Who Is Natsuki Subaru?

Natsuki Subaru is the main protagonist of the light novel and anime series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World. Originally a hikikomori (shut-in) from modern-day Japan, he is suddenly transported to a fantasy world while returning home from a convenience store. He is most known for his unique and traumatic ability, Return by Death, which allows him to rewind time to a "save point" whenever he dies, retaining all memories of the failed timeline while everyone else's are reset.

Appearance

Subaru is commonly described as a wholly average teenage boy, approximately 17 to 19 years old, standing around 172 to 173 cm (5'8") tall. He has short, messy black hair and brown eyes (though his eyes are depicted as black in the light novels). A defining characteristic is his "evil gaze," caused by his sharp, intimidating sanpaku eyes—where the white space is visible below the iris.

Despite his previous "shut-in" lifestyle, Subaru has a surprisingly athletic and toned build, a result of regular physical training back in Japan. He is most iconic for his orange, black, and white tracksuit, which he was wearing when summoned from the real world. The set includes a zipped-up jacket with an "N" brand symbol and matching deep-grey trousers with orange stripes.

Throughout the story, Subaru adopts several different looks based on his circumstances. While working at the Roswaal mansion, he wears a standard black and white butler's outfit. During certain infiltration missions, Subaru uses a female disguise with a long black wig, heavy makeup, and elaborate dresses. There is also a specific narrative arc, where he is physically transformed into a 10-year-old boy, wearing an oversized green shirt and yellow-accented clothing.

Personality

Natsuki Subaru is a complex, deeply flawed, and realistic character whose personality evolves significantly through trauma and self-reflection. Initially presented as a shut-in with low self-esteem masked by forced bravado, he eventually grows into a resilient and selfless individual.

Despite his loud and confident exterior, Subaru struggles with deep-seated feelings of inadequacy. He often uses negative adjectives to describe himself and originally viewed himself as an "average" person who failed to live up to his father's greatness. He frequently uses boisterous, eccentric behavior and dramatic poses as a defense mechanism to hide his social anxiety. In the early arcs, this manifested as entitlement and a tendency to view others as "NPCs" in his own hero fantasy.

Subaru’s most defining positive trait is his absolute refusal to give up on those he cares about, even when subjected to extreme physical and psychological torture. This resilience allows him to maintain his sanity even after countless loops through his "Return by Death" ability.

Subaru often makes rash decisions based on a heightened sense of justice or intense emotions, which sometimes leads to regrettable outcomes or social blunders. While initially self-centered, he eventually develops a genuine, selfless desire to help others. His growth is marked by learning to value his own life alongside the lives of his friends.

When he arrives in the new world expecting a "power fantasy" experience, but his expectations clash with reality, and he becomes desperate, clingy, and prone to "cringe-worthy" emotional outbursts. After facing repeated failure and trauma, Subaru hits rock bottom. His confrontation with his own self-hatred—often aided by characters like Rem—serves as the catalyst for him to stop pretending and start building a genuine identity.

This growth allows him to mature into a capable strategist who uses his past failures to protect his allies. He begins to acknowledge his own worth and moves from being a "hero" of his own story to a reliable pillar for others.

Background

Before being summoned to another world, Natsuki Subaru was a hikikomori (shut-in) in modern Japan. His backstory, primarily explored during the "First Trial" of the Sanctuary in the second season of the Re:Zero anime, reveals that his social withdrawal was rooted in a severe inferiority complex and the crushing weight of personal expectations.

Subaru grew up idolizing his father, Natsuki Kenichi, a charismatic, athletic, and universally loved man. In elementary school, Subaru excelled in sports and academics. He took immense pride in being "Kenichi's son," believing that being "great" was his natural identity. However, as he entered middle school, other students began to surpass him. Realizing he was no longer special or naturally superior, Subaru felt he was "failing" to live up to his father’s reputation.

To hide his growing self-loathing and fear of being forgotten, Subaru adopted an over-the-top, eccentric persona. He acted as the "class clown," performing reckless or annoying stunts to stay the center of attention. Over time, his peers grew tired of his act, eventually ignoring or ostracizing him. This pushed him further into isolation.

By high school, the pressure became unbearable. Subaru stopped attending school entirely and spent several months confined to his room, gaming and avoiding reality. He mistakenly believed his parents were disappointed in him and wished they would just give up on him so he wouldn't have to feel the guilt of failing them.

On the day he was summoned, he went to a convenience store—the first time he had left the house in a while. His mother, Naoko, told him to "be safe," a sentiment he ignored at the time and later deeply regretted once he realized he might never see her again.

During the Sanctuary Trials, Subaru is forced to confront these memories. He finally learns that his parents never expected him to be "great" like his father; they simply loved him for being their son. This realization allows him to begin shedding his "false mask" and start growing into a genuine person in the new world.

Powers and Abilities

Natsuki Subaru’s power in Re:Zero doesn't come from raw strength, but from his unique ability to manipulate fate through trial and error. While physically he is roughly as strong as an athletic high schooler, his "Authorities" allow him to overcome impossible odds.

