Perona, also known as the "Ghost Princess," is a major supporting character and former antagonist in the popular anime and manga series One Piece. She initially debuted during the Thriller Bark Saga as one of the "Mysterious Four" high-ranking officers serving under the warlord Gecko Moria. Over time, she evolved into a fan-favorite anti-hero with close ties to major characters like Dracule Mihawk and Roronoa Zoro.

Appearance

Perona, also known as the "Ghost Princess", is a distinctly recognizable character defined by her Gothic Lolita fashion aesthetic, long light-pink hair, and unusually large, round black eyes. Her stylized eyes feature thick, asymmetrical lower eyelashes that resemble painted-on heavy eyeliner. Throughout the series, her look evolves dramatically across different story arcs.

Pre-Timeskip (Thriller Bark Arc)

During her introduction, Perona's style leans heavily into a youthful, dark-monarch theme. Her pink hair is styled into two thick twin-tails held together by black hair ties, with the ends curled into tight, drill-like spirals. 

She wears a small, ornate, dark red crown pinned slightly to the side of her head, and a short, red skirt worn with a white, long-sleeved shirt with a high collar and a black buckled choker. She wears knee-high, buckled dark red boots over black-and-white horizontally striped tights. She is almost always seen carrying a red toy parasol with a small, cute demon face on the canopy.

Post-Timeskip (Kurakura Island & Sabaody Return)

After the two-year timeskip, Perona's look shifts to a much more glamorous, mature, and traditional Gothic attire. Her hair is longer, dropping the twin-tails to flow down her back in long, elaborate spiral braids. Her crown is replaced by a massive, wide-brimmed black top hat adorned with a purple decorative flower and long frills. 

She shifts to a long, form-fitting black dress featuring a white frilled trim along the bust and a layered, flowing skirt. She trades her red parasol for a dark purple one and carries a plush teddy bear version of her former zombie servant, Kumashi. She also sports a light yellow tattoo of a cross on her left bicep.

Egghead Arc / Later Appearances

When Perona infiltrates Hachinosu (Pirate Island) to rescue Gecko Moria, her look shifts into a stealthier, casual variant of her signature style. She wears a dark, long-sleeved hooded cloak or dress zipped up to her neck, trading her oversized hats for a more practical, low-profile gothic look suited for infiltration. She retains her dark color palette and striped aesthetics but leans away from the bulky dress silhouettes of her previous forms.

Personality

Perona has a highly eccentric, childish, and bratty personality paired with a hidden sentimental side. Though she initially appears as a confident, gothic antagonist, her demeanor shifts drastically depending on her environment and who she is interacting with.

Perona acts heavily on her own whims. She hates being told what to do, throws temper tantrums, and cries when things do not go her way. She has an extreme fixation on cute aesthetics, specifically stuffed animals and plushies. Paradoxically, she loves her zombie bear servant, Kumashi, for his looks but constantly bosses him around and forbids him from speaking because his deep voice ruins his "cuteness".

Due to her powerful Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow-Hollow) Devil Fruit, she starts off highly overconfident and dismissive of opponents. However, she completely loses her composure and panics when confronted with things she fears, famously passing out from a severe phobia of cockroaches.

Despite her bratty exterior, Perona is intensely loyal to Gecko Moria, who took her in and raised her like a daughter. Her motivation revolves entirely around ensuring his safety and reuniting with him. When separated from her crew, her lonely, softer side emerges. During the time skip on Kuraigana Island, she reluctantly but thoroughly treats Roronoa Zoro's severe wounds and builds a domestic, albeit bickering, relationship with both him and Dracule Mihawk.

Background

Perona is a major supporting character in One Piece whose deep filial loyalty to Gecko Moria drives her entire backstory and current storyline involvement. Originally introduced as a major antagonist during the Thriller Bark Arc, she has evolved from a selfish villain into a crucial wildcard in the final saga.

Perona was orphaned at a very young age in the West Blue. She was found and adopted by the former Warlord Gecko Moria while she was still a child. Despite Moria's ruthless pirate nature, he raised her like his own daughter. Perona deeply loves and views him as a true father figure. Growing up within Moria's crew, she became one of the "Mysterious Four". She commanded both the Wild Zombies and the Surprise Zombies using her Devil Fruit powers.

At some point in her youth, she consumed the Hollow-Hollow Fruit, allowing her to create negative ghosts that drain the willpower of anyone they pass through. During the Thriller Bark arc, Perona managed to single-handedly incapacitate most of the Straw Hat crew. However, she was hilariously defeated by Usopp, whose natural, extreme negativity made him completely immune to her ghosts.

During the chaos, Bartholomew Kuma used his powers to slap her away to Kuraigana Island. This ruined castle was the home of the world's strongest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk. When Kuma later sent Roronoa Zoro to the same island, Perona begrudgingly patched up his wounds. She lived with Mihawk and Zoro for two years, forming a bickering, domestic, family-like dynamic with them while helping Zoro train and navigate.

After the timeskip, she helped Zoro reunite with the Straw Hats at Sabaody Archipelago. She later returned to live with Mihawk until she read a newspaper revealing that Moria, long presumed dead, was actually alive. Upon learning Moria was alive, Perona immediately left Mihawk to infiltrate Pirate Island (Hachinosu), the stronghold of the Blackbeard Pirates.

While sneaking around the island, she found SWORD Marine Captain Koby, who was also held captive by Blackbeard. The two formed a temporary alliance: Perona agreed to free Koby from his chains if he helped her break Moria out of his cell. Perona successfully located and unlocked Moria's prison cell. 

