Who Is Ais Wallenstein?

Ais Wallenstein (also spelled Aiz) is a central character and a first-class adventurer in the light novel and anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (DanMachi). Known widely by her alias Sword Princess (Kenki), she is the primary love interest of the protagonist, Bell Cranel, and the protagonist of the spin-off series Sword Oratoria. She is an executive and one of the strongest members of the Loki Familia, one of the two most powerful factions in Orario. Ais is currently a Level 6 adventurer. Before Bell Cranel broke the record, she held the title for the fastest person to reach Level 2, achieving it in just one year at age eight.

Appearance

Ais is described as an exceptionally beautiful woman with a "doll-like" appearance. She has long golden-blonde hair and striking gold eyes with a slender and petite frame, standing approximately 162 cm (5'4") tall. While currently 16 years old, it is noted that she bears a striking resemblance to her mother, Aria, and may physically mature into a taller, curvier frame in the future.

Her standard dungeon attire consists of a white and black battle cloth, black arm covers, and long blue boots. Over this, she wears lightweight silver armor including a breastplate, head guard, and various limb protectors. When not adventuring, she is typically seen in a simple white one-piece dress with gold lining.

Though, in extended media like Memoria Freese, she has several unique outfits, including the Jade Princess backless light green dress with long gloves and a pink hair ribbon, the Galiant Armor red sleeveless top paired with a black skirt and white chestplate, and the Dancing Princess red and white dress accented with a floral headband.

Ais is known for her stoic, often blank-faced expression. In the anime, this is often depicted as almost robotic, whereas the manga and light novels show her having more subtle emotional cues and a "stunted" but present range of feelings.

Personality

Ais Wallenstein is primarily defined by a stoic, reserved exterior that masks deep emotional complexity and trauma. While she is often nicknamed the "Doll Princess" due to her emotionless expression in battle, her personality is far more nuanced in the source material than it often appears in the anime.

Ais is a quiet person who struggles to articulate her feelings. This often makes her appear mysterious or enigmatic to others, but she possesses an unwavering drive to become stronger, largely fueled by a desire for revenge against the One-Eyed Black Dragon. This pursuit can sometimes lead to recklessness in battle.

Despite being a top-tier adventurer, she has a "mentally young" side. She often visualizes a younger version of herself and can be quite oblivious to social norms or perverted advances (particularly from Loki). Beneath her cool exterior, she is a kind person who does not look down on the weak. She has a growing interest in Bell Cranel's growth and frequently helps him, even offering training or the occasional lap pillow. Due in part to her highly competitive nature, she is deeply intrigued by Bell’s rapid progress.

Ais's stoicism is a coping mechanism for significant childhood trauma. Having witnessed the loss of her parents to the One-Eyed Black Dragon at a young age, she suffers from emotional numbness and potentially PTSD. Her skill, Avenger, is powered by her hatred. When using it, she can revert to an aggressive, mechanical state where her judgment is clouded by the need to exterminate monsters.

It is frequently noted by fans that her personality is much more expressive in the Sword Oratoria light novels and manga than in the main anime. The written versions provide her inner monologue, revealing her internal "storm" of emotions that her "doll-like" face doesn't show.

Background

Ais Wallenstein's backstory is one of the central mysteries in DanMachi. While she appears to be a 16-year-old top-tier adventurer, her true origin dates back one thousand years to the age of heroes. Ais is the daughter of two legendary figures from the ancient era: Albert Waldstein, a mortal hero renowned as the strongest swordsman to ever live, and Aria, a Great Spirit who assisted Albert in his quest.

When Ais was roughly seven years old, her parents confronted the One-Eyed Black Dragon (OEBD). Albert was killed during the battle, and Aria was captured or taken by the dragon. For reasons still being revealed, Ais was somehow transported or "frozen" for 1,000 years, eventually appearing in the present-day Dungeon. Roughly nine years before the start of the series (when she was seven in "present" time), Ais was discovered in the Dungeon and taken in by the Loki Familia.

Driven by a deep hatred for monsters and a desire for revenge against the OEBD, she pushed herself to extreme limits, becoming the fastest person to reach Level 2. Her trauma left her emotionally stunted and "sword-like"—focused almost entirely on combat and power until meeting Bell Cranel. She was primarily raised by Riveria Ljos Alf, who acted as a strict but caring mother figure.

