Mikasa Ackerman is one of the main protagonists of the anime and manga series Attack on Titan. Known for her immense strength and unwavering loyalty, she is a member of the elite Survey Corps who fights against giant, humanoid creatures known as Titans. Her quiet demeanor is balanced by her extraordinary fighting ability, making her a dangerous and deadly opponent, especially when protecting those she cares about.

Appearance
Mikasa Ackerman has shaggy black hair and gray eyes, is of Asian heritage, and possesses a well-toned physique. She is often seen wearing the iconic red scarf given to her by Eren, her signature garment. Her black hair was originally long but was cut to chin-length at Eren's suggestion and later to the nape of her neck. By year 857, it grew long again and was tied in a ponytail.
Mikasa frequently wears the original Survey Corps uniform, complete with the green cape featuring the "Wings of Freedom". Off-duty, she may wear a simple white dress with a light cardigan, brown boots, and her scarf. She bears a tattoo of the Azumabito family crest on her right wrist and a small scar under her right eye.
Personality
Mikasa Ackerman is defined by her quiet, stoic, and loyal personality, a stark contrast to her cheerful and outgoing childhood self before the trauma of her parents' murder. Her life's core is Eren, and she demonstrates an iron resolve, emotional detachment, and immense strength in protecting him and her friends. Though she often seems withdrawn, her fierce protectiveness and unwavering will are central to her character.
She is particularly protective of Eren, her most important relationship, and initially joins the military simply to watch over him. Her devotion can sometimes cause her emotions to override her judgment. Over the course of the series, Mikasa grows to care for her other comrades and expands her worldview beyond just Eren and Armin. In the final arc, she makes the heartbreaking but necessary choice to stop Eren to save the world, completing her journey of self-discovery.
Background
Mikasa had a peaceful childhood until she was nine years old, when human traffickers murdered her parents. Eren Jaeger rescued her from the traffickers and gave her his scarf, which she wears as a symbol of their bond. She was taken in by Eren and his family, becoming his adoptive sister. After the Colossal Titan breaks down Wall Maria and Eren's mother is eaten, Mikasa follows Eren in joining the military.
Mikasa is a distant relative of Captain Levi Ackerman, as they share the Ackerman bloodline. Levi is older, and they do not have a close relationship, but they both experienced a similar "awakening" of their powers. This makes her one of the most powerful human soldiers, second only to Levi. Her mother's family, the Azumabito clan, is a line of nobles from the nation of Hizuru who remained on Paradis Island. This heritage gives Mikasa political significance.
While many fans interpret Mikasa's feelings for Eren as romantic, her overprotective nature and their adoptive sibling relationship can complicate the dynamic. Eren's actions eventually put them at odds. Mikasa is the one who ultimately kills Eren in the finale. After his death, she buries him and continues to visit his grave throughout her life, still wearing the scarf he gave her.
Powers and Abilities
Mikasa Ackerman's enhanced abilities stem from her bloodline, specifically the "awakened power" of the Ackerman clan. Unlike most Eldians, Ackermans are the byproducts of "Titan science" and have superhuman physical traits without the ability to transform into Titans. In addition, Mikasa's natural talent is amplified by her Ackerman abilities, making her a devastatingly effective soldier.
Though exceptionally powerful, Mikasa has a unique vulnerability: Her devotion to Eren. Her emotional ties to him can cloud her judgment and lead to reckless decisions. After Eren's death, she experiences a severe mental and emotional collapse.
Combat Abilities
Expert Swordsmanship: Her proficiency with blades is unmatched among her peers, allowing her to single-handedly take down many Titans with precision.
High Durability and Endurance: As part of her enhanced physical attributes, Mikasa has shown an incredible capacity to withstand and recover from severe injuries.
Proficient with Thunder Spears: Despite their complexity and power, she mastered the use of Thunder Spears quickly and with deadly accuracy.
Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) Gear Proficiency: Mikasa is ranked first in her cadet class and is praised as a military genius. She is an expert at using the Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) Gear, allowing her to take down Titans with incredible speed and efficiency.
Awakened Powers
Mikasa's powers manifested during a life-threatening moment as a child when she killed a kidnapper to save Eren Jaeger. This event unlocked her dormant abilities. Additionally, due to their origin and unique physiology, Ackermans possess several immunities and resistances related to Titans.
Enhanced Strength: She is capable of overpowering individuals much larger than her, such as lifting heavy equipment and tossing fully grown men with ease.
Enhanced Agility and Speed: Her movement and reaction times are significantly faster than those of an average human, allowing her to be an incredibly effective soldier.
Extraordinary Combat Instinct: This is described as "knowing exactly what needed to be done" during a fight. The awakening gives her perfect self-control over her body and access to the battle experiences of all previous Ackermans through the metaphysical realm of the Paths.
No Titan Transformation: They are unable to be forcibly turned into Pure Titans, unlike other Subjects of Ymir.
Immunity to Memory Alteration: Members of the Ackerman clan are immune to the Founding Titan's power to alter or erase their memories. This is because the Founding Titan's influence over the Subjects of Ymir is not fully effective on them.
Goals and Reputation
Mikasa Ackerman's primary goal is to protect Eren Jaeger, her adoptive brother, which drives her actions and motivations throughout the story. Her reputation is that of a military genius and exceptionally skilled soldier, known for her physical strength, speed, and effectiveness in fighting Titans.
She is seen as a formidable, almost unparalleled, force on the battlefield, earning the respect and sometimes fear of her peers, though her singular focus on Eren can sometimes lead her to be seen as emotionally detached from the wider mission to save humanity.
However, Mikasa's deepest desire is to live a peaceful life with Eren and Armin. It is this wish that motivates her to enlist in the military, but it is ultimately a dream she must sacrifice. After Eren initiates the Rumbling, Mikasa's goal shifts from protecting him to protecting humanity from him. She joins the Alliance to stop the global genocide, accepting the painful reality that she must confront Eren.
In the end, Mikasa makes the ultimate choice to kill Eren, which puts a stop to the Rumbling and releases Ymir Fritz's curse on the world. This act effectively ends the era of the Titans. After Eren's death, Mikasa finally achieves a more independent sense of self. She continues to honor his memory but builds her own life, choosing to live peacefully.
