Portgas D. Ace, also known as "Fire Fist" Ace, is a major character in the One Piece manga and anime series. He is the sworn older brother of the series' protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy, and the biological son of the legendary Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.

Appearance
Ace is characterized by his muscular build, black wavy hair, and a face with distinctive freckles on both cheeks. He stands at 185 cm (6'1") and bears a strong facial resemblance to his biological father, Gol D. Roger, in his youth. His most recognizable physical features are his two large tattoos.
On his back, he has a large purple symbol of the Whitebeard Pirates, which is a skull with a white mustache and a cross behind it. He considers this symbol to be his "pride and joy". While on his arm he has the letters "ASCE" written vertically, with the "S" crossed out as a tribute to his sworn brother Sabo.
Ace's outfit is iconic for its western-inspired, pirate aesthetic. He wears an orange cowboy hat featuring two blue badges on the brim, one frowning and one smiling, and a string of red beads. He also has a red beaded necklace and a red-and-white striped bracelet on his left wrist.
Ace rarely wears a shirt, typically opting only for open-front vests or nothing at all on his torso. He wears black knee-length shorts with an orange belt and a second unfastened belt with a red "A" buckle on his right hip, while he carries a green-sheathed dagger on his left hip and a Log Pose on his left wrist.
Personality
Ace is known for a personality that blends polite maturity with a reckless, fiery temper. While he shares certain "D." traits with his brother Luffy, such as an insatiable appetite and a love for parties, he is generally seen as the more intelligent and well-mannered of the two. Unlike the naturally rowdy Luffy, Ace set out to specifically learn proper manners. He asked Makino to teach him how to be polite so he could properly thank Shanks for saving his brother.
He possessed a "never run away" policy inherited from his father. This stubbornness was his greatest flaw, as he could be easily provoked by anyone who insulted his family, particularly Whitebeard. Because he was the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, Ace grew up questioning his right to exist. He lived in a constant struggle with his parentage, only finding peace through the love of his sworn brothers and the Whitebeard Pirates.
Ace's primary motivation was protecting those he cared about. This loyalty was so intense that he often refused to back down from a fight—even when outmatched—to ensure his loved ones' safety. A recurring gag in the series is Ace's extreme narcolepsy, where he randomly falls asleep while eating or talking. He was also highly impulsive, frequently rushing into danger without a plan.
Background
Ace was born as Gol D. Ace, the biological son of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. To protect him from the World Government, his mother held her pregnancy for 20 months through sheer willpower, dying immediately after his birth. Ace grew up hearing people curse his father's name, leading to a deep-seated insecurity and a recurring question: "Should I have been born?". He adopted his mother's surname, Portgas, to distance himself from Roger.
Ace was raised on Mt. Colubo by the mountain bandit Curly Dadan under the secret oversight of Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp. When Garp decided to leave Luffy in Dadan’s care as well, Ace initially rejected Luffy but eventually formed a deep bond with him and Sabo. The three became sworn brothers after performing a "sakazuki" ceremony with shared cups of sake.
After Sabo was presumably killed by a World Noble, Ace and Luffy vowed to set sail at age 17 and live lives with "no regrets". At 17, Ace set out as a pirate and founded the Spade Pirates. While shipwrecked on the island of Sixis, he met his first crewmate, Masked Deuce, and found the Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit), which granted him control over fire.
He quickly became a "Super Rookie," even turning down an invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea. Ace sought to surpass his father by taking the head of Whitebeard (Edward Newgate), his father’s greatest rival. During this personal mission, he fought the Warlord Jinbe for five days to a stalemate before Whitebeard himself appeared and easily defeated Ace.
After hundreds of failed assassination attempts against Whitebeard, Ace was moved by the crew's familial bond. He eventually accepted Whitebeard as his "true" father and became the Commander of the 2nd Division.
Ace's story took a tragic turn when his subordinate, Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard), murdered crewmate Thatch to steal the Yami Yami no Mi. Despite Whitebeard’s misgivings, Ace’s sense of duty led him to hunt Teach down, eventually resulting in his defeat at Banaro Island and subsequent capture by the World Government.
This would lead to Luffy breaking into Impel Down and storming Marineford in an attempt to free him, only to fall short as the public execution of Portgas D. Ace was carried out by the marines when Admiral Sakazuki used his lava fist to punch a hold straight through Ace from behind as he shielded Luffy from the attack.
Powers and Abilities
Portgas D. Ace, known as "Fire Fist" Ace, was an incredibly powerful pirate whose strength was recognized by some of the most formidable figures in the world, including the Emperors Shanks and Whitebeard. His abilities were a combination of mastery over a rare Devil Fruit, a naturally superhuman physique, and the latent potential of his Haki.
Devil Fruit
Portgas D. Ace possessed the powers of the Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit), a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allowed him to create, control, and transform his body into fire at will. This gave him the epithet "Fire Fist Ace" due to his signature style of launching massive columns of fire through his punches.
