Izuku Midoriya, also known by his hero name "Deku," is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series My Hero Academia. In a world where most people are born with a superpower called a "Quirk," Izuku was born without one. Despite this, he idolized heroes and dreamed of becoming one, especially the world's greatest hero, All Might. Throughout the series, Izuku develops from a timid and insecure boy into a more confident and capable hero. He is known for his analytical skills, his desire to save everyone, and his willingness to sacrifice himself for others.

Appearance
Izuku Midoriya's appearance evolves throughout the My Hero Academia series, but he is consistently recognizable by his messy, dark-green hair and large, expressive green eyes. He has a short, fluffy mop of dark-green hair with black highlights that curls in odd angles, casting shadows on itself. His eyes are large, round, and often wide, with irises that match the green shade of his hair. This gives him an energized and innocent look.
At the beginning of the series, Izuku was short and very thin for his age, but after his ten months of training with All Might, Izuku's initially skinny build becomes much more muscular and toned. As the series progresses, he gains greater definition as he grows stronger. Additionally, Izuku's hero costume undergoes several changes throughout the series, but it maintains a consistent green color scheme and his iconic red sneakers.
Personality
Izuku Midoriya's personality is defined by his profound kindness, selfless courage, and unwavering determination, all of which contrast with his initially timid demeanor. Born without a Quirk, he compensates with a brilliant analytical mind and an indomitable spirit. His character evolves significantly throughout the series, becoming more confident as he gains power.
Despite his timid nature, Izuku possesses a core of immense bravery and never hesitates to help someone in danger, even if he knows he is outmatched. This heroism is demonstrated early in the series when he rushes to save his childhood friend and bully, Katsuki Bakugo, from a villain, an act that deeply impresses All Might.
Izuku is a highly diligent and strategic thinker who constantly takes notes on heroes and their Quirks, compiling a vast mental catalog of abilities and fighting styles. This sharp analytical skill is a key asset in combat, allowing him to devise effective plans and strategies on the fly. Izuku's empathy is one of his most powerful traits, extending even to his enemies. He seeks to understand villains and has expressed a desire to save them from themselves. This profound compassion was particularly evident during his conflict with the League of Villains, where he tries to understand Tomura Shigaraki's pain.
After the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku isolates himself from his friends to protect them from All For One. This leads to him becoming more cold, serious, and paranoid. He neglects his own well-being and takes on a more brutal, reckless fighting style, disregarding his own safety. His friends eventually rescue him from this path of self-destruction and remind him of his core values. He reverts to his more hopeful and compassionate self, though with a newfound maturity and resolve.
Background
Throughout his childhood, Izuku was bullied by his classmates, particularly his childhood friend Katsuki Bakugo, because he lacked any powers. After a courageous act where he rushed in to save Bakugo from a villain, Izuku's innate heroism caught the eye of All Might. This proved to his idol that he had the heart of a true hero, despite his lack of a Quirk. Impressed by his selflessness, All Might decided to pass on his powerful Quirk, "One For All," to Izuku, making him the ninth wielder of the power.
After months of rigorous training, All Might passed One For All to Izuku, finally giving him a superpower and a chance to realize his lifelong dream. Izuku is accepted into U.A. High School, a prestigious academy for heroes in training. There, he learns to control his new and overwhelming power, which initially puts a severe strain on his body. He eventually reclaims the nickname "Deku," which was originally a slur from Bakugo, and uses it as his official hero name.
Due to his years of extensive hero analysis, Izuku is a diligent and strategic thinker. He fills notebooks with detailed observations and battle plans, allowing him to quickly form complex strategies. Izuku's personality evolves throughout the story. Initially timid and insecure, he gradually becomes more confident and courageous, eventually developing strong leadership skills.
After the Paranormal Liberation War, Izuku temporarily leaves U.A. High School. He is targeted by the villain All For One, and he isolates himself to protect his friends. He is eventually convinced to return by his classmates and family. The story traces Izuku's efforts to master One For All and live up to the immense legacy of his idol, All Might, ultimately becoming a symbol of hope for a new generation of heroes.
Powers and Abilities
Izuku Midoriya's powers are derived from the transferable Quirk, One For All, which stockpiles power over generations. As the ninth holder, Izuku can access not only the immense physical strength of One For All but also the individual Quirks of the previous users. Aside from the One For All quirk he inherited, Izuku Midoriya possesses a genius-level intellect, incredible physical strength and agility from years of intense training, a brilliant analytical mind, and a powerfully indomitable will.
Character Traits and Tactical Skills
High Intellect: As a child, Izuku meticulously analyzed heroes and their Quirks, filling notebooks with his observations. This analytical skill allows him to strategize effectively in combat.
Keen Intellect and Strategy: His brilliant tactical mind is often more valuable than his physical power. He is a quick and creative thinker who can formulate complex plans on the fly to take down enemies, even those stronger than him, and maximize the abilities of his teammates. Class 1-A has come to rely on his strategies in many situations.
Superhuman Condition: Even without activating his Quirk, Izuku's rigorous training has given him a high level of physical fitness, far surpassing that of an average person.
