Who Is Shanks?

"Red-Haired" Shanks is the chief of the Red Hair Pirates, one of the Four Emperors (Yonko) ruling the New World, and the man who inspired Monkey D. Luffy to become a pirate. He is one of the most powerful, influential, and mysterious figures in Eiichiro Oda's manga and anime series, One Piece.

Appearance

Shanks is a tall, muscular man with a tan complexion. Standing at 199 cm (6'6"), he has normal human proportions compared to the other original massive, inhumanly shaped Emperors of the Sea in One Piece. His signature deep red hair is parted slightly past the middle, styled wavier and more slicked back post-timeskip. In the black-and-white manga panels, his hair is uniquely filled with a distinct greyscale tone.

He has a set of three parallel, linear scars crossing vertically over his left eye, given to him by Blackbeard, and he is typically seen with a short, unkempt patch of stubble on his chin. Shanks is also notably missing his left arm below the shoulder, having sacrificed it to save a young Monkey D. Luffy from a Sea King. His eyes are drawn with a narrow, sharp look, matching his commanding presence.

Shanks wears a remarkably long, black, collared cloak draped over his shoulders, hiding his missing arm. He also wears a white, collared, button-up shirt left half-undone to expose part of his chest, brown, baggy, loose-fitting trousers decorated with floral patterns that end below the knee, basic brown sandals, and he has a large red sash belt tied around his waist, holding his massive sabre named Gryphon on his right side.

Personality

Shanks is defined by a distinct duality. He is an exceptionally laid-back, festive pacifist who transforms into a terrifyingly ruthless force whenever his friends are threatened. Unlike most chaotic or tyrannical Emperors of the Sea, Shanks values freedom, fun, and maintaining geopolitical peace over territory or personal conquest.

Shanks prefers traveling the world slowly with his crew while throwing massive, alcohol-fueled celebrations. He willingly laughs off personal insults, humiliation, and physical disrespect, famously allowing a low-level bandit to dump alcohol on him without retaliating. He also enjoys lighthearted mockery, a trait heavily showcased during his interactions with a young Monkey D. Luffy.

While he ignores personal insults, he fiercely retaliates if anyone harms his crew, allies, or friends. When pushed into a conflict, his goofy demeanor vanishes instantly, replacing it with a calculated, overwhelming seriousness. Shanks commands total authority through his unparalleled Conqueror's Haki, which can physically damage ships and render experienced warriors unconscious.

Shanks despises needless violence and actively works to prevent global chaos. He uses his formidable political leverage and reputation to stop wars, notably forcing a ceasefire at Marineford after the execution of Ace. If personal ideologies clash heavily, he believes it is best for individuals to part ways rather than fight

Background

Shanks is a pivotal character in One Piece whose origins connect the highest tiers of nobility to the freest pirates in the world. Born into the elite Figarland Family of World Nobles (Celestial Dragons), he was found as an infant inside a treasure chest stolen from God Valley and raised as a pirate apprentice, eventually becoming one of the Four Emperors.

Shanks is the son of Saint Figarland Garling, the supreme leader of the Holy Knights and most recent addition to the Five Elder Stars. He has an identical twin brother named Shamrock. 38 years ago, a massive battle occurred at God Valley involving the Rocks Pirates, the Roger Pirates, the Marines, the Holy Knights, Saint Saturn, Saint Imu Nerona, and many others.

Amidst the chaos, Shanks’s mother Magnolia placed the one-year-old infant into a treasure chest to secure his safety. The Roger Pirates unknowingly looted the chest containing baby Shanks, so Captain Gol D. Roger and Silvers Rayleigh decided to adopt and raise him aboard the Oro Jackson. By age nine, he became an official crew apprentice alongside Buggy the Clown.

Roger recognized Shanks's potential and entrusted him with his signature Straw Hat. Following Roger's death, Shanks and Buggy went separate ways after a dispute over their pirate ideals. After the disbandment of Roger's crew, Shanks briefly returned to the Holy Land of Marijoa. Utilizing his Celestial Dragon bloodline, he reunited with his family and joined the Holy Knights as "Saint Shanks". Potentially acting on Roger's final will. Shanks investigated the mysterious ruler Imu and the Gorosei, spending years acting as a double agent.

While disguised inside Marijoa, Shanks secretly aided Fisher Tiger during his historic raid, helping free thousands of enslaved people. Abdicating his noble status, Shanks returned to the sea to form the Red Hair Pirates, recruiting powerful allies like Ben Beckman and Yasopp, though the timeline suggests he had already formed his pirate crew before going undercover in Marijoa.

Shanks gained massive notoriety across the Grand Line through legendary duels with the world's greatest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk. Additionally, during his early years as a captain, Shanks fought Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard), who inflicted the iconic triple scar over Shanks's left eye. Approximately 13 years ago, Shanks raided a World Government ship guarded by CP9 to steal a mythical Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, though at the time it was known as the Gum Gum Fruit.

