Shoto Todoroki is a main protagonist in My Hero Academia, a UA High student training to be a Pro Hero, known for his distinctive half-red, half-white hair and scar. He is the youngest son of Endeavor and a key figure in the series, becoming one of the top heroes.

Appearance
Shoto Todoroki is a moderately tall and well-built young man known for his very distinctive physical features, a direct result of his powerful "Half-Cold Half-Hot" Quirk. His hair is short and evenly split down the middle: white on his right side and crimson red on his left and he possesses a muscular physique developed through intense training.
He has heterochromia, meaning his eyes are different colors: his right eye is a brownish-dark gray, and his left eye is a striking turquoise. A prominent, dull red burn scar covers the left side of his face, reaching from his hairline to halfway down his cheek, an injury he sustained in childhood.
During school, he wears the standard U.A. High male uniform. His hero costumes vary over the series, typically featuring dark blue combat gear designed to regulate his body temperature and manage his Quirk's output.
Personality
Shoto Todoroki’s personality is defined by a significant transition from a cold, emotionally detached loner to a compassionate and socially developing hero. At the start of the series, Shoto is characterized by a distant and unemotional demeanor. He originally preferred to keep to himself, avoiding friendships or casual socializing with his classmates.
His personality was heavily shaped by his abusive upbringing under his father, Endeavor. He initially refused to use his fire powers as a form of rebellion against his father's legacy. Shoto is also remarkably straightforward and can come across as arrogant or rude because he prioritizes efficiency and logic over social niceties.
Following his battle with Izuku Midoriya at the U.A. Sports Festival, Shoto begins a gradual emotional thaw. He becomes more sociable and begins to value the bonds with his peers, particularly Midoriya, Bakugo, and Yaoyorozu. As he relaxes, Shoto reveals a surprisingly dry and deadpan sense of humor, though he is often still "dense" when it comes to understanding slang or flirting.
Despite his serious exterior, he is fundamentally kind and deeply protective of his friends, often rushing to their aid without hesitation. Though, even in high-pressure combat, he maintains an "indomitable will" and a cool head, rarely losing his temper. Once he sets a goal—whether it is mastering his fire side or forgiving his family—he is incredibly stubborn and focused.
Background
Shoto Todoroki’s backstory is defined by a traumatic upbringing rooted in his father’s obsession with power and a fractured family dynamic. Born from a "Quirk marriage"—a union arranged solely to produce a powerful successor—Shoto was bred to surpass the Number One Hero, All Might.
His father, Enji Todoroki (Endeavor), forced Rei Todoroki into marriage to combine his fire Quirk with her ice Quirk. As the only child of four to perfectly inherit both powers (Half-Cold Half-Hot), Shoto was deemed Endeavor's "masterpiece". Starting at age five, Shoto was subjected to brutal physical training that often pushed him to the point of vomiting. He was isolated from his siblings and forbidden from playing, as his father saw them as "failures" compared to him.
Shoto's mother, Rei, suffered years of domestic abuse at Endeavor's hands. Her mental state deteriorated until she eventually snapped upon seeing Shoto's left side, which reminded her of his father. In a moment of panic and trauma, Rei poured a kettle of boiling water over Shoto’s left eye, causing the permanent scar he bears today. After the incident, Endeavor had Rei committed to a psychiatric hospital, which Shoto blamed entirely on his father.
As a result of this trauma, Shoto entered U.A. High School with a cold, distant personality. He vowed to become the top hero using only his mother's ice power, effectively rejecting his father by refusing to use the fire side he inherited from him. This resolve lasted until his battle with Izuku Midoriya at the U.A. Sports Festival, where he finally realized the power was his own and not his father's.
Powers and Abilities
Shoto Todoroki's sole Quirk is called Half-Cold Half-Hot, which grants him mastery over both ice and fire elements. In addition to this powerful Quirk, he possesses significant non-Quirk abilities developed through rigorous training and combat experience.
Characteristics and Tactical Skills
Keen Intellect and Strategic Prowess: Shoto is highly intelligent and an acute analyst. He consistently scores high academically in Class 1-A and demonstrates excellent tactical thinking, often deducing enemy plans and formulating effective strategies quickly in combat situations.
Enhanced Physical Attributes: Through rigorous training from a young age, Shoto possesses superhuman physical characteristics:
Durability and Stamina: He can withstand powerful, Quirk-enhanced attacks from opponents like Izuku Midoriya and Dabi and continue fighting despite significant injuries or exhaustion.
