Sabo is a major character in the One Piece manga and anime series. He is the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army, serving as the second-in-command to Monkey D. Dragon, and is the sworn brother of Monkey D. Luffy and the late Portgas D. Ace. Known globally as the Flame Emperor, he has a bounty of 602,000,000 Berries and is considered one of the greatest threats to the World Government.

Appearance
Sabo’s appearance in One Piece is defined by his signature noble-turned-revolutionary style, which has remained remarkably consistent from his childhood into adulthood. At age 10, Sabo already sported his characteristic top hat and goggles. He had short, curly blond hair and was notably missing a front tooth. He wore a blue jacket with rolled-up sleeves, a cravat, and cyan-colored shorts.
As an adult and the Revolutionary Army's Chief of Staff, the 22-year-old Sabo is a tall, muscular man standing at 187 cm (6'1"). He has curly blond hair (kept long to cover a scar) and a large, jagged burn scar over his left eye, sustained during the Celestial Dragon attack in his youth.
Sabo wears a black top hat with a blue ribbon and a pair of cyan-tinted goggles wrapped around the base, as well as a long black trench coat with a buckle on the left sleeve, worn over a blue vest and shirt. He also wears a white frilled cravat around his neck, loose, light-blue trousers held by a simple belt, tucked into black leather boots, and brown gloves, while carrying his iconic weapon, a simple metal pipe.
Personality
Sabo is defined by his deep-seated desire for freedom, a fierce protectiveness over his brother Luffy, and a profound hatred for the world's nobility. While he shares the reckless and determined spirit of his brothers Ace and Luffy, he is often seen as the most pragmatic and polite of the trio.
Despite his own noble birth, Sabo despised the high-society lifestyle in the Goa Kingdom, famously stating that the nobles "smell worse than Trash Mountain". This disdain for inequality drove him to join the Revolutionary Army to actively fight against the World Government. Since regaining his memories after Ace's death, Sabo has developed an intense protective streak toward Luffy. He is willing to abandon his immediate duties if he feels Luffy is in danger, a direct result of his regret over not being there to save Ace.
Unlike the "brute force" approach often taken by Ace, Sabo is more calculated and methodical in battle. He prefers to destroy an opponent's weapons or infrastructure—such as the Corrida Colosseum arena—before engaging them directly. To his allies, he is generally polite, encouraging, and kind. However, he has quirky habits that annoy his comrades, such as frequently hanging up the Den Den Mushi mid-conversation or mispronouncing names—a trait he likely picked up from Luffy.
Despite his maturity, he remains a "hothead" who will impulsively engage high-level threats like Marine Admirals without a formal plan if he believes it serves the greater good or protects his family.
Background
Sabo’s backstory is a tale of a young noble who rejected his high-status life in search of true freedom, leading him to become the sworn brother of Monkey D. Luffy and Portgas D. Ace. Sabo was born to Outlook III and Didit, high-ranking nobles in the Goa Kingdom on Dawn Island. His parents valued social status over their son, viewing him only as a tool to secure their lineage. Disgusted by their elitist and cruel nature, Sabo ran away at a young age to live in the Gray Terminal, a massive junkyard outside the kingdom’s walls.
In the Gray Terminal, he met Ace and later Luffy. The three became inseparable, training together and saving money to one day become pirates. They eventually shared a cup of sake, swearing an oath to be brothers forever. However, Sabo’s father eventually found him and used the Bluejam Pirates to threaten Ace and Luffy, forcing Sabo to return home.
While confined, Sabo learned of a horrific plan by the nobles to burn down the Gray Terminal (and everyone in it) to "cleanse" the area before a World Noble’s visit. He tried to stop it but was powerless. Driven by a desperate need for freedom, Sabo set sail on a small fishing boat at age 10. However, his path crossed with the ship of a World Noble (Saint Jalmack), who found it offensive for a "commoner" to be in his way and blew Sabo's boat out of the water.
Sabo was presumed dead by his brothers, but he was actually rescued from the wreckage by Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy’s father, though, the trauma of the attack caused Sabo to lose all his memories. He spent the next 12 years rising through the ranks of the Revolutionary Army, eventually becoming its Chief of Staff (the No. 2 member).
Sabo’s memories only returned when he saw a newspaper report about the death of Ace at Marineford. The shock of seeing his brother's name and face broke the mental block, causing him to fall into a coma before resolving to protect his remaining brother, Luffy. He eventually reunited with Luffy during the Dressrosa Arc, where he won and ate Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit) to carry on his brother’s legacy.
Powers and Abilities
Sabo is one of the most powerful fighters in the One Piece world, serving as the Chief of Staff (No. 2) of the Revolutionary Army. His strength is built on a foundation of elite martial arts and Haki, a foundation which he later enhanced by consuming his late brother Ace's Devil Fruit.
Devil Fruit
Sabo is the current user of the Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit), a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control, and transform his body into fire. He inherited this power by eating the fruit during the Dressrosa Arc after the death of its previous owner, his sworn brother Portgas D. Ace.
