What Are Devil Fruits?

Devil Fruits are mystical, distinctively swirled fruits in the world of the anime and manga series One Piece that grant a single eater a unique, permanent superpower in exchange for the inability to swim.

Rules and Characteristics of Devil Fruits

One User Per Devil Fruit

Typically, only one person can possess a specific Devil Fruit's power at a time. If the current user dies, the power is "reborn" into another normal fruit somewhere in the world, turning that normal fruit into the Devil Fruit. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, notably the Devil Fruit powers possessed by the Seraphim and the artificial Devil Fruit Kouzuki Momonosuke ate which mimics the powers of Kaidou’s Devil Fruit near-perfectly, with the key ‘problem’ being that Momonosuke’s power turns him into a pink dragon instead of a standard dragon color.

Terrible Taste

Devil Fruits are famously described as tasting incredibly bad, so much so that many struggle to swallow even one bite.

A Single Bite is All It Takes

A person only needs to take one bite to gain the fruit's power. The fruit then becomes a normal, powerless piece of fruit. Though, it should be noted that if two or more people takes bites of the same Devil Fruit, then the person who ate more will gain the power of the Devil Fruit, while nothing happens to the other individuals beyond having to deal with the terrible taste.

No Duplicates

With the exception of the artificial Devil Fruit Dr. Vegapunk created, there are no two Devil Fruits with the exact same power existing at the same time. Though, there are many Devil Fruits with similar powers or even powers that are essentially the same besides their difference in potential, such as the Kilo Kilo Fruit and Ton Ton Fruit.

Weakness to Water and an Inability to Swim

The biggest drawback is that the user permanently loses their ability to swim. They become completely immobile if submerged in still water and are also weakened by Seastone, a mineral that emits the same energy as the sea.

One Fruit Per Person

Anyone can consume a Devil Fruit. Dr. Vegapunk has even demonstrated that inanimate objects can be made to consume Devil Fruits. However, after consuming one Devil Fruit, if the individual attempts to eat a second Devil Fruit they will die. The only known exception to this rule is Marshall D. Teech who currently has two Devil Fruits for as of yet unknown reasons.

Types of Devil Fruits

Devil Fruits are categorized into three main types based on the powers they grant:

Paramecia

This is the most common and varied type, granting the user a superhuman ability that isn't elemental or an animal transformation.

Examples: Trafalgar Law's Devil Fruit, the Op-Op Fruit (Ope Ope no Mi), grants him the ability to manipulate and modify anything and anyone within a spherical "Room" as if he were a surgeon, while Nico Robin's Hana Hana no Mi lets her sprout duplicate body parts.

Zoan

This type gives the user the ability to transform into an animal. They can assume three forms: their original form, a full animal form, and a human-animal hybrid form.

Subtypes:

  • Ancient Zoan: Allows transformation into extinct creatures like dinosaurs.

  • Mythical Zoan: It allows transformation into mythological creatures and grants additional special powers, such as Marco the Phoenix's regeneration abilities.

  • Artificial Zoan: It is also possible to create artificial Zoan Devil Fruits called SMILE fruits, though with a high failure rate and incredibly negative side effects.

Logia

This is the rarest of the three types, allowing the user to create, control, and transform their body into a natural element, making them intangible.

Examples: Mera Mera no Mi: Grants the power of fire, Goro Goro no Mi: Grants the power of lightning, Yami Yami no Mi: An exceptional Logia fruit that gives the user the unique ability to nullify other Devil Fruit powers.

Devil Fruit Awakenings

An Awakened Devil Fruit is a phenomenon in the world of One Piece where a user unlocks the full potential of their Devil Fruit ability, gaining dramatically increased power and new techniques. The effects of an awakening vary depending on the type of Devil Fruit. The process is extremely rare and can only be achieved by a user who has mastered their power to an incredible degree.

Requirements for Awakening

While the precise method is unknown, a Devil Fruit awakening generally requires a combination of high-level mastery and mental or emotional factors.

  • Mastery: Repeated, extensive usage of the Devil Fruit's abilities for many years seems to be a prerequisite. The user's mind and body must fully adapt to the power.

  • Intense Situations: For Zoan fruits, a user enduring repeated near-death experiences followed by recovery is theorized to trigger the awakening.

  • Mental Alignment: Another theory suggests that the user's resolve and personality must align with the spirit of their Devil Fruit for an awakening to occur.

Effects of Awakening by Devil Fruit Type

Paramecia

For most Paramecia users, awakening allows them to extend their power to affect their surrounding environment.

  • Donquixote Doflamingo (String-String Fruit): Gained the ability to turn inorganic objects like buildings and the ground into strings that he could manipulate.

  • Charlotte Katakuri (Mochi-Mochi Fruit): Was able to transform the area around him into mochi.

  • Eustass Kid (Magnet-Magnet Fruit): Became able to apply magnetism to a living target directly, bypassing the need to magnetize their weapons first.

  • Trafalgar Law (Op-Op Fruit): Could create "ROOMs" directly on his targets or sword, allowing him to bypass their defenses from the inside.

Zoan

Zoan awakenings significantly boost the user's physical attributes, including strength, speed, durability, and recovery rate. It also grants them a distinct visual feature. However, Mythical Zoan awakenings may add additional benefits, such as those Luffy experiences in his Nika form.

  • Jailer Beasts of Impel Down: These awakened Zoan users were permanently stuck in their hybrid forms, granting them monstrous endurance and regenerative abilities.

  • Rob Lucci and Kaku: As members of the CP0, their awakened animal forms gave them a special "hagoromo" or cloud scarf that floats around their necks.

  • Monkey D. Luffy (Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika): In his Gear 5 state, Luffy can turn his surroundings into rubber and imbue living things with rubber-like properties. It gives him more freedom to manipulate his own body and fights with a cartoonish style.

Logia

The exact nature of a Logia awakening remains largely unconfirmed in the series. However, it is theorized that it allows users to permanently alter the weather and landscape of their surrounding environment.

  • Former Admirals Akainu and Aokiji: Their epic battle on Punk Hazard permanently turned one half of the island into an inferno and the other into a frozen wasteland. This is considered the strongest evidence of a Logia awakening.