Core Flame Flame Fruit Abilities
Intangibility: As a Logia user, physical attacks (like swords or bullets) pass harmlessly through Ace's fiery body unless the attacker uses Armament Haki or exploits his elemental weakness.
Fire Generation & Manipulation: Ace can generate massive amounts of flames from any part of his body.
Flight/Propulsion: He can use fire to propel himself through the air or increase the speed and impact of his physical strikes.
Signature Abilities
Ace developed various creative ways to use his flames in combat:
Hiken (Fire Fist): His most famous move, where he turns his fist into a giant column of fire capable of destroying several ships at once.
Higan (Fire Gun): He pointed his fingers like pistols and fired bullets of compressed flame.
Jujika (Cross Fire): By crossing his index fingers, he launched a cross-shaped beam of fire at his target.
Hotarubi & Hidaruma (Firefly Light & Fiery Doll): He created small, greenish-yellow fireballs that floated around an enemy before converging on them simultaneously to cause an explosion.
Kyokaen (Mirror Fire Flame): A defensive move where he released a wall of fire to block incoming attacks, such as when he countered Aokiji's ice.
Dai Enkai: Entei (Great Flame Commandment: Flame Emperor): His ultimate technique, amassing a massive amount of fire into a giant sphere resembling a sun.
Combat Skills and Weaponry
Ace’s raw physical attributes allowed him to fight high-tier opponents even when his Devil Fruit was neutralized.
Immense Strength: Even as a child, he could hunt giant animals and beat adult thugs half to death.
Abnormal Stamina: His most famous feat of endurance was fighting Jinbe to a literal standstill for five days straight.
Extreme Durability: He was one of the few prisoners in Impel Down who didn't flinch during the "baptism" in boiling water, showing incredible pain tolerance.
Expert Hand-to-Hand Combat: Ace was a skilled brawler. Even when Blackbeard’s darkness neutralized his fire, Ace was still able to land heavy physical blows.
Staff/Dagger Proficiency: In his youth, Ace primarily fought with a long pipe or staff. As a pirate, he carried a tactical dagger on his hip, though he was rarely seen using it in major battles.
Haki
Ace is one of the rare characters confirmed to possess all three types of Haki.
Armament Haki: Creates an armor-like force that strengthens attacks and defenses, allowing armament haki users to harm Devil Fruit users and ignore their powers. Detailed in the One Piece Novel A, Ace awakened this during a fierce battle against Vice Admiral Draw. He was highly proficient, though some sources suggest he eventually relied more on his Devil Fruit.
Observation Haki: Gives individuals a sixth sense that allows them to perceive and predict their opponent's movements. In its advanced form, they can see moments into the future. Ace possessed the ability to sense the presence and strength of others, though it was less highlighted than his offensive capabilities.
Conqueror's Haki: A rare form of Haki that allows individuals to knock out those with weak wills. With advanced control, conqueror’s Haki users can coat their body with this Haki to further enhance their attacks. He first awakened this at age 10 to save Sabo from the Bluejam Pirates. While he rarely used it on screen as an adult, it was a testament to his "kingly" potential.
Goals and Reputation
In the world of One Piece, Portgas D. Ace is defined by a paradox: to the public, he was a "monster" whose very blood was a sin; to his allies, he was a legendarily loyal brother and commander. Ultimately, Ace's worldwide reputation was one of fearsome power and dangerous heritage, earning him a massive bounty of 550,000,000 berries.
As the biological son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, the World Government viewed his existence as a global threat. Fleet Admiral Sengoku believed Ace had the potential to become the next Pirate King. Though long before joining the Whitebeard Pirates, he was notorious enough as the captain of the Spade Pirates to be offered a position as a Seven Warlord of the Sea (Shichibukai), which he famously turned down.
His moniker, “Fire Fist” Ace, came from his mastery of the Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit). He was known for his incredible strength, once destroying a fleet of Baroque Works ships with a single punch. While the world feared him, those close to him respected him for his character rather than his bloodline.
Ace was the 2nd Division Commander and was loved as a son by Whitebeard. His loyalty to his "Pops" was so absolute that he pursued Blackbeard across the seas to avenge a fallen crewmate, despite warnings. Ironically, despite his brash nature as a child, Ace was known to the Straw Hat Pirates as surprisingly polite and well-mannered—the polar opposite of Luffy.
His reputation for never backing down from a fight was both his greatest strength and his fatal flaw. Like his father, he refused to run away when his loved ones were threatened or insulted, which ultimately led to his sacrifice at Marineford.
Among fans, Ace remains one of the most beloved characters in the series. Many viewers see him as a deeply human character who struggled with the meaning of his existence. His final words—"Thank you for loving me"—are considered one of the most emotional moments in anime history. While some fans debate his strength compared to newer characters, he is technically one of the few confirmed users of all three types of Haki.
