Mikasa Ackerman is one of the main protagonists of the anime and manga series Attack on Titan. Known for her immense strength and unwavering loyalty, she is a member of the elite Survey Corps who fights against giant, humanoid creatures known as Titans. Her quiet demeanor is balanced by her extraordinary fighting ability, making her a dangerous and deadly opponent, especially when protecting those she cares about.

Appearance

Mikasa Ackerman has shaggy black hair and gray eyes, is of Asian heritage, and possesses a well-toned physique. She is often seen wearing the iconic red scarf given to her by Eren, her signature garment. Her black hair was originally long but was cut to chin-length at Eren's suggestion and later to the nape of her neck. By year 857, it grew long again and was tied in a ponytail.

Mikasa frequently wears the original Survey Corps uniform, complete with the green cape featuring the "Wings of Freedom". Off-duty, she may wear a simple white dress with a light cardigan, brown boots, and her scarf. She bears a tattoo of the Azumabito family crest on her right wrist and a small scar under her right eye.

Over the course of the series, Mikasa grows to care for her other comrades and expands her worldview beyond just Eren and Armin. In the final arc, she makes the heartbreaking but necessary choice to stop Eren to save the world, completing her journey of self-discovery.

Background

Mikasa had a peaceful childhood until she was nine years old, when human traffickers murdered her parents. Eren Jaeger rescued her from the traffickers and gave her his scarf, which she wears as a symbol of their bond. She was taken in by Eren and his family, becoming his adoptive sister. After the Colossal Titan breaks down Wall Maria and Eren's mother is eaten, Mikasa follows Eren in joining the military. 

Mikasa is a distant relative of Captain Levi Ackerman, as they share the Ackerman bloodline. Levi is older, and they do not have a close relationship, but they both experienced a similar "awakening" of their powers. This makes her one of the most powerful human soldiers, second only to Levi. Her mother's family, the Azumabito clan, is a line of nobles from the nation of Hizuru who remained on Paradis Island. This heritage gives Mikasa political significance.

While many fans interpret Mikasa's feelings for Eren as romantic, her overprotective nature and their adoptive sibling relationship can complicate the dynamic. Eren's actions eventually put them at odds. Mikasa is the one who ultimately kills Eren in the finale. After his death, she buries him and continues to visit his grave throughout her life, still wearing the scarf he gave her.

After Eren initiates the Rumbling, Mikasa's goal shifts from protecting him to protecting humanity from him. She joins the Alliance to stop the global genocide, accepting the painful reality that she must confront Eren.

In the end, Mikasa makes the ultimate choice to kill Eren, which puts a stop to the Rumbling and releases Ymir Fritz's curse on the world. This act effectively ends the era of the Titans. After Eren's death, Mikasa finally achieves a more independent sense of self. She continues to honor his memory but builds her own life, choosing to live peacefully.
