Who Is Boa Hancock?

Boa Hancock, also known as the "Pirate Empress" and "Snake Princess," is a major character in the anime and manga series One Piece. As the empress of the all-female Amazon Lily and the captain of the Kuja Pirates, she was also the only female member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea before the organization was disbanded.

Appearance

Boa Hancock is a very tall and slender woman renowned as the most beautiful woman in the world. As the "Snake Princess" of the Kuja tribe, her physical appearance, distinct fashion, and expressions reflect her pride and dynamic personality. She is also almost always seen with her large snake companion, Salome.

Hancock has long, straight black hair that reaches past her waist. Locks of hair frame her face and fall to her chin. Her eyes are dark blue and have long, voluminous eyelashes. She has pale skin and possesses a curvaceous figure with a narrow waist and large breasts. Hancock is typically seen in traditional Kuja-style clothing, which often includes revealing designs.

Personality

Boa Hancock has a highly complex and contradictory personality, defined by her arrogant, ruthless demeanor and her hidden vulnerability stemming from a traumatic past. Her character shifts dramatically between her public-facing "Pirate Empress" facade and her genuine, compassionate inner self, which is only revealed to a select few.

For most people, Boa Hancock presents as a prideful and cold-hearted empress who believes her beauty excuses all transgressions. She is openly vain, using her beauty and Devil Fruit powers to manipulate nearly everyone around her into doing her bidding. Her introduction shows her kicking a kitten out of her way without a second thought. She has also petrified her own subjects for a minor infraction, highlighting a vindictive streak. She views most people, particularly men, with disdain and looks down on them—literally, by tilting her head back to gaze "down" at them.

The reason for her hardened exterior is revealed to be a profound trauma from her childhood. As a young girl, she and her sisters were enslaved for several years by the World Nobles, or Celestial Dragons, who forced her to eat the Love-Love Fruit for their entertainment among other implied actions. This harrowing experience instilled in her a deep hatred of the World Government and a fierce distrust of others, which she has tried to mask by never showing weakness.

Luffy is the catalyst for her transformation, causing her personality to perform a complete 180. His immunity to her charms and his genuine kindness and respect for her past cause her to fall madly in love with him. Her usual arrogance vanishes in his presence. She blushes and becomes shy, often daydreaming about marrying him, and can even be reduced to a flustered mess by a simple word from him.

Background

As a child, Hancock and her sisters were kidnapped and sold to the World Nobles, the arrogant rulers of the world. While enslaved, she was force-fed the Mero Mero no Mi Devil Fruit (Love-Love Fruit) as a form of twisted entertainment. To hide the slave brand on her back after their escape, she and her sisters concocted a tale that they were cursed by a Gorgon.

Her life changed after encountering Monkey D. Luffy, who was immune to her petrifying powers due to his simple-minded nature. She was initially enraged by this but was won over by his selflessness and bravery after he stood up for her and her sisters' secret. She falls deeply in love with him and becomes a staunch ally, repeatedly helping him throughout the series, though he does not return her romantic feelings.

After becoming one of Luffy's allies, Hancock assists him in sneaking into the underwater prison Impel Down to rescue his brother Ace. During the Marineford War, she fights on Luffy's side despite being a Warlord of the Sea, and later protects and hides him on Amazon Lily during the two-year time skip.

Powers and Abilities

Boa Hancock's powers and abilities stem from her immense physical strength, mastery of all three forms of Haki, and the unique petrification abilities of the Love-Love Fruit (Mero Mero no Mi). She is widely considered one of the most powerful female characters in the One Piece universe.

Physical Abilities

As the Empress of Amazon Lily, Hancock is the strongest warrior of the Kuja tribe, known for the "strength is beauty" philosophy.

  • Superhuman Strength: She possesses immense physical strength, capable of destroying multiple Pacifista cyborgs with her kicks and petrification powers.

  • Exceptional Speed and Agility: Hancock is extremely fast and agile, able to perform acrobatic combat moves despite wearing high heels.

  • Kicking-Based Fighting Style: Much like Sanji, her primary fighting style emphasizes versatile and powerful kicks.