He docked in the East Blue for a year, where he befriended a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy. After Luffy accidentally ate the Gum Gum fruit, Shanks chose to be on Luffy. Due to his faith in Luffy’s future, Shanks sacrificed his left arm to a Sea King to save Luffy's life. Before leaving, he passed Roger's straw hat down to Luffy, making a promise to meet again once Luffy became a great pirate. Shortly after leaving the East Blue, Shanks captured the giant Prince Loki of Elbaf and officially secured his status as one of the Four Emperors.

Powers and Abilities

"Red-Haired" Shanks, one of the Four Emperors in One Piece and is the world's premier Haki master, though he possesses no Devil Fruit powers. He relies entirely on his unmatched spiritual energy, superhuman physical conditioning, and elite swordsmanship.

Physical Attributes and Weapons

  • Gryphon: Shanks wields a large saber named Gryphon. The blade can withstand blows from the world's strongest entities and is occasionally enveloped in a flaming aura during battle.

  • Superhuman Conditioning: Despite having only one arm, his raw strength allows him to parry dual-handed weapons and giant opponents with ease. He possesses exceptional travel speeds, flashing across battlefields instantaneously to intercept incoming strikes.

  • Elite Swimmer: Free from the curse of a Devil Fruit, he is one of the fastest and most proficient swimmers in the ocean.

Haki

Shanks has achieved the highest known mastery of Supreme King Haki and Observation Haki, allowing him to see a full 10 seconds into the future, while even his Conqueror’s Haki is strong enough to split the sky when clashing against the power of the “Strongest Man in the World”, White Beard.

  • Armament Haki: Creates an armor-like force that strengthens attacks and defenses, allowing armament haki users to harm Devil Fruit users and ignore their powers. Shanks can manifest an invisible armor or highly concentrated hardening layer. He imbues his saber with advanced Armament Haki to safely block attacks capable of disintegrating flesh, such as Admiral Akainu's magma fists, and when hitting another advanced Armament user, the compressed air shockwaves are powerful enough to split the clouds in the sky.

  • Observation Haki: Gives individuals a sixth sense that allows them to perceive and predict their opponent's movements. In its advanced form, they can see moments into the future. Shanks possesses unique, specialized sensory abilities. He can see a full 10 seconds into the future. This allows him to effortlessly map out an opponent's entire complex attack plan before it begins. Shanks uses his dominant aura to mask his presence entirely. This actively disrupts and blocks his opponent's own Observation Haki, leaving them unable to foresee his actions or anticipate his movements.

  • Conqueror's Haki: A rare form of Haki that allows individuals to knock out those with weak wills. With advanced control, conqueror’s Haki users can coat their body with this Haki to further enhance their attacks. Shanks is a highly skilled user of Conqueror’s Haki. He can project a localized, highly targeted blast of Conqueror's Haki over vast distances. He famously paralyzed Navy Admiral Ryokugyu from miles out at sea without affecting nearby civilians. His passive aura is strong enough to cause physical damage to solid structures, like cracking the wood on Whitebeard's flagship. Shanks coats his weapon in Conqueror's Haki to execute devastating offensive techniques. His signature attack, Divine Departure (replicated from the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger), can defeat multiple multi-billion-bounty pirates in a single blow.

Goals and Reputation

While traditional pirates hunt for territory and treasure, Shanks operates on a much higher political and historical level. Shanks chose to "bet his arm on the future generation" when he lost his arm saving Luffy. He then passed Gol D. Roger’s straw hat down to Monkey D. Luffy, functioning as a distant guardian to ensure Luffy grows strong enough to carry out an as yet unknown goal.

Shanks acts as a gatekeeper of the New World. He actively suppresses massive structural conflicts, such as intercepting Kaido or demanding an end to the Marineford War, to keep the world stable until the chosen successor is ready to challenge it. Recognizing the extreme threat of Blackbeard early on, Shanks focuses heavily on tracking his movements, trying to slow down his rise, and warning other global leaders about the devastation Teach can cause.

Uniquely among top-tier pirates, Shanks utilizes his massive influence to shield vast fleets of weak, defenseless pirate crews under his flag, treating his territories like a community rather than an empire. Shanks commands an unparalleled level of respect and fear across all factions of the world, making him a completely unique political anomaly.

His reputation is backed by absolute individual power. He possesses immense mastery over all three types of advanced Haki, capable of projecting Conqueror's Haki to stun Admirals from miles away and wielding Future Sight Observation Haki that surpasses traditional limits.

"Red-Haired" Shanks currently has a bounty of 4,048,900,000 Berries. This makes it the highest active bounty among the remaining Four Emperors of the Sea and the fifth-highest bounty in pirate history. Despite this, both pirates and Marines recognize Shanks as an honorable pacifist who only resorts to violence when his friends or crew are directly threatened. When he demands a ceasefire, even top-ranking Marines like Fleet Admiral Sengoku yield out of respect for his wisdom and might.
