He is cursed with an insatiable, agonizing craving for human flesh, threatening his remaining sanity and humanity. Kaneki is taken in by Anteiku, a local coffee shop that acts as a safe haven for peaceful ghouls who try to blend into human society without murdering people.

The Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) is a ruthless government agency of human investigators who hunt down and exterminate ghouls using weaponised predatory organs called Quinques. The story breaks down simple "good vs. evil" tropes. Humans are driven to monstrous cruelty out of fear, while many ghouls are just desperate families trying to survive.
