The official rules governing the Death Note span over 100 canonical entries across the original franchise. They dictate how names are written, the parameters of death, and the conditions of ownership.

The Core Rules (How to Use It)
The Basic Function: The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
Visual Requirement: The note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind. This prevents people with the same name from being affected.
Default Cause: If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
Timing for Cause: The cause of death must be written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name.
Timing for Details: Physical details and specific conditions of the death must be written within the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Shinigami and Ownership Rules
The Shinigami Eyes: A human owner can trade half of their remaining lifespan to get Shinigami eyes. This allows them to see any human’s name and lifespan just by looking at them.
Haunting: The human owner will be accompanied/possessed by the original Shinigami owner until they die.
Perception: Anyone who touches the Death Note can see and hear the Shinigami, even if they aren't the notebook's owner.
The Afterlife: The human who uses this note can go to neither Heaven nor Hell. Upon death, they enter Mu (Nothingness).
Memory Forfeiture: If you give up ownership of the notebook, you lose all memories of using it. Touching it again restores your memory. This memory recovery loop can only happen up to 6 times.

Constraints and Limitations
Age Limits: The Death Note will not affect those under 780 days old or individuals 124 years of age or older.
Remaining Life: You cannot kill a human who has less than 12 minutes of life remaining.
No Collateral Damage: If a specified cause of death or suicide would directly cause the death of other people whose names aren't written, the victim defaults to a heart attack instead.
Lifespan Limit: You cannot set a date of death that exceeds the victim's original natural lifespan.
Infinite Pages: The pages of the Death Note will never run out.

Spelling and Execution Formatting
Accidental Misspelling: If a name is accidentally misspelled 4 times, that victim becomes completely immune to that specific Death Note.
Intentional Misspelling: If the owner intentionally misspells a name 4 times to grant someone immunity, the owner will instantly die instead.
Page Splitting: A name must be written on the same physical page to work. However, the front and back of a sheet count as one page (e.g., first name on the front, last name on the back works).
Erasure: It is completely useless to erase or use white-out on names; once written, the death cannot be canceled.
Conflicting Entries: If the same name is written in two different Death Notes, the one written first takes effect. If written within 0.06 seconds of each other, it is considered simultaneous, the entries cancel out, and the victim lives.

The Fake Rules (Light's Trick)
To throw off the investigation, Light Yagami forced a Shinigami to write two entirely fake rules into the notebook:
The 13-Day Rule: If the human user does not write a new name within 13 days of the last entry, they will die.
The Destruction Rule: If the notebook is rendered useless by being burned or torn up, everyone who has ever touched it will die.
