Appearance

Zenitsu Agatsuma from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is recognizable by his bright yellow-to-orange hair and his iconic triangle-patterned yellow haori. He is a teenage boy of average height (164.5 cm) with a muscular build beneath his baggy clothing.

He sports a short, choppy bowl cut with uneven bangs framing his face. The ends of his hair are cut completely square. His hair is bright yellow and fades into a dark orange color at the tips. Originally, Zenitsu had black hair, but it permanently changed color after he was struck by lightning while hiding in a tree during his training. He has downward-sloped, worried-looking eyes that fade from a soft brown to a brilliant gold, and his eyebrows are thick, golden, and forked, sharply fading into a warm orange tint.

Zenitsu is usually drawn with a panicked, crying, or highly expressive terrified face. However, when he falls asleep or passes out to fight using his unconscious combat style, his facial expression instantly changes to become calm, serious, and sharp. His most defining piece of clothing is a bright yellow-and-orange gradient haori (traditional jacket) covered in a white triangle pattern.

Beneath his haori, he wears a slightly paler brown version of the standard Demon Slayer Corps Uniform. This includes a dark brown button-up jacket, a white belt, and extended tattsuke-hakama pants. He wraps his lower legs in kyahan leggings) that match the exact yellow-and-white triangle pattern of his haori, secured by three white bows. On his feet, he wears pale brown tabi socks and white-laced zōri sandals. He carries a standard Nichirin Katana featuring a lightning bolt motif running down the length of the blade, paired with a silver, circular handguard.

Personality

Zenitsu has a deeply layered personality characterized by intense cowardice and low self-esteem on the surface, which masks an underlying core of immense talent, loyalty, and protective instinct. While he is often remembered for his loud, frantic breakdowns, his character undergoes a dramatic psychological evolution throughout the series.

Zenitsu is in a near-constant state of fear, regularly crying, screaming, and attempting to flee from danger. He views the profession of a Demon Slayer as a death sentence and actively laments his mortality. He frequently speaks self-deprecatingly, believing himself to be entirely useless and a burden to his teammates. This stems from a rough upbringing where he was constantly berated and abandoned.

Driven by an intense fear of dying alone, Zenitsu aggressively hits on cute girls and begs them to marry him. Despite this desperate behavior, he seeks genuine affection rather than casual flings, later focusing all his devotion entirely on Nezuko Kamado. Having grown up in an urban city, Zenitsu possesses a sharper understanding of modern civilization compared to his rural companions, Tanjiro and Inosuke. He is often the "straight man" of the trio, easily annoyed by his friends' lack of common sense, such as their inability to recognize a train.

When Zenitsu's terror reaches an absolute breaking point, his nervous system shuts down, causing him to pass out or fall asleep. While unconscious, his anxieties disappear. His mind enters a state of pure instinct and muscle memory, allowing him to execute his Thunder Breathing forms with flawless precision, speed, and lethality. Because he has no memory of these events upon waking up, he remains falsely convinced that he is weak and that someone else saved him.

Despite his constant whining, Zenitsu possesses core values that highlight his true nobility. He holds an immense sense of duty to his master, Jigoro Kuwajima, who saved him from financial ruin and refused to give up on him. Even when wide awake and terrified, Zenitsu will actively shield others if pushed. He famously let himself be beaten up by Inosuke to protect Tanjiro's box (which contained Nezuko), purely because Tanjiro said the box was more important to him than his own life.

Later in the manga and anime, upon learning of a personal tragedy involving his master and his former senior, Kaigaku, Zenitsu drops his cowardly demeanor completely. He achieves true psychological maturity, remaining completely awake, stern, and focused on his duty without needing to fall asleep to fight.

Background

Zenitsu was an orphaned baby abandoned by his mother, leaving him to grow up in the city without parental guidance or a proper sense of belonging. His lack of a traditional family foundation made him desperate for affection and obsessed with finding a wife to ensure he would not die alone.

As a teenager, Zenitsu fell deeply in love with a girl. Hoping to win her affection, he gave her large sums of money. Instead of returning his feelings, she swindled him and ran away with another man, leaving Zenitsu drowning in massive debt. When debt collectors came to corner him, Jigoro Kuwajima, the former Thunder Hashira, stepped in. Jigoro paid off Zenitsu’s financial debt completely. In exchange, he took the young boy to the countryside to train him as his successor in swordsmanship.

Zenitsu formed a deep, emotional connection with Jigoro, affectionately calling him "Gramps". Gramps treated him like a grandson, which provided Zenitsu with the paternal figure he had craved his entire life. However, the physical training was brutal. Out of fear of being worked to death, Zenitsu frequently tried to escape.

During one of his panic-induced escapes, Zenitsu climbed up a tree to hide from his master. While he was stuck in the tree during a sudden storm, a rogue bolt of lightning struck him. Miraculously, he survived, but the electrical shock permanently bleached his naturally black hair and eyebrows into his iconic bright blonde/yellow color.

While studying under Jigoro, Zenitsu trained alongside a senior disciple named Kaigaku. Kaigaku openly despised Zenitsu, constantly bullying him and mocking his perpetual cowardice. Despite Jigoro's relentless efforts, Zenitsu was only capable of mastering the very first form of Thunder Breathing: Thunderclap and Flash. Conversely, Kaigaku mastered forms two through six but could never grasp the first form.

Jigoro wanted them to become joint successors to his legacy. Although Kaigaku despised being paired with someone he deemed worthless, Zenitsu actually deeply respected Kaigaku's ambition and genuinely wished to fight alongside him as an equal.

