Tsuyu Asui, also known as the Rainy Season Hero: Froppy, is a fictional character and a major supporting character in the popular anime and manga series My Hero Academia. She is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, training to become a Pro Hero.

Appearance
Tsuyu Asui is short, standing at 150 cm (4'11") with a relatively slender build and notably large hands. Her most prominent features are her large, oval-shaped eyes with big, black irises and pronounced lower eyelashes. She has a wide mouth that dips down slightly in the middle, resembling that of a common frog.
She has long, dark sea-green hair that reaches her hips and is tied at the bottom in a large, bow-like knot. Two armpit-length clumps of hair frame her face, along with shorter bangs between her eyes. She often holds herself in a way that is connotative of a frog and has a habit of placing a finger against her mouth when speaking or pondering. She also tends to say "ribbit" at the end of her sentences.
While at school, Tsuyu wears the standard U.A. High school uniform, which includes a gray blazer over a white collared shirt, dark green skirt, and black socks and brown shoes. Her superhero outfit is a bright green full-body suit designed to resemble a frog's markings with black stripes and yellow trim.
The outfit features two utility belts, one above her breasts and one on her waist, decorated with green dots, beige gloves with large wrist guards and green buckles, and black, thigh-high flippers that resemble frog legs. Tsuyu also wears goggles with dark green lenses and a headband matching the color of her gloves. Her winter hero costume is a slight variation designed with insulation and a neck ring that regulates her body temperature to prevent hibernation in cold weather. The markings on this suit are also slightly different, starting just below her chest.
Personality
Asui is a calm, rational, and straightforward character who serves as an emotional "pillar of support" for her classmates. She rarely gets emotional and maintains focus during stressful and dangerous situations, showing excellent judgment and reliability.
Though, Tsuyu is also brutally honest, always speaking her mind and saying what she thinks about others, which can sometimes come across as unintentionally harsh or blunt. Due to taking care of her younger siblings from a young age, she is highly mature and responsible. She is deeply caring, selfless, and kindhearted toward her friends.
Tsuyu is very observant and analytical, capable of picking up on subtle details, such as the similarities between Izuku Midoriya and All Might's Quirks. She prefers her friends to call her by her first name, "Tsu" (or "Tsu-chan"), which is a sign of affection and the value she places on close relationships.
Background
Tsuyu Asui’s story focuses on her diligent nature, her unique appearance which made it difficult to make friends in middle school, and her close-knit family life. Tsuyu is the eldest of three children (siblings Samidare and Satsuki) in a family where both parents had "Frog-Form" Quirks and were often working. This required her to assume the role of caretaker from a young age, balancing household duties with her schoolwork and hero studies.
Tsuyu’s busy schedule and unique appearance led to a lonely middle school experience. Other students had difficulty reading her vacant expression, which sometimes crept them out. However, during this time, a lonely student named Habuko Mongoose, who also had trouble making friends due to her snake-like appearance and paralyzing Quirk, began to follow Tsuyu. Tsuyu, understanding Habuko's loneliness, initiated a friendship with her. They remained in contact even after going to different high schools, and this experience motivated Tsuyu to make more friends at U.A. High School.
Her background as a primary caregiver instilled in her strong morals, a calm and level-headed demeanor, and a dependable nature. Tsuyu's backstory is a positive one, suggesting that not all heroes need a tragic past to be motivated. She wanted to use her Quirk to help people in a complicated world and decided to attend U.A. to learn how to do so effectively.
Powers and Abilities
Tsuyu Asui's primary powers stem from her Frog Quirk, which grants her a wide range of frog-like abilities. Beyond her Quirk, she possesses significant non-quirk abilities, primarily characterized by her high intelligence, observational skills, and calm demeanor under pressure.
Characteristics and Tactical Skills
Keen Intellect and Observation: Asui is highly intelligent, scoring 6th place in her class's mid-term exams. She is very analytical and observant, being the first to deduce the similarities between Izuku Midoriya's Quirk and All Might's.