Core Flame Flame Fruit Abilities
Intangibility: As a Logia user, physical attacks (like swords or bullets) pass harmlessly through Sabo's fiery body unless the attacker uses Armament Haki or exploits his elemental weakness.
Fire Generation & Manipulation: Sabo can generate massive amounts of flames from any part of his body or his signature metal pipe to incinerate enemies.
Flight/Propulsion: He can use fire to propel himself through the air or increase the speed and impact of his physical strikes.
Signature Techniques
Sabo combines his fire powers with his existing Ryusoken (Dragon Claw Fist) martial arts style.
Hiken (Fire Fist): Inherited from Ace, Sabo launches a massive column of fire from his fist. He first used this to shatter the entire floor of the Corrida Colosseum.
Moeru Ryusoken: Kaen Ryuo (Burning Dragon Claw Fist: Fire Flame Dragon King): Sabo coats his "claws" in Haki and ignites them, spinning his opponent before blasting them away with a burst of fire.
Flaming Pipe: Sabo frequently channels his flames through his metal pipe, imbuing his staff strikes with intense heat.
Otebisha (Rook Check): A tactical move where he shoots a stream of fire with one hand while attacking with the other, effectively "checking" multiple targets at once.
Ryusoken (Dragon Claw Fist)
Sabo is a master of this unique martial art, which focuses on using the fingers as "claws" to grip and crush targets with immense force.
Dragon's Claw: Sabo forms his hand into a three-fingered claw. This grip is strong enough to snap high-grade steel swords, shatter heavy armor, and even crush human skulls with ease.
Dragon's Breath: By imbuing both fists with Haki and slamming them into the ground, Sabo can find the "core" of a structure and trigger a massive, floor-shattering shockwave. He used this to destroy the entire Corrida Colosseum arena.
Stick Fighting (Pipe Combat): Since childhood, Sabo’s signature weapon has been a simple metal pipe. He uses it as a bo-staff, extending his reach and delivering heavy blunt-force trauma. Even as an adult, he continues to use it, often reinforcing it with Haki to clash evenly with top-tier opponents like Admiral Fujitora.
Haki
Sabo is a highly proficient Haki user, specializing in Armament Haki and Observation Haki. He has notably demonstrated advanced applications of Armament Haki that allow him to destroy targets from the inside out.
Armament Haki: Creates an armor-like force that strengthens attacks and defenses, allowing armament haki users to harm Devil Fruit users and ignore their powers. Sabo’s mastery of Armament Haki is his primary combat strength, often used in conjunction with his Ryusoken (Dragon Claw Fist) martial arts. His Haki is strong enough to shatter Burgess's Haki-infused armor and completely destroy Vice-Admiral Bastille's heavy sword and steel mask.
Observation Haki: Gives individuals a sixth sense that allows them to perceive and predict their opponent's movements. In its advanced form, they can see moments into the future. Sabo is a confirmed user of Observation Haki, which he uses to sense presences and predict incoming attacks. He has been shown easily dodging gunfire and sensing the fading life force or Haki of others, such as when he detected Luffy's exhaustion during the Dressrosa arc.
Conqueror's Haki: A rare form of Haki that allows individuals to knock out those with weak wills. With advanced control, conqueror’s Haki users can coat their body with this Haki to further enhance their attacks. While both of his brothers, Ace and Luffy, were born with this rare ability, it has not yet been officially manifested or confirmed for Sabo in the manga or databooks.
Goals and Reputation
Sabo is known worldwide as the Chief of Staff of the Revolutionary Army. He is driven by a deep-seated desire for world freedom and a fierce devotion to his sworn brothers. As the "Number 2" of the entire organization, he is one of the most influential and feared individuals in the One Piece world.
Sabo's motivations have evolved from a child's dream of escape to a revolutionary's mission to reshape the world. His primary objective is to overthrow the corrupt World Nobles (Celestial Dragons) and the systemic inequality they perpetuate. Though, following the death of their brother Ace, Sabo is intensely protective of Luffy. He has stated he will drop everything, including his revolutionary duties, to ensure Luffy's safety.
By consuming the Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit), Sabo took on Ace's power and will, vowing to live out the life Ace lost. Across the globe, Sabo is viewed with a mixture of reverence and terror. Following the events at the Reverie, his notoriety skyrocketed. He is now worshipped like a god by some revolutionary nations, with his influence in some circles even surpassing that of Dragon.
The World Government considers him extremely dangerous, evidenced by his massive bounty of 602,000,000 Berries (before his "Flame Emperor" spike). Additionally, to much of the public, he is the man who assassinated King Nefertari Cobra of Arabasta. Although he was framed, he pragmatically accepted this reputation because it bolstered the Revolutionary Army's image as a force capable of toppling kings.
Sabo is also famous for his Ryusoken (Dragon Claw Fist) martial arts and his ability to hold his own against Marine Admirals, like Fujitora. Sabo maintains a strong but divisive reputation in the One Piece fanbase. While he consistently ranks in the top 10 of global popularity polls, a vocal segment of the community views him as a controversial writing choice due to seeing him as a replacement for Ace.