Powers and Abilities

Zenitsu Agatsuma is an exceptionally powerful combatant in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, relying on subconscious battle instincts, superhuman speed, and unparalleled mastery of a single swordsmanship technique. Despite his intense cowardice while conscious, he becomes a lethal force when pushed past his emotional limits.

Innate Physical Abilities

In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, innate physical abilities refer to the supernatural biological gifts that characters are born with, entirely independent of training or skills they learn later in life.

  • Unconscious Combat: Fear and shock cause Zenitsu to pass out when his life is threatened. In this meditative, sleeping state, his conscious anxieties disappear, allowing him to fight purely on high-level instinct, tactical genius, and flawless muscle memory.

  • Enhanced Hearing: Zenitsu has a superhuman sense of hearing that allows him to navigate and fight effectively in total pitch darkness or while asleep. He can isolate specific layers of sound, read human emotions, predict attacks, and easily distinguish a human from a demon by the unique cadence of their heartbeat.

Breathing Styles

In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Breathing Styles are unique swordsmanship techniques used by the Demon Slayer Corps. By controlling their breathing, demon slayers increase oxygen flow to the blood, unlocking superhuman strength, speed, and durability to fight demons.

  • Thunder Breathing: Taught by the former Thunder Hashira, Jigoro Kuwajima, Zenitsu was only ever capable of learning the very first form of Thunder Breathing. However, he honed this single quick-draw technique (Iaijutsu) to absolute perfection, altering it into several variations.

Combat and Other Skills

Demon Slayers primarily rely on their swordsmanship, but they also use physical enhancements and special gear to fight demons. These skills include Total Concentration for superhuman strength, the Transparent World to see an enemy's muscles, and unique gadgets like Wisteria poisons and customized weapons.

  • First Form: Thunderclap and Flash: The foundation of his fighting style. Zenitsu channels immense power into his legs, dashes forward at blinding, hypersonic speed, and decapitates his opponent in a single draw-and-sheathe motion before they can react.

  • Sixfold, Eightfold, and Fold Extensions: Zenitsu developed the ability to chain his dash repeatedly in rapid succession. He can execute a flurry of six strikes (Sixfold) or eight strikes (Eightfold) to blitz a target from multiple directions.

  • God Speed: An upgraded extension of Thunderclap and Flash that radically augments his speed to near-instantaneous levels. Initially, using this technique more than twice a day would shatter the bones and muscles in his legs, rendering them useless. By the final battle, his physical conditioning allowed him to exceed this limit.

  • Seventh Form: Flaming Thunder God: Created entirely by Zenitsu himself, this unique technique was formulated so he could fight on equal footing with his former senior disciple, Kaigaku. Zenitsu launches a low-stance forward dash at speeds far exceeding God Speed, accompanied by the visual projection of a roaring dragon made of yellow lightning. It strikes so quickly that even an Upper Rank Demon cannot track its trajectory.

  • Total Concentration Breathing (Constant): By mastering the ability to maintain Total Concentration Breathing 24/7, Zenitsu radically increases his heart rate, internal body temperature, and physical power. This grants him physical capabilities on par with high-ranking demons.

Goals and Reputation

Zenitsu is one of the main protagonists in the anime and manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. His journey is defined by a stark contrast between his crippling cowardice and his extraordinary, subconscious combat abilities. While Zenitsu does not start with the lofty, heroic ambitions of his peers, his motivations evolve significantly throughout the series.

Initially, Zenitsu's primary goal is simply to survive. He never wanted to become a Demon Slayer and was forced into it to pay off a debt. He constantly craves a peaceful, ordinary life away from danger. Driven by an intense fear of dying alone on a mission, Zenitsu is obsessed with marrying a girl. He frequently clings to women he meets, though his perspective shifts into genuine, protective devotion after falling in love with Nezuko Kamado.

Zenitsu's core narrative goal completely shifts following the suicide of his mentor, Jigoro Kuwajima (the former Thunder Hashira). Jigoro killed himself because Zenitsu's senior co-disciple, Kaigaku, betrayed the Demon Slayer Corps to become a demon. Zenitsu makes it his ultimate, conscious mission to avenge his master and slay Kaigaku.

Recognizing his limitations, Zenitsu aims to perfect the only form of Thunder Breathing he knows, the First Form: Thunderclap and Flash. His goal transitions from running away to refining this single strike into an unstoppable, god-like technique.

Zenitsu’s reputation is deeply split between how he is perceived when he is awake versus how he is viewed when he is asleep or pushed to his limits. To his peers like Tanjiro Kamado and Inosuke Hashibira, as well as various onlookers, Zenitsu is initially viewed as a whiny, pessimistic, and high-strung coward. He screams, cries, and begs to avoid missions, which often exhausts or annoys those around him.

When his fear causes him to pass out, Zenitsu's subconscious mind takes over, transforming him into a lethal, blindingly fast swordsman. Those who witness this state view him with absolute awe, as he can decapitate powerful demons in a single, imperceptible blink. To his master, Jigoro, Zenitsu was not a failure despite only learning one form. Jigoro viewed him as a diamond in the rough and fiercely believed that mastering one thing completely was a sign of true greatness.

By the end of the series, Zenitsu earns the deep respect of the entire Demon Slayer Corps. By conquering his fears while fully awake to fight Upper Moon demons, he sheds his reputation as a coward and is recognized as a true, pillars-level swordsman.