  • Charm and Manipulation: Her beauty and confidence allow her to manipulate most people to her will. This has helped her get away with blatant wrongdoing and advance her goals.

  • Master Marksmanship: With techniques like Slave Arrow, she has shown great accuracy in long-range combat.

  • Companion Snake (Salome): Hancock is often accompanied by a large snake named Salome, which she uses as a throne. Salome also has the ability to track and sense objects underwater.

Haki

Hancock uses all three types of Haki known throughout the world of One Piece, and is actually one of the first confirmed Haki users in the series, alongside her two sisters, demonstrating her mastery when Luffy lands on Amazon Lily.

  • Armament Haki: Creates an armor-like force that strengthens attacks and defenses, allowing armament haki users to harm Devil Fruit users and ignore their powers.

  • Observation Haki: Gives individuals a sixth sense that allows them to perceive and predict their opponent's movements. In its advanced form, they can see moments into the future.

  • Conqueror's Haki: A rare form of Haki that allows individuals to knock out those with weak wills. With advanced control, conqueror’s Haki users can coat their body with this Haki to further enhance their attacks.

Devil Fruit

Hancock ate the Mero Mero no Mi (Love-Love Fruit), which was originally thought to allow her to petrify anyone who develops feelings of attraction or lust for her. However, Eiichiro Oda stated in an SBS (omake/Q&A section) that the Mero Mero no Mi's power depends on the dominant emotion a person feels towards the user, such as lust or admiration, not just attraction.

Therefore, if Blackbeard were to eat it, people's fear or disgust towards him would cause them to turn to stone. The effect of the petrification can be reversed by the fruit’s current user, but it is clearly stated that if the user dies, the petrified individuals will remain petrified forever, and even a new user of the fruit cannot undo the petrification. Though, the petrification ability manifests in different ways, with certain methods being more easily resisted than others.

Mero Mero Mellow (Love-Love Beam)

  • Affects Targets With "Impure Thoughts": This signature technique when used by Boa Hancock launches a heart-shaped beam that turns anyone with lustful or impure thoughts toward her into a stone statue.

  • Can Be Resisted: The petrification can be nullified if the target has no lust, finds the user unattractive, or is distracted by other intense emotions like fear or pain. For example, Vice-Admiral Momonga was able to resist by stabbing his own hand to focus on the pain.

  • Reversible: The petrified victims can be restored to normal by the user blowing a kiss at them, which releases a shower of small hearts.

Physical Combat

  • Affected Area is Petrified: By striking a target with a kick or another physical attack, the user can turn the area of contact into stone. This was used to petrify parts of a Pacifista and a Marine's sword, demonstrating that it can affect inorganic objects and those without emotion.

  • Cannot Be Fully Petrified: This method does not petrify the entire target like the beam attack does.

Slave Arrow

  • Unblockable Petrification: The user can fire a barrage of hundreds of heart-shaped arrows that petrify anything they strike, regardless of emotion, including Pacifistas.

  • Stops Objects Instantly: The arrows are powerful enough to stop inanimate objects like cannonballs mid-flight by turning them to stone.

Goals and Reputation

Boa Hancock's goals are driven by her immense love for Monkey D. Luffy, transforming from her initial aim to protect her homeland, Amazon Lily. She is renowned as the "Pirate Empress," feared and respected for her strength, beauty, and cunning, but also known for her arrogant and cruel demeanor. Her complex reputation is rooted in a traumatic past as a slave to the World Nobles.

Marrying Luffy is her overarching and most persistent goal. After Luffy showed her compassion and immunity to her charms, she fell deeply in love with him. Her romantic daydreams and fervent declarations that she will become his wife are a running gag in the series. Her love for Luffy also extends to a fiercely protective streak. She has repeatedly used her former status as a Warlord to aid him, including helping him infiltrate the maximum-security prison Impel Down and fighting on his side during the Summit War.

However, Hancock is also dedicated to protecting Amazon Lily and her people. In the past, as empress, Hancock joined the Seven Warlords of the Sea to form a protective treaty with the World Government. She did this to shield her people and prevent the World Government from learning about her shameful past as a slave. Following the abolishment of the Warlord system, she lost her protected status and became one of the most wanted criminals, with a bounty of 1,659,000,000 berries.
