Who Is Eijiro Kirishima?

Eijiro Kirishima is a major supporting character in the popular anime and manga series My Hero Academia. He is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School, training to become a Pro Hero. He is a boisterous, chivalrous, and loyal hero-in-training with the Hardening quirk, allowing him to turn his skin into a durable, sharp rock-like substance.

Appearance

Eijiro Kirishima is a muscular young man of average height (170 cm or 5'7") known for his striking, bright red hair. While his current spiky look is iconic, his natural hair color is actually black.

He has dyed bright red hair, styled into sharp, vertical spikes using gel. Two specific tufts are shaped to resemble small horns on his forehead. His red eyes slant slightly inward and his teeth are notably sharp and jagged, similar to shark teeth. Kirishima also has a small, thin scar located just above his right eye.

His hero outfit, inspired by his idol Crimson Riot, is designed to accommodate his "Hardening" quirk. He typically leaves his chest bare, wearing two dark red, gear-shaped shoulder pads. He also wears black sleeves on his arms to protect civilians from his hardened skin. On his lower body he wears baggy black pants and a dark red sash with an "R" in the centre, which joins to a red belt.

Kirishima also has a black, wired jaw guard that wraps around his head, extending from his hairline to his jaw and dark red boots, often paired with thick rings around his calves. When attending U.A. High School, Eijiro wears the standard school uniform: a grey blazer over a white shirt and dark green pants. He distinguishes his look by wearing dark red trainers instead of the traditional brown dress shoes.

Personality

Eijiro Kirishima is defined by his boisterous, outgoing, and noble nature, centered around a personal code of "manliness". He is a highly supportive and empathetic individual, often serving as the emotional bridge within Class 1-A.

Kirishima frequently uses the terms "manly" and "unmanly" to judge actions. To him, manliness is about being brave, honest, and selfless. He deeply admires those who show noble or determined attitudes. He is one of the most personable students in his class, famously becoming one of the few people who can truly get along with the hot-tempered Katsuki Bakugo.

Kirishima is a "ride-or-die" friend. This was most notably seen when he spearheaded the plan to rescue Bakugo from the League of Villains, refusing to stand by while his friend was in danger. He values fair play and respect. Even after a hard-fought battle, such as his tie-breaker match against Tetsutetsu, he is quick to offer a handshake in good sport.

Despite his confident exterior, Kirishima’s personality is a deliberate reinvention. In middle school, Kirishima was timid and lacked self-esteem. He felt "dull" compared to his peers and once froze in fear during a crisis, a moment of "cowardice" that haunted him. He modeled his current persona and hero name after the retro hero Crimson Riot. Learning that even his idol felt fear but chose to act anyway gave Kirishima the resolve to transform himself.

Background

Kirishima’s Hardening Quirk first manifested when he was three years old. While rubbing his eye in the middle of the night, his hand hardened, causing him to accidentally cut himself. This left the distinct scar on his right eye and initially made him dislike his own power for being "boring" and hurtful.

Growing up, he had straight black hair and felt plain compared to his peers. He viewed his quirk as mediocre and lacked the "instinct" to act heroically that he saw in others. The defining moment of his backstory occurred in junior high. A large, terrifying villain (later revealed as Gigantomachia) approached Kirishima's classmates, including Mina Ashido, asking for directions. While Kirishima wanted to help, he was paralyzed by fear and unable to move.

In contrast, Mina, who was then just a popular, outgoing girl, stepped in and saved her friends by tricking the villain into leaving. This event crushed Kirishima's confidence, making him feel that he wasn't "manly" enough to be a hero. Near despair, Kirishima rediscovered an old interview with his idol, the hero Crimson Riot. The hero admitted that even he felt fear, but that a "manly heart" is about overcoming that fear to protect others.

Inspired, Kirishima resolved to change himself entirely. He trained relentlessly to strengthen his Quirk, dyed his hair bright red, and styled it into sharp spikes to symbolize his new, outgoing, and brave persona as Red Riot. He entered U.A. with the goal of never being paralyzed by fear again, eventually forming a close bond with Katsuki Bakugo, whom he respected for his unwavering confidence.

Powers and Abilities

Eijiro Kirishima, the "Sturdy Hero: Red Riot", possesses the Quirk Hardening. This ability allows him to harden and sharpen any part of his body at will, making his skin as tough as stone or steel. In addition to this powerful Quirk, his effectiveness as the hero Red Riot relies heavily on several non-Quirk-related attributes, specifically his indomitable will and enhanced natural durability.

Characteristics and Skills

  • Indomitable Will & Chivalry: Kirishima’s most defining non-Quirk trait is his "die-hard chivalry". This mental fortitude allows him to push past paralyzing fear—a struggle he has faced since middle school—to recklessly rush into danger to protect others. His ultimate form, Unbreakable, is fueled directly by his sheer willpower.

