Leorio Paradinight is a main character in the manga and anime series Hunter x Hunter. A rookie Hunter, he is known for his loud, hot-headed personality, but is ultimately a compassionate and dedicated friend. Compared to the exceptional talents of his friends, Leorio is portrayed as more normal and relatable. He is refreshingly honest and speaks his mind, often providing a grounded perspective amidst the extraordinary feats of others. He is currently a medical student and a member of the Zodiacs, a group of the Hunter Association's most elite members.

Appearance
Leorio is a tall, muscular young man who has a mature, older-looking appearance despite being a teenager at the start of the series. He is typically seen wearing a dark blue suit with tea-shade sunglasses. His sophisticated, mature appearance is often a running gag in the series, as characters like Killua mistake him for an older man.
Personality
While he often appears greedy and impulsive, Leorio is fiercely loyal to his friends—Gon, Kurapika, and Killua—and is often considered the "big brother" of the group. He is undoubtedly a hot-headed yet empathetic and loyal character who acts as the "everyman" of the four main characters. He has been described as having a "warm and gentle" heartbeat and a kind nature that makes him better suited to be a doctor than a Hunter.
While his initial declaration that he is only interested in money makes him seem shallow, it is actually a practical means to a selfless end. He sees becoming a wealthy Hunter as the most direct path to paying for medical school and funding his philanthropic medical career.
Background
Leorio Paradinight's backstory is driven by the tragic loss of a close childhood friend, who died from a curable illness because their family could not afford the necessary medical care. This event profoundly affected Leorio, inspiring him to become a doctor who would treat patients for free.
He decided to become a Hunter to accumulate the immense wealth needed to pay for his medical school education and cover the treatment costs for those who could not afford it. When first introduced in the Hunter Exam, Leorio appears materialistic and obsessed with money, which initially creates tension between him and Kurapika. His true, selfless intentions are only revealed later.
Though he is brash and hot-headed, especially when his friends are in danger, Leorio is a fiercely loyal and trustworthy ally. He serves as a reliable, protective "big brother" to Gon, Killua, and Kurapika. After a surprisingly popular run for the position of Chairman, Leorio joined the Zodiacs, the highest-ranking body of the Hunter Association.
Leorio initially agreed to join the Zodiacs on the condition that Kurapika be offered the vacant "Rat" position. Leorio hoped this would give his self-isolating friend a way to engage with the world and protect him from his destructive path of revenge. Leorio then took on the title "Boar" and was assigned to the Science Division for the expedition to the Dark Continent.
Powers and Abilities
Leorio Paradinight is a perceptive Nen user with an interesting Emission ability, but his true strength lies in his exceptional physical attributes and his potential to apply Nen for medical purposes. Even before learning Nen, Leorio possessed superhuman physical traits honed through training and sheer determination.
Superhuman Characteristics and Medical Skills
Enhanced Strength: He was able to open two of the Testing Gates at the Zoldyck estate, which weigh 8 tons, a feat neither Gon nor Kurapika could accomplish at the time.
Advanced Stamina: Leorio's stamina was proven during the first phase of the Hunter Exam, where he ran over 80 kilometers across various terrains.
Medical Knowledge: As a medical student, Leorio possesses a high degree of medical expertise and first-aid skills, which he uses to great effect.
Keen Senses: After learning Nen, Leorio developed some preternatural sensory skills, which allowed him to perceive subtle auras and changes in the atmosphere.
Nen Affinity and Abilities
Nen (念) is a fundamental power system that allows individuals to control their life energy, known as aura. By manipulating their aura, Nen users can create unique supernatural abilities called Hatsu, enhancing their physical capabilities or creating complex, personal powers.
Nen Affinity: Leorio is listed by series author, Yoshihiro Togashi, as an Emitter with a leaning toward the Enhancer affinity. An Emitter's natural skill is to project their aura over long distances. This perfectly aligns with Leorio's known "Remote Punch" ability, where he emits a long-range fist of aura by punching a surface.
Remote Punch: After punching a surface, Leorio can emit his aura to create a wormhole-like circle at a remote location, from which a fist of aura emerges to strike his target. During the 13th Hunter Chairman Election, he famously used this to punch Ging Freecss.
Nen Ultrasound: Ging Freecss noted that Leorio was developing an ability to use his Nen like an ultrasound machine. He can send aura pulses into a body to detect internal abnormalities like tumors or blood clots. This suggests his Nen could potentially be used for medical healing.
Goals and Reputation
Leorio’s original motivation for becoming a Hunter was to earn enough money to attend medical school. This dream came from the grief of losing a childhood friend to a treatable disease because he couldn't afford the surgery. He became the Zodiac "Boar" after the Chairman Election arc, taking the place of Ging Freecss. He is now part of the medical team for the Dark Continent expedition aboard the Black Whale.
Leorio is currently officially using his medical knowledge in his role as a Hunter. He is seen working in the medical facility on Tier 3 of the Black Whale, the ship heading toward the continent. Leorio is specifically studying under Cheadle, a recognized Disease Hunter, to use his Nen abilities for medical purposes. While his involvement in the ongoing Succession Contest arc has been limited, his elevated position and continued development suggest he will play a more crucial role in the near future.
