Call of the Night

Updated: 3 days ago

Call of the Night (Japanese: Yofukashi no Uta) is a popular supernatural romance manga and anime series created by Kotoyama. The story follows Kou Yamori, an insomniac 14-year-old middle school student who sneaks out at night to escape his boring daily life. During one of his night walks, he meets Nazuna Nanakusa, a quirky and flirtatious vampire. Kou decides he wants to become a vampire too, but there is a major catch: a human can only be turned if they fall in love with the vampire who bites them. The series chronicles their developing relationship, the secrets of the supernatural world, and the freedom of the city after dark.

Core Premise

The core premise of Call of the Night revolves around an insomniac human boy who must force himself to fall in love with a vampire in order to become one himself. Kou Yamori is a 14-year-old middle school student struggling with depression, societal expectations, and an inability to understand the concept of love.

Dissatisfied with mundane daily routines, he stops attending school and begins sneaking out to wander the lonely city streets at night. He meets Nazuna Nanakusa, a quirky, eccentric vampire who introduces him to the freedom and thrills of nocturnal life, though her initial intention is to steal some blood while he sleeps.

Unbeknownst to Nazuna, Kou is only pretending to sleep when she first bites him. Startled by this unexpected moment, Kou immediately sits up and questions her about it. When Nazuna bites Kou to drink his blood, he assumes he will transform into a vampire. However, Nazuna reveals a unique rule in the story's lore: a human can only turn into a vampire if their blood is sucked by a vampire they have genuinely fallen in love with.

Because Kou is completely fascinated by the nightlife and views vampirism as the ultimate escape from his boring reality, he strikes a deal with Nazuna. He will allow her to feed on his unusually tasty blood if she helps him try to fall in love with her. This creates a unique dynamic where a boy who does not understand romance is actively trying to experience true love for a supernatural, yet emotionally awkward, girl.

Key Themes

The key themes of Call of the Night center around the subversion of traditional romance, the psychological freedom of the night, and the complexity of adolescent identity. The story uses vampirism as a metaphorical lens to explore what it means to truly connect with others.

  • The Night as a Sanctuary and Escape: For the protagonist, Kou Yamori, the daytime represents rigid societal expectations, school pressures, and the exhausting routine of a "normal" life.

  • Insomnia as Dissatisfaction: Nazuna points out that people experience insomnia because they are unsatisfied with how they spent their day. They stay awake to release their inhibitions.

  • Nocturnal Freedom: The night provides a quiet, empty landscape where societal rules disappear. It becomes a sanctuary for social outcasts, eccentric free spirits, and those seeking autonomy.

  • Authenticity: Away from the judgment of daytime society, interactions under the cover of darkness feel more intense, honest, and emotionally significant.

  • The Nature of Love and Intimacy: Unlike typical romance stories where characters casually date or fall into relationships, Call of the Night treats love as a structured, high-stakes objective.

  • Love as a Condition: To become a vampire, Kou cannot just get bitten, he must genuinely fall in love with the vampire biting him.

  • The "Project" of Romance: Because Kou lacks a natural understanding of romance, he treats falling in love like a project or a goal. This explores the psychological realization that true emotional intimacy cannot be forced or manufactured.

  • Sensuality over Explicit Fan Service: The act of blood-sucking is heavily coded as an intimate, sensual surrogate for sex. The series treats these physical boundaries as a bridge to exploring emotional vulnerability.

  • Vampirism as a Coming-of-Age Ritual: The supernatural elements of the series are grounded in the psychological transitions from childhood to maturity.

  • The Search for Meaning: Kou's initial desire to become a vampire is driven by an illusion that a supernatural life will automatically give him the purpose his human life lacks.

  • Fear of the Future: At first glance, vampirism represents an absolute halt to normal human progression, stopping aging, avoiding traditional responsibilities, and remaining dynamic but static. Kou’s journey forces him to realize that true maturity requires navigating reality rather than escaping it entirely.

  • Loneliness vs. Genuine Connection: The cast is predominantly composed of characters who struggle to fit into conventional social boxes. Both Kou (an awkward, school-avoidant teenager) and Nazuna (an emotionally guarded vampire who avoids long-term attachments) start from positions of deep isolation. Their "convenient" physical relationship slowly evolves into real emotional support. The narrative emphasizes that finding even one person who understands your quirks can change the trajectory of an otherwise bleak life.
