Who Is Kyoka Jiro?

Kyoka Jiro is a major supporting character in the popular anime and manga series My Hero Academia. She is a student in Class 1-A at U.A. High School training to become a professional hero. Born to musician parents, she is a multi-instrumentalist (proficient in guitar, bass, and drums) and a talented vocalist. She famously led the Class 1-A band during the U.A. Cultural Festival. Throughout the series, Jiro transitions from a secondary support character to a critical asset in major battles.

Appearance

Kyoka Jiro, also known as the Hearing Hero: Earphone Jack, has a distinct rock-inspired appearance in My Hero Academia. She has dark purple hair styled in a chin-length bob with asymmetrical bangs, triangular, lazy-looking onyx eyes with long lower eyelashes and small pupils. 

Her most prominent feature is her long, flexible, plug-like earlobes that she can control as extra limbs. She also has two small, red tear-drop or chevron-shaped marks just below her eyes. Jiro is slender and petite, standing at just 154 cm (approximately 5'0"). She is often described as having a "cool" or "gothic" aesthetic that reflects her deep passion for rock music.

Jiro’s Hero costume consists of a black leather-style jacket, a peach-colored or pale red shirt with ragged hemlines, black pants, and a plain black choker. She also wears specialized boots equipped with speakers that allow her to fire sound blasts, and amplifiers on her forearms to enhance her heartbeat vibrations. When in her U.A. uniform, unlike many students, she frequently wears a dark vest over her white dress shirt instead of the standard gray blazer. 

Personality

Jiro has a multifaceted personality that balances a cool, "punk-rock" exterior with deep-seated insecurities and a strong sense of loyalty. Jiro is known for her straightforward and often unenthusiastic demeanor. She is quick to offer snarky remarks, particularly to those she finds irritating, such as Denki Kaminari.

Born into a musical family, she has a profound love for rock music and can play several instruments, including the bass and guitar. Initially, she was embarrassed by this hobby, fearing it was "un-heroic," but she eventually embraced it as a way to inspire others. Despite her tough exterior, Jiro suffers from self-confidence issues regarding her appearance. She is notably sensitive about not being as "physically developed" as her female classmates and can become defensive when teased.

She is fiercely defensive of her friends, especially Momo Yaoyorozu. While she can be aggressive with her Quirk to keep others like Mineta in line, she is fundamentally kind and empathetic. Background

Kyoka was born into a musical family; her father, Kyotoku Jiro, is a composer, and her mother, Mika Jiro, is a musician. She inherited her "Earphone Jack" Quirk from her mother. Growing up, she was heavily influenced by her parents' love for rock music and learned to play various instruments, including the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. 

Despite her immense talent and love for music, Kyoka struggled with choosing between being a musician like her parents or becoming a hero. She ultimately chose the hero path because she wanted to dedicate her life to helping others, rather than just performing. She initially feared her parents would be disappointed that she didn't pursue music professionally. However, when she confessed her desire to attend U.A. High School, they were fully supportive, encouraging her to forge her own path. 

Earlier in her time at U.A., Kyoka was somewhat embarrassed by her deep interest in music, viewing it as a hobby that was "unrelated to heroism". She also dealt with self-confidence issues regarding her appearance compared to her more "feminine" classmates. Her arc reached a major turning point during the U.A. School Festival, where she led Class 1-A's band. This performance helped her realize that her musical talents could bring joy and healing to others, bridging her two passions. 

By the series' conclusion, which extends eight years past the final war (reaching roughly 2025 in the narrative timeline), Kyoka has successfully balanced both worlds. She is the No. 30 Pro Hero and has also established herself as a professional musician.

These jacks are highly versatile, serving as tools for surveillance, offensive vibration attacks, and even extra limbs. However, her highly sensitive hearing makes her vulnerable to loud, sudden sound-based attacks.

  • Extendable Lobes: Jiro can stretch her earlobes up to 6 meters. They are prehensile and sturdy enough to be used as whips or to pierce hard materials like concrete.

  • Heartbeat Amplification: By plugging her jacks into an object, Jiro can channel the sound of her heartbeat through them as a violent vibration attack. This causes internal damage to objects or incapacitates enemies with sonic blasts.

  • Enhanced Hearing: Her jacks are connected to her inner ear, allowing her to hear minuscule sounds and vibrations. By plugging them into walls or the ground, she can detect enemies or movement within a radius of at least 12 meters (and up to 300 meters with training).

  • Sound Canceling: By plugging into her boots and emitting a specific frequency, she can cancel out external sound-based attacks.

A significant personal arc involved her internal conflict over whether her love for rock music was "un-heroic." Her goal became to use her musical talents to inspire and bring joy to others, which she achieved during the School Festival.

In battle, she aims to provide critical support through reconnaissance and crowd control, often prioritizing the safety of her classmates. Jiro is often shown to be an empathetic individual, seen in her desire to help Eri, a young girl rescued from villains, experience happiness by performing with the class band. In the final arcs of 2025, she worked alongside other Heroes to stop major villains like All For One and Tomura Shigaraki. 

Within her class, Jiro is known for her snarky and unenthusiastic exterior, particularly toward Denki Kaminari and Minoru Mineta. However, she is respected for her intelligence and organized approach to combat. She often devises plans that utilize her environment or her teammates' quirks effectively.
