Ram is a major supporting character in the Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World series. She is a maid at the Roswaal Mansion and the older twin sister of Rem. Ram is an Oni (demon) who was born as a child prodigy. She is known for her blunt, self-centered, and often sarcastic attitude, particularly towards the protagonist Natsuki Subaru, whom she nicknames "Barusu". Despite her sharp tongue, she is deeply loyal and protective of those she cares about, especially Rem and Roswaal.

Appearance
Ram is characterized by her signature pink-themed appearance and her sharp, stoic demeanor. While she looks nearly identical to her younger sister Rem, they are essentially mirror images of one another. She has medium-length, light pink hair cut into a short bob. Her bangs are parted to the right, specifically covering her left eye. She has large, slanted red-pink eyes.
Ram stands at 154 cm (approximately 5'1") tall and has a slender, petite frame. Notably, she has a smaller chest than her sister Rem. As an Oni (demon), she was born with a single horn on her forehead. However, this horn was cut off during a childhood attack by the Witch's Cult, leaving her with a permanent scar and significantly reduced magical power.
Her standard outfit at the Roswaal Mansion consists of a short black dress with white flowery accents, a white apron, and a matching flowery headpiece. The uniform is modified to expose her shoulders and is paired with white thigh-high socks and black Mary Jane shoes. She wears purple cross-shaped hair clips and a flower-shaped ribbon on the right side of her head, which contrasts with Rem's left-sided blue accessories.
For travel, she sometimes wears a white hooded robe. During colder months, she uses a modified uniform with longer sleeves, fluffy cuffs, and pink earmuffs. In later story arcs, she switches to a long-sleeved aqua-green dress with white frills, black leggings, aqua-green boots, and a matching hooded cloak.
Personality
Ram is defined by a sharp-tongued, sardonic, and seemingly self-centered exterior that masks a deeply protective and loyal heart. While she often appears lazy or indifferent to those outside her inner circle, she is highly observant and protective of her sister, Rem, and her master, Roswaal.
Ram is famous for her "sharp tongue" and frequently teases or insults the protagonist, Subaru, often calling him "Barusu". She doesn't mince words and is known for her brutal honesty. She often does things at her own pace and can seem unmotivated, frequently leaving the majority of household chores at the mansion to Rem.
Despite her cold demeanor, she is intensely loyal. This is most evident in her dedication to Roswaal, for whom she has complex romantic feelings, and her sister Rem, whom she has protected since childhood. In emergencies, she tends to hide her worry under a calm facade. She possesses excellent judgment of character and can often see through people better than others.
While she presents a "merciless" style, she often helps Subaru and others at critical moments, showing a hidden warmth for those she acknowledges as partners. With Rem, Ram is a nurturing big sister who encouraged Rem to forge her own path despite Rem's inferiority complex.
When it comes to Roswaal her feelings are a mix of initial hatred (due to his role in her village's destruction) and eventual deep love. Her attitude towards Subaru is initially distrustful, but she has grown to acknowledge him as a partner, though she maintains her teasing and harsh verbal style as a way of interacting.
Background
Ram is the older twin sister of Rem and a former prodigy of the Oni Clan, whose life was drastically changed after losing her horn in a cult attack. Ram and Rem were born in a hidden Oni village. In their culture, twins were traditionally executed at birth because each possessed only one horn instead of the usual two. However, the infant Ram saved them both by demonstrating a massive burst of wind magic that overpowered the village chief.
Because of her immense talent, the village believed she was the reincarnation of the "Oni God". Growing up, Ram excelled in everything she did, from magic to physical tasks, overshadowing her sister Rem. Despite the praise, Ram detested the pressure of being a "child of god" and often felt relieved to lose her horn later, as she felt it shackled her true self and caused her sister to suffer in her shadow.
The turning point in Ram's life occurred when the Witch Cult attacked their village. While fighting to protect a distracted Rem, a cultist named Faust sliced off Ram's horn. For an Oni, the horn acts as a gate to absorb mana from the atmosphere. Losing it meant Ram could no longer sustain her massive power without extreme physical toll and constant mana infusions.
As their village burned, the twins were saved by Roswaal L. Mathers, who took them in as maids. To survive without her horn, Ram requires regular mana infusions from Roswaal. Ram eventually developed romantic feelings for Roswaal, despite knowing he allowed the attack on her village to happen to further his own plans as dictated by his "Gospel". She entered into a contract with him where her life would be his, but she harbored a secret intent to eventually "destroy" his obsessive desires and take him away for herself.
Powers and Abilities
In the Re:Zero series, Ram is a member of the Oni race who, despite losing her mana-gathering horn as a child, remains one of the most powerful and technically skilled characters in the series. While her lack of a horn severely limits her stamina, her mastery of wind magic and unique abilities allow her to punch far above her weight class.
Oni Bloodline and Oni Form
As a member of the Oni (Demon) race, Ram possesses physical attributes far above those of a normal human. Beyond direct combat magic, Ram also possesses specialized genetic and divine gifts.
Divine Protection of Clairvoyance: Ram can synchronize her vision with any living creature on the same wavelength (including birds and insects), allowing her to see over vast distances and scout the battlefield.
Synesthesia: A telepathic bond shared with her twin sister, Rem, allowing them to share feelings and sensory information.
Superhuman Physicality: Even without her horn, she possesses speed and reflexes far beyond those of a normal human.