Level-Headedness: She is known for her calm, collected, and pragmatic demeanor, capable of remaining focused and making sound judgments even under extreme pressure, making her a dependable ally. Recovery Girl even describes her as a "perfect pillar of emotional support".
Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: She is an experienced and skilled fighter who effectively integrates her agility and frog-like physiology into her fighting style, using acrobatics and powerful kicks.
Enhanced Stamina: Through intense training, she has developed impressive stamina, capable of fighting continuously for extended periods.
Leadership/Caretaking Skills: Due to having to care for her two younger siblings from a young age, Tsuyu developed into a mature and responsible individual with leadership qualities.
Quirk Powers and Fighting Styles
In the world of My Hero Academia, a Quirk is a special, superhuman ability unique to an individual, with about 80% of the population possessing one. Quirks are genetic and manifest by the age of four, and are divided into three main categories: Emitter, which allows a user to emit or control something (like fire or electricity); Transformation, which temporarily alters the user's body; and Mutant, which causes a permanent physical anomaly that often aids in their abilities
Quirk Type: Tsuyu Asui's Quirk type is Mutant, which grants her the physical characteristics and abilities of a frog. Her Quirk is classified as Mutant because it permanently altered her body to have frog-like features.
Frog: Tsuyu's Quirk provides a versatile set of powers, making her a highly effective hero, particularly in aquatic environments. Her "Frog" Quirk allows her to perform a wide range of frog-related actions like leaping long distances, sticking to walls, swimming faster than human athletes, and extending her 20-meter-long tongue with great strength.
Enhanced Jumping/Leg Strength: Tsuyu can jump incredibly long distances and to extreme heights, allowing for rapid movement and powerful kicks.
Enhanced Swimming: She excels in aquatic environments, able to swim much faster than an average human and operate effectively underwater without losing agility.
Wall Clinging: She can stick to and climb a variety of surfaces, including walls and tightropes.
Extendable Tongue: Her most used ability, she can extend her strong, prehensile tongue up to a maximum of 20 meters (about 63 feet). She uses it to bind opponents, lift people, retrieve objects, or swing around.
Camouflage: She can change the color and pattern of her skin to blend in with her surroundings, masking her presence for stealth or surprise attacks.
Stomach Storage/Ejection: Tsuyu can store large objects in her stomach and later regurgitate them. This process is effective for transport but leaves her feeling nauseated.
Mucus Secretion: She can secrete a mucus with different effects, including:
Paralysis: A substance that can induce paralysis on contact, the effectiveness of which increased with her training.
Itch Inducement: A weaker form of the toxin that causes stinging or itching on contact.
Scent Masking: Mucus that can be used to mask her or her allies' scents from foes with enhanced senses.
Goals and Reputation
While the series doesn't provide a dramatic, specific personal goal for Tsuyu (like Uraraka needing money for her parents, or Midoriya wanting to be the greatest hero), her motivations are deeply rooted in responsibility and a desire to help. While not explicitly stated, it has been suggested in fan discussions and implied in the series that she aims to be a rescue hero who helps those in need. Her versatile, frog-based Quirk is perfectly suited for a wide variety of rescue operations.
Tsuyu has strong morals and principles. She strongly believes that heroes must follow the law and act responsibly, famously opposing the plan to illegally rescue Bakugo, stating that acting on emotions and breaking the law would make them no different from villains. She grew up caring for her two younger siblings, requiring her to become highly mature and capable of balancing her schoolwork and home responsibilities. This experience translates into her goal of being a competent and dependable individual in all aspects of her life.
Tsuyu’s most prominent trait is her unflappable nature. She can remain levelheaded and focused in dangerous and stressful situations, which helps keep her teammates at ease. She is an excellent student with no clear weaknesses and is one of the more observant members of Class 1-A.
Tsuyu is known for speaking her mind and expressing exactly what she thinks, which can sometimes come across as blunt. However, this honesty is part of her genuine and transparent personality. Both in-universe and among fans, she is seen as an emotional anchor and support system for her friends. Tsuyu is a very popular character in the fandom due to her unique design, personality, and reliable nature, often being considered a fan-favorite "best girl" despite some critiques that she lacks deep character development compared to other main characters.
