Toru Hagakure, also known as the Stealth Hero: Invisible Girl, is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School in the popular anime and manga series My Hero Academia. Hagakure is a cheerful student whose Quirk makes her body permanently invisible, appearing as floating clothes, gloves, and shoes.

Appearance
Toru Hagakure has a physical appearance that remained a mystery for most of the My Hero Academia series due to her Invisibility Quirk. When she is visible (due to her Quirk malfunctioning from light refraction), her features include medium-length, messy, and wavy hair that is multicolored, featuring a mix of turquoise, pink, and yellow strands, bushy eyelashes that match her hair’s color palette, and large, round eyes with distinct teal irises on the outside and yellow on the inside.
Since her invisibility only affects her body, her costumes are designed for maximum stealth. Her standard costume consists of only a pair of light blue gloves with pale pink lines and light brownish-gray lace-up shoes. She is otherwise completely naked to remain fully invisible.
In her winter costume, she wears thicker gloves with dark blue padding and plain knee-high boots, while in the series' epilogue (set eight years after the Final War), she wears a specialized green and yellow suit designed like a bikini. This suit is intended to keep her decent should her Quirk malfunction again.
Toru's face was first partially glimpsed in the manga (Chapter 337) and anime (Season 7) when she refracted Yuga Aoyama's laser. A full reveal occurred later during the Final War when her Quirk "glitched" after she absorbed powerful light, rendering her body outlines and skin color clearly visible to her allies.
Personality
Hagakure is characterized by a vibrant and social personality that often contrasts with her physical lack of visibility. She is consistently cheerful and upbeat, maintaining a positive attitude even in stressful situations, but also loves socializing, shopping, and discussing "girly" topics like fashion and romance. She is often seen participating eagerly in class activities, such as cheerleading during the U.A. Sports Festival.
While Hagakure can be blissfully unaware of her own invisibility—showing embarrassment at the idea of undressing despite being invisible—she is also quite tactical. She uses her Quirk effectively for espionage and surprise attacks. Her room is filled with cute things and plushies, reflecting her youthful and innocent nature. She also enjoys caramel and hidden camera prank shows.
Despite her bubbly exterior, Toru is a dedicated hero-in-training. She played a critical role in identifying the traitor within U.A. High School by using her stealth capabilities to gather vital information. Her cooperativeness is rated as highly as possible (5/5), making her an excellent teammate in battle.
Background
Toru Hagakure, the Stealth Hero: Invisible Girl, has a relatively simple backstory compared to other characters in My Hero Academia. Most of her history is defined by her invisible nature and her time at U.A. High School.
Toru is the only child of her parents, who both possess the same Invisibility quirk. Her Quirk is a Mutant-type, meaning her body is permanently invisible and cannot be "turned off," which defined her entire upbringing. After graduating from junior high, she passed the U.A. Entrance Exam and was assigned to Class 1-A.
Toru played a critical role in the series by being the first to discover the identity of the U.A. traitor, Yuga Aoyama. She overheard a conversation between Yuga and his parents regarding their forced cooperation with All For One.
During the Final War, her invisibility "glitched" after she absorbed light from Yuga’s Navel Laser. This briefly revealed her true appearance: a girl with wavy, mint-green hair and large, round green eyes.
By 2025, eight years after the Final War, Toru has graduated from U.A. and is a professional hero ranked as the No. 39 Hero. Her Quirk awakened further, granting control over light energy. She also starts a hero agency with Tokoyami and Aoyama, and eventually gains the ability to control her invisibility.
Powers and Abilities
Toru Hagakure's primary power is a Mutant-type Quirk called Invisibility, which makes her entire body completely invisible at all times. Her non-quirk abilities include proficiency in stealth, hand-to-hand combat, and teamwork. Her fighting style focuses on swift, unseen punches, leveraging her invisibility for difficult-to-defend-against attacks.
Characteristics and Tactical Skills
Stealth Mastery: Due to her Quirk, Toru excels in stealth operations, ambushes, and espionage. She trained specifically to remain undetected, even from those with enhanced sensory perception like Mezo Shoji.
Hand-to-Hand Combat: She is a skilled close-range combatant, utilizing her invisibility to launch surprise attacks that are difficult for opponents to defend against.
Teamwork and Strategy: Toru understands how to use her unique abilities in conjunction with her classmates' Quirks to maximum effect, as demonstrated during her exams and battles.
Observant Nature: She has shown an observant side, which led her to discover Yuga Aoyama was the U.A. traitor after noticing his unusual behavior.
Quirk Powers and Fighting Styles
In the world of My Hero Academia, a Quirk is a special, superhuman ability unique to an individual, with about 80% of the population possessing one. Quirks are genetic and manifest by the age of four, and are divided into three main categories: Emitter, which allows a user to emit or control something (like fire or electricity); Transformation, which temporarily alters the user's body; and Mutant, which causes a permanent physical anomaly that often aids in their abilities
Quirk Type: Toru Hagakure's quirk is Invisibility (Tōmeika), classified as a Mutant-Type quirk, meaning her body is permanently invisible from birth, though she can manipulate light for effects like blinding flashes (Warp Refraction) and redirecting lasers, acting like a living lens.
Invisibility: Her body is completely and permanently invisible due to a mutation that allows light to pass through her. This invisibility does not extend to her clothing, requiring her to be naked (save for boots and gloves) to be fully undetectable.
Light Manipulation & Refraction: Though her primary trait is being invisible, her power actually stems from the ability to manipulate how light interacts with her body.
Blinding Flashes: She can refract light through her body to create a sudden, intense flash that blinds anyone in the vicinity.
Light Redirection: With advanced training, she can capture and redirect light-based attacks, such as Yuga Aoyama’s "Navel Laser" or powerful energy beams from enemies.
Warp Refraction: Say Cheese!: Toru bends light through her body to create a blinding flash, often used to stun groups of enemies simultaneously.
Warp Refraction: Navel Laser: By coordinating with Yuga Aoyama, she catches his laser and refracts it into multiple beams to attack or blind enemies in multiple directions.
Goals and Reputation
Toru Hagakure’s character arc centers on her development from a background "joke" character to a strategic hero-in-training. Her primary goal is to become a successful Pro Hero despite her physically unassuming Quirk. To achieve this goal, she focuses on mastering stealth and infiltration, recognizing that her invisibility is her greatest tactical advantage.
As the series progresses, she works to expand her abilities beyond passive invisibility, successfully developing "light refraction" techniques to blind or distract opponents. Recognizing she lacks raw power, she aims to compensate with strategic thinking and potentially martial arts training to remain competitive with her more physically powerful classmates.
In universe, Toru Hagakure is widely known for her upbeat, optimistic, and highly social personality. While not a "front-line" powerhouse, she is respected for her ability to provide vital support in hostage or stealth situations, such as her contribution during the final exams. She is also viewed as a meticulous and strategic student, ranking 16th in her class academically.
In the fandom, she was a primary subject of fan theories regarding the identity of the "U.A. Traitor" due to her invisibility and often unexplained presence in key scenes. Many fans view her as a character with high potential that was often underutilized, noting that a truly invisible hero would be nearly impossible to hit if trained in martial arts. Early on, she was often dismissed as a "gag" or "joke" character, but she gained more respect after her face was finally revealed and her combat utility increased in the final arcs.