Mana Absorption (Via Wand): Because she cannot absorb mana naturally from the air anymore, she uses a special magic wand created by Roswaal from the remains of her severed horn to channel energy more efficiently.
The "Oni God" Prime (Hypothetical Strength): Ram was born a prodigy, often called the reincarnation of the Oni God.
With Her Horn: Author Tappei Nagatsuki has stated that a horned Ram would be the second strongest character in the series, second only to the "Sword Saint" Reinhard van Astrea.
Current State: In the present story, she often holds back her true power behind metaphorical "shackles" to prevent her body from breaking under the strain of using mana without a horn. In later arcs, she can temporarily bypass these limits by borrowing mana from her sister, allowing her to briefly access her prime "God" levels of strength.
Magic Ability
Ram is a high-level specialist in Wind Magic, which she uses with surgical precision to create invisible, lethal attacks.
Fura: Her signature spell, firing high-speed wind blades capable of slicing through stone and flesh.
El Fura: A more powerful blast of wind used to repel heavy objects or multiple enemies.
Ul Fura: Creates a massive windstorm that traps and shreds targets from all directions.
Al Fura: Her most devastating offensive spell; it generates a wild windstorm so sharp it can disintegrate objects and burst people's eardrums.
Combat and Other Skills
Ram’s combat style is defined by a shift from raw power to a high-precision tactical approach. Despite being severely nerfed by the loss of her horn, she remains a top-tier martial artist and a brilliant strategist who uses her limited mana with maximum efficiency.
Skill-Based Combat: She is a "skill god" capable of keeping up with legendary warriors through pure technique. She has shown the ability to copy and even improve complex techniques, such as invisible blade arts, after seeing them only once.
Analytical Prediction: Ram possesses "off-the-charts" martial arts skills and godlike intuition. By synthesizing her Clairvoyance with an opponent's movements and intent, she can predict attacks with extreme accuracy.
Strategic Support: She often acts as the "eyes" and "brain" of the battlefield. Her Divine Protection of Clairvoyance allows her to scout for allies from up to 1,000 miles away, while her tactical mind allows her to push opponents much stronger than her—like Garfiel—into corners by exploiting their psychological and environmental weaknesses.
Defensive Mastery: Ram can redirect the force of incoming attacks and use "supernatural" body control to avoid fatal wounds even in chaotic environments.
Genius Intellect: Ram is academically gifted and an expert judge of character. She was the only one in the mansion to correctly discern early on that Subaru was not a threat despite the "Witch's Scent" on him.
Maid & Administrative Work: While her sister Rem handles the majority of the heavy physical chores, Ram is an adept housekeeper and handles complex documents for the Mathers domain when Roswaal is unavailable.
Leadership: Since childhood, she was groomed to lead the Oni tribe and maintains a commanding, authoritative presence within the Emilia camp.
Goals and Reputation
Ram's primary goals revolve around her deep-seated loyalty and complex emotional ties to Roswaal L. Mathers and her twin sister, Rem. Ram’s most driving goal is to assist Roswaal in his personal objectives, including his desire to kill the Divine Dragon. While she originally served him due to a contract, her feelings evolved into a complicated form of love.
During Arc 4, it is revealed that Ram actually aims to "destroy" Roswaal’s current self—specifically his slavish devotion to the Tome of Wisdom. Her goal was to force him to stop following the book's pre-determined path so that he could live as a "normal" person again.
Despite often appearing blunt or detached, Ram is fiercely protective of her younger sister. In later story arcs, especially after Rem's name and memories are devoured by Gluttony, Ram's primary motivation becomes finding a way to restore her sister's existence and memories.
While less personal than her ties to Roswaal and Rem, Ram works to ensure Emilia succeeds in the Royal Selection. This is partly because Emilia's success is tied to Roswaal's ultimate plans and partly because it provides a stable future for those she cares about.
In the world of Re:Zero, Ram is generally perceived as a highly capable but difficult individual. She is known for being self-centered and sardonic, often speaking in a degrading tone to those around her. She famously uses the nickname "Barusu" to humble Subaru, reflecting a relationship he describes as similar to bickering siblings.
Despite losing her horn, her reputation as a former demon prodigy persists. She was spared as a child because of her immense potential, and even now, she is viewed as intellectually superior and a strong judge of character. Her reputation is anchored by her unwavering devotion to Roswaal L. Mathers, which is often seen as excessive or even toxic by others. However, her camp members know she is one of the first to enter a fray and will risk her life to save those she cares about, including Subaru and the village children.
In the fan community, Ram is a polarizing "cult favorite" who often sits in the shadow of the series' main heroines. Ram typically has a smaller fanbase compared to Rem and Emilia. In a massive 2016 character poll, she ranked 7th with roughly 3.5% of the vote, while her sister Rem dominated with nearly 50%. Fans often feel she is undervalued and overlooked in favor of the "waifu" appeal of other characters.
A significant portion of the community views her as cold and verbally abusive, particularly due to her harsh treatment of Subaru. Conversely, her dedicated agenda followers appreciate her as a complex, layered character whose insults are a mask for her care and who provides a necessary reality check for the protagonist. Though, it should be noted that some fans find her character frustrating because of her lenience toward Roswaal, even when he acts as a villain, leading to debates about whether she truly goes along with his plots out of love or if she is a victim of deeply ingrained trauma.
