

Bonolenov’s motivations stem from his tragic background as a member of the Gyudondond tribe, a nomadic group displaced by modern development. He holds an intense pride in his heritage and explicitly fights to prove that his people possess the most graceful and beautiful fighting posture in the world.

Though not a founding member of the Troupe, he shares an absolute loyalty to Meteor City. He actively fought to purge the Chimera Ants when they invaded it. During the Succession War arc on the Black Whale, his primary ongoing mission is to track down and kill Hisoka Morow to avenge the brutal deaths of his comrades, Shalnark and Kortopi. 

Bonolenov is a self-proclaimed non-strategist who thrives on structure. He relies heavily on Chrollo’s direct orders and acts as a dependable executor of the leader's will. Within the World of Hunter x Hunter he is considered a Class-A bounty. To the general public, the Mafia, and the Hunter Association, Bonolenov is viewed as a terrifying, cold-blooded terrorist and mass murderer associated with the world's most infamous criminal gang.

Within the Phantom Troupe, "Bono" is highly valued. He holds a familial bond with members like Phinks and Shizuku. Despite ranking 8th in physical strength within the group, his unique melody-based combat functions as a highly respected, heavy-hitting asset.

Bonolenov occupies a very specific, fascinating space in the Hunter x Hunter community. Fans deeply respect him for his absolute lack of arrogance. Unlike flashier villains, he is quiet, polite, and practical.
