Emilia is the main heroine and deuteragonist of the anime and light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. She is a silver-haired Half-Elf and a candidate to become the 42nd monarch of the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. Despite her kind and selfless nature, she is widely feared and discriminated against because her appearance, specifically her silver hair and half-elf heritage, is nearly identical to that of Satella, the "Witch of Envy" who nearly destroyed the world 400 years ago.

Appearance
Emilia is a beautiful half-elf known for her striking and elegant appearance, which is famously, and controversially, similar to the Witch of Envy, Satella. She is approximately 164 to 165 cm tall (about 5'5") and has a slender, graceful build. She has long, wavy silver hair that reaches down to her waist or hips. Which she typically styles with decorative braids and a white cross clip on the left side.
Her eyes are a distinct purple-blue or amethyst color with bluish tints in the pupils. As a half-elf, she has noticeably pointed ears, which she often tries to hide due to the discrimination she faces. Her complexion is described as pale, almost ghost-white and clear.
Emilia's main outfit follows a consistent white and purple theme. She often wears a short, long-sleeved white and purple dress featuring a high collar and a green jewel at the neck. The sleeves are often detached or flared with golden yellow emblems. She wears white thigh-high socks or boots with purple highlights and frequently wears a white flower-shaped ribbon on the right side of her head and a purple ribbon.
In public, she typically wears a white magical cloak with cat ears on the hood that uses a "cognitive obstruction" enchantment to hide her identity and prevent people from recognizing her as a half-elf. Throughout the series, she has also worn other specialized outfits, such as a white dress and mantle for Subaru's knight ceremony and a special wedding dress during Arc 5.
Personality
Emilia is a fundamentally kind-hearted and selfless individual who frequently goes out of her way to help others. Despite her compassionate nature, she often refuses to admit her own altruism, instead stubbornly framing her helpful actions as "selfish" desires.
Due to being isolated in the Elior Forest for most of her life, she is initially unfamiliar with social norms and can be somewhat of an "airhead". This is compounded by the fact that while she is physically 18 and over a century old, her mental maturity is initially closer to that of a 14-year-old.
Once she sets a goal, such as freeing her frozen family or participating in the Royal Selection to create a world without prejudice, she is incredibly steadfast. However, because of her resemblance to the Witch of Envy, she has faced lifelong hatred and isolation, which initially made her hesitant to open up to others or share her burdens.
As the series progresses, especially after the events of Arc 4 (Season 2), she becomes significantly more assertive and self-assured. She begins to stand up for herself and even reclaims the "Witch" label as a symbol of her own strength. She frequently uses antiquated, "old-fashioned" words that she likely learned from her childhood in the forest.
Background
Emilia's backstory is a central mystery in Re:Zero, primarily revealed during her trials in the Sanctuary (Season 2). Over 100 years before the main story, Emilia lived in the Elior Forest with an elven community. She was raised by her paternal aunt, Fortuna, whom she viewed as a mother figure. Her biological parents, an elf father and a human mother, are deceased, with clues suggesting her mother may have been a witch.
Emilia was kept in a "Princess Room" to protect her. Despite this, she often snuck out and eventually discovered a mysterious Seal deep in the forest that she was forbidden from opening. She formed a close bond with Geuse (later Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti), who led a moderate faction of the Witch Cult that regularly brought supplies to the elves.
Her peaceful life ended when the Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas, and the Witch of Vainglory, Pandora, attacked the forest to force open the Seal. During the battle, Pandora used her authority to trick Geuse into killing Fortuna.
Driven by grief and rage, young Emilia lost control of her immense magical power, accidentally freezing the entire forest and all its inhabitants, including herself. Pandora erased Emilia’s memories of these events to hide her involvement.
About seven years before meeting Subaru, the ice partially melted, and Emilia was found by the Great Spirit Puck. He became her surrogate father and mentor, sealing away her traumatic memories to protect her mental state.
She lived in isolation until Roswaal L. Mathers approached her. He offered her a chance to become the 42nd monarch of Lugunica, promising that the Dragon’s Blood obtained through the throne could unfreeze the elves in Elior Forest. Emilia eventually confronts and overcomes these memories during the Sanctuary Trials, allowing her to fully accept her past and continue her journey toward the throne.
Powers and Abilities
Emilia is one of the most powerful magic users in Re:Zero, possessing a massive natural mana pool that is said to rival or even surpass that of the Witch of Envy, Satella. Her abilities primarily revolve around temperature manipulation and spirit arts.