Authorities

Authorities are powers granted by Witch Factors. Unlike magic, they defy natural laws and manifest differently for each user.

  • Return by Death (Envy): His signature power, granted by the Witch of Envy. Upon dying, he is sent back in time to a "checkpoint". While it makes him effectively immortal, it carries heavy trauma as he retains all memories of his gruesome deaths.

  • Invisible Providence (Sloth): Acquired after defeating Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti. Subaru can manifest a single invisible hand that can phase through matter. However, using it causes him intense physical and mental pain.

  • Cor Leonis (Greed): Obtained from Regulus Corneas in Arc 6.

    • First Shift: Allows Subaru to sense the locations of his allies and take on their physical and mental burdens (like pain or fatigue) to keep them fighting.

    • Second Shift: Allows him to distribute his own burdens back to allies who have "opened their hearts" to him.

Magic and Spirit Arts

Subaru has a natural affinity for Yin Magic (shadow-based), but early in the series, he overused his "Gate," causing it to shatter and leaving him unable to use magic on his own.

  • Contract with Beatrice: Subaru is a Spirit Knight contracted to the Great Spirit Beatrice. Because his gate is broken, Beatrice drains his mana to keep him healthy. Together, they can use powerful spells:

    • E・M・M: An absolute defense magic that warps time and space to make Subaru untouchable for a short period.

    • E・M・T: A field that negates mana effects and mana-based attacks within its range.

    • Minya: Crystallized mana stakes that "freeze" the time of whatever they touch, shattering the target upon impact.

Combat and Skills

While Subaru is technically "weak" compared to the superhumans in his world, he has developed a specialized combat style that focuses on mid-range control, mobility, and tactical support.

  • Guiltywhip: Subaru's primary weapon is a whip, which he spent a year training to use with Clind. He can strike at speeds exceeding the speed of sound.

  • Parkour and Stealth: He is highly proficient in parkour and stealth, which helps him navigate dangerous environments.

  • Strategic Genius: His greatest asset is his mind. Having experienced countless loops, he can gather information and coordinate allies to take down enemies far stronger than himself.

  • Pain Tolerance: Due to the trauma of Return by Death, Subaru has an inhumanly high tolerance for pain, allowing him to keep fighting even with broken bones or lethal wounds.

  • Enhanced Intuition: He has developed an "acute nose for danger," allowing him to sense incoming attacks or malice even when he can't see the source.

Goals and Reputation

Natsuki Subaru's primary goals in Re:Zero are centered on his fierce devotion to protecting those he loves, even at the cost of his own life and mental stability. While he lacks a traditional "shonen" endgame like becoming a king himself, his motivations drive the entire narrative of the series.

As Emilia's knight, Subaru's main political goal is to ensure her victory in the Royal Selection. He wants her to be respected and loved by everyone, helping her overcome the prejudice she faces as a half-elf. Additionally, having formed a contract with Beatrice to save her from 400 years of solitude, he is dedicated to providing her a happy life outside the Forbidden Library.

A major internal arc for Subaru is moving past his deep self-hatred and learning to love himself. He strives to become the "hero" that Rem believes he is. After Rem's name and memories were eaten, Subaru's driving force in later arcs is finding a way to wake her up and restore her existence to the world.

Subaru has also become increasingly determined to understand the history of Lugunica and his mysterious connection to the Witch of Envy, Satella. In later arcs, Subaru has expressed a desire to "save" Satella, though the specifics of what this means or how he will achieve it remain a central mystery.

Using his ability, Return by Death, Subaru aims to reach a future where all his friends—the Emilia Camp—survive every catastrophe. He actively seeks to eliminate the Sin Archbishops to end the suffering they cause his companions.

Within the Kingdom of Lugunica, Subaru has transformed from a nameless outsider into a figure of historical significance. He is widely celebrated for his pivotal role in defeating two of the "Three Great Mabeasts"—the White Whale and the Great Rabbit—and for orchestrating the downfall of multiple Sin Archbishops like Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti.

Subaru is the personal knight to Royal Selection candidate Emilia and has earned the deep respect of powerful figures, including the "Sword Saint" Reinhard van Astrea and the "Sword Demon" Wilhelm van Astrea. While his rise was not immediate; he was initially seen as a fool after a public breakdown at the royal court, his subsequent strategic "predictions" (made possible by his Return by Death ability) led others to view him as a tactical genius or visionary.

Among viewers, Subaru remains one of the most divisive protagonists in the isekai genre. Many fans find him difficult to watch due to his early-series arrogance, entitlement, and frequent irrational mistakes. Reviewers often cite his "weakness" and social awkwardness as a departure from typical "power fantasy" leads.

Supporters view him as one of the most realistic and "human" characters in media. His reputation among this group is built on his extreme resilience, self-sacrifice, and the profound character development he undergoes while battling severe psychological trauma. Despite his flaws, critics often praise his role, serving as a subversion of the genre's usual tropes by highlighting the cost of heroism.
