Who Is Sasha Braus?

Sasha Braus (also spelled Sasha Blouse in the manga) is a major supporting character in the anime and manga series Attack on Titan. She is a highly skilled soldier who graduates 9th in the 104th Training Corps and later joins the Survey Corps (Scout Regiment) alongside main characters like Eren Jaeger, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert.

Appearance

Sasha Braus from Attack on Titan is a young woman of average height and a slender, athletic physique, despite her famously large appetite. Her appearance evolves significantly over two distinct phases of the series: her early years as a cadet and scout, and her appearance following the four-year time skip in Season 4. 

Sasha’s early appearance (ages 16 to 19) included reddish-brown hair pulled into a ponytail that rests at the base of her neck, slightly parted bangs that cascaded down the sides of her face to her mid-neck, and large, light brown or amber-colored eyes. She stands at 168 cm (5'6") and weighs roughly 55 kg (121 lbs).

On active duty, she wears the traditional Scout Regiment uniform: a short brown jacket over a light gray button-down shirt, a white sash around her waist, white trousers, dark brown leather boots, and omni-directional mobility gear strapping. When off-duty, Sasha typically dresses in a simple, long-sleeved blouse paired with a long skirt that falls over her boots, occasionally layering with a sleeveless vest. 

During her later appearances (age 20) she stands noticeably taller and leaner. Her hair is cut significantly shorter, though still tied back, and her center-parted bangs have grown out longer, exposing more of her mature facial structure. During the raid on Liberio, Sasha trades her brown uniform for the sleek, pitch-black Scout Regiment tactical armor. This ensemble features support belts for her updated anti-personnel ODM gear and a dark brown bandolier carrying ammunition clips for her sniper rifle.

In Attack on Titan, Sasha Braus is best known as a friendly, fun-loving, and eccentric comic relief character who possesses an insatiable, borderline obsessive appetite for food. Affectionately nicknamed "Potato Girl" by her peers, her goofy exterior masks a deeply complex, incredibly sharp, and courageous soldier. 

Eating provides Sasha with supreme gratification and stress relief. She hoards, steals, and hides food compulsively. Her intense attachment to food stems from her childhood in Dauper Village, where a scarcity of wildlife made hunting and finding food a constant struggle. 

Sasha initially hid her country roots by speaking in an exaggeratedly formal manner to cover up her regional accent. In her youth, Sasha was narrow-minded and selfish, resenting the influx of Wall Maria refugees who hunted in her village's forests. Through her military service, she shed this isolationist mindset to become a deeply empathetic and selfless comrade. 

Raised as a hunter, Sasha possesses incredibly sharp intuition, hyper-focused environmental awareness, and a keen sense of impending danger. Though initially prone to panicking under stress, Sasha grew remarkably level-headed and brave, famously saving a young girl from a Titan using only a bow and arrow.

Background

Sasha Braus originated from Dauper Village, a remote, low-population hunting community located in the mountain forests of southern Wall Rose. Her backstory centers around her deep-rooted hunting traditions, a massive ideological clash with her father, and the societal ripple effects caused by the fall of Wall Maria. 

Sasha was raised by her father, Artur Braus, to live strictly off the land. Through this upbringing, she developed highly advanced animal-like tracking instincts, incredible hearing, and elite archery skills. However, this isolated lifestyle also made her initial personality quite narrow-minded, selfish, and deeply territorial over food. She deeply feared and avoided outsiders. 

In the year 845, Wall Maria fell to the Titans, forcing hundreds of thousands of refugees to flee inward into Wall Rose. The massive influx of people triggered a severe food shortage across the remaining human territory. Government officials pushed for the surrounding forests to be cleared for agricultural farming to sustain the population. This shift directly threatened Dauper Village's traditional way of life.

Artur Braus argued that the world had changed, and they needed to give up hunting to share the forest, take up horse farming, and help the refugees, but Sasha fiercely opposed this change, throwing a tantrum and arguing that they owed nothing to outsiders who were ruining their hunting grounds. 

Unable to accept her father's changing ideals and wanting to escape the shifting reality of her home, Sasha left Dauper Village in 847 to enlist in the 104th Cadet Corps. Even after joining the military, her rural upbringing heavily influenced her behavior. 

She suffered from deep insecurity regarding her thick country accent, choosing to speak in an overly polite, formal tone to hide it from her peers. Her intense food scarcity anxiety also followed her, famously leading her to steal a hot potato on her very first day of training, cementing her iconic nickname, "Potato Girl".

Sasha Braus does not possess supernatural powers or Titan Shifting abilities, but she is an exceptionally skilled human soldier whose capabilities are rooted in her upbringing as a traditional hunter from the Dauper village. Early on, Sasha is driven solely by her home village's survival. She resists giving up traditional hunting lands to refugees from Wall Maria, focusing strictly on protecting her lifestyle.

Her initial motivation for joining the military is heavily tied to finding food. Her dream is to reclaim Wall Maria so humanity can expand its cattle farming and agriculture, ensuring she can eat meat again. 

Urged by her father to see the "bigger world," Sasha's ultimate character goal shifts. She leaves her insular mindset behind, learning to connect with outsiders, make friends, and fight for people who cannot fight for themselves. In the final arcs, Sasha's goal transitions to pure defensive duty. Even amidst the brutal war with Marley, she maintains a goal of minimizing innocent casualties, refusing to shoot civilian children. 

Sasha has a dual reputation in the series functioning as a hilarious source of comic relief to her peers, while also being an extraordinarily capable, high-performing asset to the military. On her first day in the 104th Training Corps, Keith Shadis catches Sasha eating a stolen potato during a solemn military ritual. This earns her a permanent, endearing nickname and a reputation as a clumsy, eccentric food hoarder.