Willpower: Izuku has an exceptionally strong will, which has helped him endure immense pain and push past his own physical limits. This willpower was also strong enough to overcome the mind-control of Hitoshi Shinso.
Proficient in Hand-to-Hand Combat: Despite not receiving formal martial arts training at first, Izuku developed an effective combat style. After injuring his arms from overusing One For All, he developed the Shoot Style, which focuses the quirk's power into his naturally stronger legs to deliver devastating kicks.
Quirk Powers and Fighting Styles
In the world of My Hero Academia, a Quirk is a special, superhuman ability unique to an individual, with about 80% of the population possessing one. Quirks are genetic and manifest by the age of four, and are divided into three main categories: Emitter, which allows a user to emit or control something (like fire or electricity); Transformation, which temporarily alters the user's body; and Mutant, which causes a permanent physical anomaly that often aids in their abilities
Quirk Type: The core of One For All is a powerful source of energy that can be transferred and stockpiled. It is classified as an Emitter Quirk because the power is external to Izuku's body, which he then projects. While Izuku can use borrowed powers in different ways, the fundamental nature of One For All remains an energy-based power, not a body-altering one.
One For All: This is the core of Izuku's abilities and provides him with immense superhuman strength, speed, durability, and agility. While initially difficult to control without injuring himself, he develops several techniques to manage its power.
Full Cowl: This technique allows Izuku to distribute the power of One For All evenly throughout his body to boost his offensive and defensive capabilities without breaking his bones. He is shown to increase his safe power output percentage throughout the series, from 5% up to 45%.
100%: Izuku can channel 100% of One For All's power into a single body part for a devastating, one-shot attack. However, doing so will severely damage or break the limb he uses, though he eventually masters techniques to mitigate this.
Shoot Style: To reduce damage to his arms, Izuku developed a fighting style that primarily uses his naturally stronger leg muscles to channel One For All's power for powerful kicks.
Inherited Quirks: The Quirk factors of the previous One For All users were passed down, granting Izuku additional powers.
Float: Originally belonging to the seventh user, Nana Shimura, this Quirk gives Izuku the ability to suspend himself in mid-air. When combined with One For All's air pressure, it allows him to fly.
Smokescreen: From the sixth user, En, this Quirk allows Izuku to generate thick clouds of smoke from his body to obscure his movements and vision from opponents.
Blackwhip: From the fifth user, Daigoro Banjo, this Quirk allows Izuku to generate tendrils of dark energy from his body. He can use it to capture enemies, swing from buildings, or reinforce his own body. Blackwhip's power is tied to the user's emotions, becoming stronger when fueled by anger.
Danger Sense: The fourth user's Quirk, Danger Sense, alerts Izuku to nearby threats with a stabbing sensation in his head. It activates when he detects malice or hostility.
Fa Jin: The Quirk of the third user allows Izuku to build and store kinetic energy through repetitive movements, which he can then release in an explosive burst of speed and power.
Gearshift: Inherited from the second user, this Quirk gives Izuku the ability to change the speed and velocity of anything he touches, including himself.
Goals and Reputation
Izuku Midoriya's primary goal is to become the world's greatest hero, saving people with a smile, just like his idol All Might. His reputation evolves significantly over the course of My Hero Academia, from a timid, quirkless boy to a formidable and inspirational hero recognized by allies, enemies, and the public.
Midoriya's central motivation is to inherit All Might's legacy and become the next great Symbol of Peace. He strives to inspire hope and make everyone feel safe, a dream he has held since childhood despite being born without a quirk. After inheriting the powerful Quirk from All Might, a major ongoing goal is to master its immense power and the six additional Quirks of the past users. His journey involves strengthening his body to withstand the power and finding innovative ways to use it.
As the bearer of One For All, Midoriya becomes the central figure in the battle against the supervillain All For One and his successor, Tomura Shigaraki. However, Midoriya's intense empathy drives him to not only defeat Shigaraki but to also try and save him from All For One's control.
Before receiving One For All, Midoriya's reputation was that of a quirkless, timid outcast. His childhood bully, Katsuki Bakugo, gave him the name "Deku," meaning "useless" or "one who can't do anything". As he struggles to control One For All, Midoriya is often seen crying due to stress or emotion. This, combined with his initial lack of control over his immense power, led some to see him as emotionally fragile or a "crybaby".
However, Midoriya quickly earns a reputation for his indomitable will and selfless bravery, often putting his body and life on the line for others. His determination and readiness to go beyond his limits earn the respect of his classmates. His incredible growth from a powerless boy into a competent hero makes him an inspirational figure for his peers, including those he directly saves, like Kota Izumi and Eri.
During the period after the Paranormal Liberation War, when he operates alone, Midoriya's reputation among villains grows. The immense power of One For All and his grim determination make him a terrifying figure to his enemies, who now see him as a "monster". In the end, he becomes known not just as a top-ranked hero but as the true successor to All Might, the hero who saved the world from All For One. His final act of self-sacrifice cements his status as a heroic legend, with the public regarding him as the "world's greatest hero" despite his final ranking.