  • Enhanced Natural Durability: Even without activating his Quirk, Kirishima possesses above-average physical durability. During the U.A. Sports Festival, Katsuki Bakugo noted that Kirishima’s ability to withstand a barrage of point-blank explosions was due to more than just his hardened skin, proving his natural body is exceptionally tough.

  • Hand-to-Hand Combat Proficiency: Due to the nature of his defensive Quirk, Kirishima has trained extensively in close-quarters combat. He uses a straightforward, brawling fighting style that relies on taking hits to deliver powerful counterattacks.

  • Tactical Foresight: Despite being labeled as "not very strategic" by some peers, he has demonstrated practical tactical thinking, such as bringing night vision goggles for the Bakugo rescue mission and correctly predicting classmates' performances based on their mobility.

  • High Cooperativeness: Kirishima is one of the most personable students in Class 1-A, holding a 4/5 "Cooperativeness" rating. His ability to befriend almost anyone—most notably the aggressive Katsuki Bakugo—makes him a vital bridge for teamwork within his class.

Quirk Powers and Fighting Styles

In the world of My Hero Academia, a Quirk is a special, superhuman ability unique to an individual, with about 80% of the population possessing one. Quirks are genetic and manifest by the age of four, and are divided into three main categories: Emitter, which allows a user to emit or control something (like fire or electricity); Transformation, which temporarily alters the user's body; and Mutant, which causes a permanent physical anomaly that often aids in their abilities

  • Quirk Type: Kirishima's Quirk is Hardening. It allows him to harden and sharpen any or all parts of his body at will, making his flesh as tough as stone and giving it a jagged, rock-like appearance. Hardening is a Transformation-Type Quirk. This classification means his ability allows him to temporarily undergo a physical change to his body.

  • Hardening: Kirishima, known as the Sturdy Hero: Red Riot, possesses a Quirk that transforms his body into a living shield and a crushing weapon. Specifically, Hardening lets him stiffen and sharpen his skin and muscles at will, making them as tough and jagged as rock.

    • Red Riot Unbreakable: Kirishima's most powerful state, Red Riot Unbreakable, pushes his hardening to its absolute maximum limit. He takes on a monstrous, jagged appearance where even his eyes are hardened. In this state, he is practically invulnerable to physical attacks and gains a massive boost in offensive power. However, it is extremely taxing and can only be maintained for roughly 30 to 40 seconds.

    • Red Counter: A defensive-offensive move where he tanks a close-range hit with his hardened skin and immediately counters with a straight punch.

    • Red Gauntlet: A high-speed dash toward an opponent followed by a powerful gut-punch. This move deals devastating damage when performed in his "Unbreakable" form.

    • Red Hook: A forceful right hook delivered with a fully hardened fist.

Goals and Reputation

Kirishima's primary goal in My Hero Academia is to become a selfless, chivalrous Pro Hero who can protect others without ever feeling the regret of inaction again. Heavily inspired by his idol, the retro hero Crimson Riot, Kirishima strives to embody a "manly" spirit. To him, manliness is defined by bravery, chivalry, and the resolve to do the right thing even when it's terrifying.

In middle school, Kirishima felt paralyzed by fear during a villain encounter involving Mina Ashido. His goal at U.A. High is to reinvent himself so that he never freezes in the face of danger again.

He initially viewed his "Hardening" quirk as "unflashy" or weak compared to his peers. His goal is to "become an unbreakable wall" by pushing his physical and mental limits to the maximum, leading to his ultimate move, "Red Riot Unbreakable". Rather than seeking the spotlight, he aims to be a hero who stands at the front lines to take hits for his allies and civilians, serving as an indestructible defense.

In the world of My Hero Academia, Kirishima is respected by pro heroes, mentors, and peers alike for his chivalrous spirit and defensive prowess. He received the 7th highest number of nominations (68 total) from Pro Heroes following the U.A. Sports Festival, indicating significant professional interest in his potential.

He is one of the few individuals who has earned the genuine respect of Katsuki Bakugo, serving as a "bridge" character that ties the competitive Class 1-A together. Figures like All Might and Fat Gum have specifically praised his "noble heroic spirit" and his willingness to act as a human shield for others. His persona is built on "manliness," which he defines through courage and selflessness. While some find his obsession with this concept humorous, it has made him a symbol of reliability.

Among the fanbase, Kirishima is a consistent fan-favourite, often ranking higher than several main characters in global popularity polls. He has frequently placed in the Top 5, reaching as high as 4th place in multiple official Japanese popularity polls, trailing only the "main trio" of Bakugo, Midoriya, and Todoroki. Fans deeply connect with his backstory of self-doubt and fear.

Unlike protagonists who act on instinct, Kirishima's journey of choosing to be brave despite his internal insecurities makes him one of the most humanized characters in the series. He is a staple in the creative community, inspiring extensive fan art, cosplay, and headcanons that celebrate his loyalty and positive masculinity. Fans often cite his healthy friendships, particularly his unwavering support for Bakugo, as a highlight of his character development, viewing him as the "ultimate support character".