Core Magical Abilities
Contrary to common belief, Emilia's natural magic attribute is Fire, not Water. In the Re:Zero world, fire magic governs temperature; Emilia uses it to drain heat from the atmosphere to create and manipulate ice.
Huma / Ul Huma / Al Huma: Standard ice spells ranging from simple barriers and icicles to massive ten-meter long spears capable of destroying buildings.
Ice Brand Arts: A combat technique that allows her to instantly conjure sturdy ice weapons like swords, axes, and hammers for close-quarters fighting.
Ice Soldiers: An advanced application where she creates life-sized soldiers made of ice, often taking the form of Subaru, that follow her orders and can regenerate as long as she provides mana.
Icicle Line: A specialized barrier of ice particles that she can instantly transform into hundreds of flying weapons to swarm an opponent from all directions.
Ice Flowers: A brutal technique where she creates ice blossoms on an opponent's wounds; these flowers "bloom" by draining the target's blood and life force.
Absolute Zero: Her ultimate trump card, which creates a vacuum that freezes everything within range, effectively "freezing time" itself.
Absolute Zero (Combat Variant): In high-stakes battles, she can unleash a small vacuum of cold that effectively freezes the flow of time within a specific area, nullifying even powerful dragon breath attacks.
Spirit Arts
As a Spirit Arts User, Emilia can use atmospheric mana through contracts with spirits.
Puck: Her former contract with the Great Spirit Puck granted her immense defensive and offensive capabilities. Puck could act independently, manifesting as the "Beast of the End" to freeze the entire world if Emilia were to die.
Quasi Spirits: She is currently contracted to several minor spirits that assist her with various tasks, most notably Healing Magic.
Lesser Spirits: Emilia has a high affinity for spirits, allowing her to communicate with them to gather information or sense hidden enemies.
Combat and Other Skills
Emilia’s combat style is a versatile mix of high-output ice magic and an instinctive, superhuman martial arts style. While she often fights from a distance with powerful spells, she is equally dangerous in close-quarters combat.
Instinctive Martial Arts: She uses a unique fighting style based on pure instinct, incorporating powerful palm strikes, kicks, and "ice-skating" movements to glide around the battlefield.
Superhuman Stats: She can lift several metric tons and move at sub-relativistic speeds, allowing her to catch whip-tips with her bare hands or react to light-speed attacks.
Enhanced Senses: Emilia can sense the "intent" of attacks before they land, allowing her to dodge even when her physical senses haven't yet processed the threat.
Goals and Reputation
Emilia's primary goal in Re:Zero is to become the 42nd monarch of the Kingdom of Lugunica during the Royal Selection. While her ambition might seem political, her motivations are deeply personal and altruistic. Emilia’s ultimate driving force is to melt the permafrost covering the Elior Forest. She hopes to use the blood of the Holy Dragon Volcanica, which is promised to the winner of the Royal Selection, to save the frozen citizens of her former home, including her aunt Fortuna.
Having faced lifelong discrimination as a silver-haired half-elf, she aims to create a nation where all citizens are treated equally. She wants to build a world where she and other demi-humans can live openly without fear of being shunned or hated. Because she closely resembles the Witch of Envy, Satella, Emilia is often feared and despised. Her participation in the Royal Selection is a way to prove her own worth and separate her identity from the Witch's legacy.
Throughout various story arcs, her goals shift toward immediate survival and protection, such as defeating the Great Rabbit, the White Whale, and members of the Witch Cult alongside Subaru. Additionally, during the trials at the Sanctuary, Emilia successfully faced her repressed memories of the Elior Forest disaster, allowing her to move forward with a stronger resolve.
Due to her resemblance to the Witch of Envy, Emilia began the story with a near-universally negative reputation. She faced extreme prejudice, social ostracization, and was widely feared as the "Witch of Frost". Many view her candidacy as a cruel joke or a dangerous omen, often suspecting her of being a puppet for Roswaal L. Mathers.
However, her reputation has improved drastically following major achievements, including defeating the Great Rabbit and multiple Sin Archbishops, forming a peace treaty with the Empire of Vollachia, and winning the respect of high-ranking rivals like Anastasia Hoshin and even the prickly Priscilla Barielle.
During Season 1, Emilia was frequently "slandered" by fans as bland, boring, or useless. Much of this stemmed from "waifu wars," where fans of Rem were upset that Subaru chose Emilia despite Rem's overwhelming devotion and sacrifices.
Her popularity surged as her backstory was revealed, showing her past trauma and her mental age of roughly 14 due to being frozen for a century. Fans began to appreciate her human flaws and her role as a foil to Subaru’s self-destructive tendencies. She is now widely regarded as a complex and resilient leader.