This jailbreak triggered the massive chaotic battle on Hachinosu involving Marine SWORD, Monkey D. Garp, and the Blackbeard Pirates. With Koby's assistance and Garp's distraction, Perona and a weakened Moria managed to escape captivity on Hachinosu.

Powers and Abilities

Perona almost entirely derives her combat strength entirely from the Paramecia-type Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow-Hollow Fruit), which allows her to generate and control ghosts. Rather than relying on physical strength or Haki, she acts as a powerful "glass cannon" capable of incapacitating top-tier fighters using psychological and explosive spiritual attacks.

Devil Fruit

Devil Fruits are mystical, rare fruits from the anime and manga series One Piece that grant the person who eats them a unique superpower. However, taking even a single bite of a Devil Fruit comes with a heavy price: the eater permanently loses the ability to swim. Perona ate the Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow-Hollow Fruit), a highly potent Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that transforms her into a "Ghost Human". This fruit grants her the unique ability to produce, control, and transform into ghosts, giving her an incredibly versatile moveset that ranges from psychological warfare to explosive combat.

• Astral Projection: She can project her own spirit out of her body as a giant hollow. In this form, she can fly, levitate, change her spectral size, and pass through solid objects. She is entirely immune to physical harm or standard attacks while projected. While utilizing her astral projection, Perona’s physical body falls entirely limp and unconscious. If an enemy discovers her hidden, real body, she is completely vulnerable. Additionally, in her projected spirit form, Perona cannot physically interact with or directly harm objects or people; she must rely on her explosive familiars to deal physical damage.

• Ghost Network: Perona can link her consciousness to multiple ghosts scattered across a vast area. This creates an invisible surveillance network, allowing her to spy on enemies and gather intelligence safely from a distance.

• Explosive Ghosts: She can create specialized ghosts designed for raw destruction. Mini Hollows attach to enemies and detonate with a finger snap (Ghost Rap), creating blasts strong enough to tear through stone. Toku Hollows (Special Hollows) are much larger variants that trigger massive, devastating shockwave explosions.

Physical Abilities and Combat Skills

• Surprising Carrying Capacity: Despite her fragile, petite "Gothic Lolita" appearance, she possesses enough physical strength to carry her massive zombie stuffed bear, Kumashi, who is many times larger and heavier than her.

• Candle Weaponry: During her fight with Usopp, Perona carried a candelabrum to launch a fire-based attack, attempting to burn him alive.

• Sneak Attacks: She effectively coordinates distractions, using her environment to setup trap-like situations for her opponents.

• Zombie Commander: On Thriller Bark, she served as the commander of both the Wild Zombies and Surprise Zombies. She managed a massive army of the undead with strict authority and organized a highly cohesive defense network.

• Cooking: During the two-year timeskip on Kuraigana Island, Perona successfully managed the household duties for herself and Dracule Mihawk, proving to be an adept cook.

• Navigation: She has demonstrated a strong capability to navigate the open seas independently when searching for her captain, Gecko Moria.

Haki

In the One Piece universe, Perona has not been shown using Haki, but her Devil Fruit ability acts as a direct counter to it. Perona ate the Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow-Hollow Fruit), which lets her spawn "Negative Hollows". Haki translates directly to "willpower" or "fighting spirit" but when a ghost passes through a person, it completely crushes their will to live, sending them into immediate depression. Because Haki relies entirely on the user's strong will, losing that willpower means they cannot activate or maintain their Haki.

Trafalgar Law established that extremely powerful Haki can resist or reverse the effects of standard Devil Fruit status conditions. Though, unlike Logia users who can still be struck by Armament Haki, Perona’s ghosts are completely non-physical astral projections. They pass through physical boundaries effortlessly. What this likely means is that a top-tier fighter (like Shanks or Kaido) might withstand her powers through sheer, overwhelming Haki output. However, if a Negative Hollow successfully passes through them before they activate a defensive Haki shield, their fighting spirit is temporarily neutralized.

• Armament Haki: Creates an armor-like force that strengthens attacks and defenses, allowing armament haki users to harm Devil Fruit users and ignore their powers. 

• Observation Haki: Gives individuals a sixth sense that allows them to perceive and predict their opponent's movements. In its advanced form, they can see moments into the future. 

• Conqueror's Haki: A rare form of Haki that allows individuals to knock out those with weak wills. With advanced control, conqueror’s Haki users can coat their body with this Haki to further enhance their attacks.

Perona's personal motivations have evolved from selfish indulgence to deep familial loyalty. Moria raised Perona from childhood like a daughter. Her primary motivation is helping him and ensuring his safety. She recently infiltrated Hachinosu (Pirate Island) and successfully broke Moria out of Blackbeard's prison.

Beyond her loyalty and familiar love for Moria, Perona is obsessed with cute toys and animals. She originally wanted to turn all the world's cute creatures into her personal zombie servants. She prefers a life of luxury and comfort, which she briefly found while living in Dracule Mihawk's castle.

Within the One Piece universe, Perona is recognized as a formidable and highly annoying adversary. She was feared as one of the "Mysterious Four" officers under the Warlord Gecko Moria. Her Horo Horo no Mi (Hollow-Hollow Fruit) lets her bypass physical armor to drain an enemy's will to live. This makes her dangerous, even to top-tier fighters who rely heavily on willpower and Haki.