Powers and Abilities

Ais is a Level 6 first-class adventurer and a master swordswoman with high-speed, wind-enhanced combat abilities, specializing in slaying monsters, particularly dragons, using her unique magic Ariel and skills like Avenger. She is exceptionally fast and agile, often considered one of the strongest adventurers in Orario. She wields Desperate, a first-class rapier with the Durandal attribute, meaning it is virtually indestructible. This is essential as her Avenger skill would otherwise shatter standard high-grade weapons.

Skills

Skills in DanMachi are unique, inherent abilities that enhance an adventurer's capabilities beyond their basic stats, often reflecting their individual experiences, personality, or even bloodline. They can be active or passive, and are distinct from development abilities, which are more like learned proficiencies that can be gained and improved with use. An adventurer can have up to five skills.

  • Avenger: It massively increases her attack power against monsters and dragon-types based on her hatred. While active, it can inhibit her emotions and damage her own weapons due to the sheer force applied.

Magic

In DanMachi, magic is a powerful ability divided into two main types: congenital magic based on a user's race and innate talent, and acquired magic which is unlocked through a falna given by a god and learned via a grimoire. The "Mind" stat is the source of magical energy, and overuse can lead to a "Mind Down" state. Adventurers can typically learn up to three spells, each often being unique to them.

  • Ariel: An "Enchant" type magic that surrounds her body and weapon with a powerful wind. It acts as both a shield and a massive offensive boost, granting her "pseudo-flight" and incredible striking speed.

Development Abilities

Development Abilities in DanMachi are specialized traits that have a chance of appearing when an adventurer levels up, starting from Level 2. Unlike basic abilities, they offer a significant, specialized boost to a particular area, such as combat with a certain weapon or increased resistance to poisons.

  • Hunter: Increases her abilities against monsters she has fought before.

  • Abnormal Resistance: Provides high resistance to status effects like poison.

  • Swordsman: Enhances her mastery and effectiveness in sword combat.

  • Spirit Healing: Automatically regenerates her "Mind" (mana) at a low rate after using magic, a rare trait theorized to have developed from her frequent use of Ariel.

Goals and Reputation

Ais Wallenstein's primary goal is to defeat the One-Eyed Black Dragon and rescue her mother, Aria, who was taken by the beast. This objective is the core of her character and the sole reason she dedicated herself to becoming a top-class adventurer. Ais also seeks revenge for her father, Albert Waldstein, who was killed by the One-Eyed Black Dragon.

She is driven by a constant, almost irrational need to get stronger to face the dragon. This led her to become the fastest person to reach Level 2 (until Bell Cranel broke her record) and push herself to extreme, often self-destructive limits in the dungeon. Due to her childhood trauma, she developed an intense hatred for monsters, which manifests in her Avenger skill—an ability that massively increases her power based on her hatred.

Mentally, she still views herself as a helpless child waiting for a hero. While she trains to be her own "sword," she has shown a subconscious desire for a hero to save her from her internal darkness. Because her goals are purely based on revenge, she often feels she is unworthy of being a "hero".

Ais's goals intersect with Bell's in several ways. She initially began training Bell to understand the secret behind his rapid growth, hoping it could help her reach the strength needed to defeat the dragon. However, Ais has noted that her internal "black flame" (her hatred and obsession) feels quieter when she is around Bell.

Within the world of DanMachi, Ais is viewed as a living legend among her peers and the general public. She previously held the record for the fastest level-up in history, reaching Level 2 in just one year at the age of eight. Early in her career, she was nicknamed the "Doll Princess" because she fought monsters mechanically with a completely emotionless expression, leading others to view her with a mix of awe, fear, and even scorn.

As a key executive of the Loki Familia, she is recognized as one of the strongest females in Orario, often ranking in the top 10 of the city's adventurer rankings. While she is "lusted after" by many and has rejected over a hundred confessions, most see her as an enigmatic and unapproachable figure due to her lack of social skills.

The fan base's view of Ais is often divided based on which medium they consume. Many anime-only viewers find her character "doll-like" or lacking depth compared to other heroines like Ryuu Lion, while readers of the Sword Oratoria light novels and manga generally have a much higher opinion of her. These works reveal her internal monologue, showing her as a socially awkward "airhead" with deep trauma and a surprisingly youthful mindset.

Regardless of personal preference, the community recognizes her as the primary catalyst for Bell Cranel's growth due to his "Liaris Freese" skill being fueled directly by his desire to stand beside her.