Agility and Reflexes: Shoto is notably fast and agile, capable of quickly reacting to and dodging swift attacks from skilled opponents like the Hero Killer: Stain and Tenya Iida.
Hand-to-Hand Combat Prowess: Despite his powerful long-range Quirk, Shoto is proficient in close-quarters combat, a necessary skill for a Pro Hero.
Indomitable Will: Shoto possesses an unyielding spirit and mental fortitude, allowing him to push through adversity and psychological trauma, eventually embracing his full power to forge his own heroic path.
Quirk Powers and Fighting Styles
In the world of My Hero Academia, a Quirk is a special, superhuman ability unique to an individual, with about 80% of the population possessing one. Quirks are genetic and manifest by the age of four, and are divided into three main categories: Emitter, which allows a user to emit or control something (like fire or electricity); Transformation, which temporarily alters the user's body; and Mutant, which causes a permanent physical anomaly that often aids in their abilities
Quirk Type: Shoto's Quirk, Half-Cold Half-Hot, is classified as an Emitter-type Quirk. It is unique for its perfectly divided biological nature, stemming from a "Quirk Marriage" between his father's fire-based Quirk and his mother's ice-based Quirk. This means Shoto has the ability to release materials (fire and ice) or alter the environment around him, rather than his Quirk being a permanent part of his physical structure (Mutant-type) or a temporary transformation of his body (Transformation-type)
Half-Cold, Half-Hot: Shoto Todoroki’s Quirk, Half-Cold Half-Hot, is a rare and powerful Emitter-type ability that gives him dual control over ice and fire. His body is perfectly divided: the right side generates freezing temperatures and ice, while the left side generates extreme heat and flames.
Right Side (Cryokinesis): Shoto can drastically lower temperatures to create massive ice constructs, such as glaciers, barriers, and ramps for mobility.
Left Side (Pyrokinesis): Inherited from his father, Endeavor, this side allows him to shoot intense streams and waves of fire. After training, he mastered the Flashfire Fist, compressing his flames into a white-hot point for maximum destruction.
Temperature Regulation: This Quirk's greatest strength is self-regulation. Using only one side causes his body temperature to reach dangerous extremes (frostbite from ice or heatstroke from fire). By alternating or using both sides, he can neutralize these physical drawbacks.
Heaven-Piercing Ice Wall: His most iconic move, where he creates an enormous mountain of ice to instantly immobilize or overwhelm opponents.
Flashfreeze Heatwave: By cooling the air with ice and then rapidly heating it with fire, Shoto creates a devastating super-heated explosion of expanding air.
Phosphor: The pinnacle of his evolution as of 2025. This technique involves circulating both hot and cold blood throughout his entire circulatory system, merging the elements into a "cold fire". It allows him to use both powers simultaneously across his whole body and grants immunity to extreme heat.
Great Glacial Aegir: An ultimate move powered by Phosphor, where Shoto unleashes a massive wave of "cold fire" capable of extinguishing the hottest flames and covering entire battlefields in ice.
Goals and Reputation
Shoto’s motivations evolved significantly throughout his journey at U.A. High School. Originally, Shoto’s primary goal was to reject his father, the hero Endeavor, by refusing to use the fire abilities inherited from him. After his match with Izuku Midoriya, his goal shifted toward becoming a hero on his own terms, defining himself by his own actions rather than his lineage.
A major driving force for Shoto was the desire to save his mother from her trauma and eventually stop his brother, Toya (Dabi), from further destruction. He ultimately aimed to mend the "Hellish Todoroki Family" dynamics without ignoring the past abuse. Inspired by All Might, Shoto aspired to be a hero who puts people at ease just by being present. By 2025, he has achieved his goal of becoming a Pro Hero who treats all citizens with respect and equality.
Shoto is widely regarded as one of the most talented and influential heroes of his generation. Despite his initial cold and aloof demeanor, Shoto earned the deep respect of his classmates through his raw power and eventual social opening. He became one of the "Big Three" of Class 1-A alongside Midoriya and Bakugo.
Even early in his career, he was acknowledged by the Hero Killer: Stain as a "true hero" due to his selfless commitment to saving others during the Hosu incident. Following his graduation from U.A., Shoto has established himself as a hardworking and successful Pro Hero. He is no longer seen merely as "Endeavor's son," but as a hero in his own right.
In the fanbase, he consistently ranks as one of the most popular characters in the franchise, often placing in the top three of global popularity polls. In 2024, he was ranked the third most popular character in the "World Best Hero" global poll.
